In 1975, George Carlin appeared on a popular TV show, Saturday Night Live, with his
famous words about blue food. “Why is there no blue food? I can’t find blue food—I can’t find the flavor of blue!

Well, Carlin pretty much has it right—there is not no blue food, but there’s certainly not a lot of it.

People don’t seem to prefer blue food.

20% sweeter than they actually are; and green foods as being more sour. Spence suggests: human expectations
may be influenced by our long history of watching—green fruits can become sweet as they grow up and turn red.
But what about blue? Except blueberries, much of the blue food we see these days is dyed blue artificially.
Food producers argue that artificial color doesn’t do much damage to health. A lot of research shows that some
physical problems of kids are related to food dyes—while other studies show no effects at all. Blue birthday cake
or even blue-dyed chicken can be served on the dinner table. So what?

Macao is only forty miles from Hong Kong and it is easy to reach. You can get there by sea. It is an
interesting place and it has a long history. Macao is part of China and most people living there are Chinese.
The first Europeans in Macao came from Portugal. More than four hundred years ago the Portuguese went
there to trade with China. Some settled and made their homes there. They built strong forts（要塞）to guard the city

Dolphins (海豚) live in a dark underwater world. It’s often impossible to see each other or anything else
around them, so sound plays an important role in their survival. To communicate with each other, dolphins
produce all kinds of sounds.
Only other dolphins understand what the sounds mean. Scientists haven’t uncovered their secret
communication, except for one kind of whistle. It might last less than a second, but this whistle is a big deal. Why?
Because these whistles are actually names of dolphins
— and every dolphin has one. Scientists call these sounds a “signature whistle.” When other dolphins hear the
whistle, they know which dolphin is calling.
Dolphins often hunt by themselves but still need to stay connected to the group. Since
they can’t always see each other, dolphins use their signature whistles to check in with other dolphins hundreds of
yards away. “In coastal areas, dolphins exchange whistles even when they’re a third of a mile apart,” says Greg
Campbell, who studies animals. That means dolphins shout out to group members that might be nearly five
football fields away.
What’s amazing is who names the baby dolphin. Not the mother. Not an auntie dolphin or another group
member. Scientists believe the baby dolphin itself comes up with the signature whistle. Like human babies, a baby
dolphin plays with sounds throughout its first year. While testing its sound skills, a baby dolphin is doing
something amazing. It’s creating or figuring out its signature whistle. How or why it chooses its signature whistle
is not clear. Studies show that most of the time the signature whistle is nothing like its
mother’s or group members’ whistles.
When the baby dolphin is about a year old, its signature whistle is set. It repeats it often so the other
dolphins learn to recognize it.
Deciphering(破译) dolphin names is just the beginning of figuring out what dolphins communicate about. Do they
chat about sharks? Discuss the tides? Maybe they even have a name for people. Someday scientists are to decipher
the rest of dolphins’ communication.

Ahead of so-called Singles’ Day on the 11th of this month，2013, online sales have already begun peaking.
The leading e-business platform, tmall.com, has promoted（促销）its fifty-percent-off discount to attract
consumers. They are also trying to attract buyers through social media. Vice President of tmall.com Wang Yulei
says more than 20 thousand online stores have joined the Double 11 Day sales. But this number has doubled. The

During last year's Singles’ Day, tmall.com, together with taobao.com, reached a record of 19.1 billion yuan
in sales, which considered a milestone in the e-business history of China.
Singles’ Day was first started by Chinese college students in the 1990s as the opposite of Valentine’s Day,
a celebration for people without romantic partners. The timing was
based on the date: Nov. 11—or double 11—for singles. Single young people would treat each other to dinner or
give gifts to show love to someone and end their single status.
But now, the Singles’ Day has been promoted as a kind of grand craze just for the shopping season, thanks
to thousands of discounted products being promoted online.
Taobao.com was the first big e-retail platform which used the double 11 idea to promote sales.
Taobao.com reached one million yuan worth of sales on that day in 2009, when they first promoted the Singles’
Day idea. In 2010, the sales increased to 936 million yuan. The figure climbed up to 5.3 billion yuan in 2011,
putting huge demand on shipping services. The figure doubled in 2012.
E-commerce is considered to be replacing the traditional retailing industry, but the reality is both sides are

During last summer holiday, I found part-time job, worked in a toothbrush factory at night. Not until I
experienced it, did I realized that it was no easy job. I went to work when my parents were going to bed. On the
morning, when my parents were going to work, I came to home to sleep. This backward schedule was very tough
for me that I often felt tiring. But I am glad that I had this forgettable experience. Not only was it kind of fun to
