Women don’t talk more than men. Really, they don’t. Women speak 20,000 words a day,
compared to the average man’s 7,000. But a study published recently denies this old rule. Both men
and women use about 16,000 words a day, says the new research in Science magazine.
“It’s been a common belief, but it just didn’t fit,” says James Pennebaker, the researcher of the
seven-year study. Pennebaker and his colleagues analyzed ( 分 析 ) recorded conversations of 396
university students age 18 to 29 in th e USA and Mexico, including 210 women and 186 men. The
study didn’t look at vocabulary or word use, but rather word count.
Pennebaker says two-thirds of participants spoke 11,000 to 25,000 words a day, with the

average for both sexes about 16,000 words. The finding may seem surprising in a popular culture
where women are often thought of as talkative and men as silent.
Most recently, psychiatrist ( 精 神 病 学 家 ) Louann Brizendine used the 20,000 and 7,000
comparison in her 2006 book The Female Brain, as evidence for brain differences. After the book
came out in August, the data was widely reused. “That hits a nerve (神经). It’s been surprising to me
that this little point is the point people pick out,” says Brizendine.
But experts in neurolinguistics( 神经 语言 学) thought that the data was uncertain. Mark
Liberman, a linguistics professor at the University of Pennsylvania, says that after Brizendine’s book
came out, he tried to find evidence to support her claim, but failed.
21. According to the new research in Science magazine, how many words do women use a week?
A. 140,000. B. 47,000. C. 112,000. D. 28, 000.
22. What did Pennebaker and his colleagues focus on in their study?
A. The use of words. B. The structures people used.
C. The speed of speaking words. D. The number of words people used.
23. We can know the comparison used in The Female Brain was .
A. seldom reused by others
B. accepted as a t ruth by most scientists
C. considered untrue by most scientists
D. considered as evidence for sex brain similarities
24. It can be inferred from the passage that at the beginning, Mark Liberman .
A. succeeded in finding the evidence to support Brizendine’s claim
B. didn’t believe Brizendine’s data in her 2006 book The Female Brain
C. thought Brizendine’s data in her 2006 book The Female Brain was true
D. cared little about Brizendine’s claim in her 2006 book The Female Brain

Football, to me, is more than just a game. I have probably learned more valuable lessons from it
than from school.
When I joined the team freshman year, I didn’t realize what I was getting into. Even though I
had been playing since fourth grade and knew it was hard work, nothing would prepare me for the
effort I would put into football that year. We worked all summer in the weight room and ran on the
track to get in physical and mental shape before the season.
See, football is more of a mental sport than anything else, so running on the track wasn’t only
about getting in shape. We would push our minds by running as hard as we could even if we were
going to pass out. At the beginning, I was immature(幼稚) and only thought of myself, sometimes
even gave up when I was tired or hurt. Then after the third game I had a season-ending injury.
Imagine working all summer and then only being able to play three games! I needed surgery on my
arm and at least five months to recover.
Needless to say, I missed the rest of the season, but this actually helped me realize that since
you never know when your last play will be, you should try your hardest in football and life.
After freshman year I decided that I would always give my best effort. Playing varsity(校队的)
football has taught me so much more than just what my assignments are on a particular play or how
to block. I have learned to think about others first, and realized how important working hard is.
Being with all my friends, even sweating and bleeding with them, really made us bond as a group of
hard-working young men who I know will succeed in life.

Parker Liautaud, a teenage student, is preparing for an expedition (探险) to the South Pole. The
19-year-old is now training for a 640-kilometre journey from the Antarctic(南极洲) coast to the
South Pole. If he successfully makes the journey in 22 days as planned, he will break the speed
record for the fastest trip from the continent’s coast to the South Pole on foot. He would also be the
youngest male to reach the goal, although a younger female once did it in the past.
Parker says he was encouraged by the opportunity to raise awareness about climate change,
rather than pushing his own physical limits. Ben Saunders, the British explorer who recently made an
expedition to the South Pole and back, is an inspiring influence in his physical preparation.
Given that background and a training schedule involving two or three hours’ preparation a day,
he might be expected to take a hiatus from his studies at Yale University. However, he is continuing
his course in geology and geophysics, until he heads out to the Antarctic next month. While in
Antarctica, he will be carrying out tests to help show how the climate is changing, including testing a
lightweight weather station for the first time on the continent.
Parker admitted feeling anxious about the journey, which he is carrying out with his partner
Doug Stoup and is expected to complete in less than a month, but he said, “The best way to respond
to pressure is to be as well-prepared as humanly possible.”
