Last night, on my way home I stopped because of being attracted by some
hamburgers at a fast food restaurant. On my way in, a homeless man approached me
and asked, “Do you have any bottles lying around?” I knew he would recycle them
for a few cents, but I didn’t have any, so I said no. And again he asked, “Can
you spare some change (零钱)?” I smiled, and said no again.
He was very respectful; he smiled back and said, “OK, thank you.” Even though
he did not have anything, he was still in good spirits. From the way he spoke I could
tell he was smart.
Then I bought one hamburger and enjoyed my meal, but in the back of my mind
I wondered whether the homeless man was hungry. After I finished my meal I decided
to order another one for him. At this point I didn’t know if he was still around,
but I tried anyway.
At the counter I ordered a hamburger and also a hot chocolate, because it was cold
outside, and I thought it would help warm him up. They delivered me the hot chocolate
first and as I waited for my hamburger, I noticed the homeless man was standing right
beside me. I looked at him and smiled, “This hot chocolate is for you.” He replied
like a gentleman, “Thank you so much. That’s very kind of you. ”
I always believe no matter how hard up (缺钱) I am, there are always those
who are worse off than I. When you help someone, it’s not always about money, it’s
about love. The love you give today, someone might forget tomorrow. It doesn’t matter.
Love anyway, because the greatest thing you can give is love.

People have smoked cigarettes for a long time now. The tobacco which is used
to make cigarettes was first grown in what is now part of the United States.
Christopher Columbus, who discovered America, saw the Indians smoking. Soon the dried
leaves were transported to Europe . In the late 1800s, the Turks made cigarettes
popular.
Cigarette smoke contains at least two harmful substances, tar and nicotine. Tar,
10
which forms as the tobacco burns, damages the lungs and therefore affects breathing.
Nicotine, which is found in the leaves, causes the heart to beat faster and increases
the breathing rate. Nicotine in large can kill a person by stopping a person’s
breathing muscles. Smokers usually take in small amounts that the body can quickly
break down.
Nicotine can make new smokers feel dizzy(头晕) or sick to their stomachs. The
heart rate for young smokers increases 2 to 3 beats per minute. Nicotine also lowers
skin temperature and reduces blood flow in the legs and feet. It plays an important
role in increasing smokers’ risk of heart disease and stroke.
Smoking cigarettes is dangerous. Cigarette smoking was the cause of lung cancer
and several other deadly diseases.
63. Tobacco first appeared in_________.

It’s not easy being a teenager, nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager.
You can make your child feel angry, hurt, or misunderstood by what you say without
realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow
while gently letting him know that you’ll still be there for him when he needs you.
Expect a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety
problems, such as drug use or careless driving; consider everything else open to
discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don’t insist(坚持)
he tell you what’s on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he’ll clam
up.Instead, let him attempt(尝试) to solve things by himself. At the same time,
remind him that you’re always there for him if he needs advice or help. Show respect
for your teenager’s privacy . Never read his mail or listen in on personal
conversations.
Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child
talks on the family’s telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for15minutes,
but then he must stay off the phone for at least an equal period of time. This not
only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but
also teaches your teenager moderation(节制). Or if you are open to the idea, allow
your teenager his own phone that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part-time
job.
67.The main purpose of the text is to tell parents ______ .
A. how to get along with a teenager
B. how to respect a teenager
C. how to understand a teenager
D. how to help a teenager grow up
68. What does the phrase “clam up” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? ______
A. become excited B. show respect
C. refuse to talk D. seek help
12
69.The last paragraph is about how to teach a teenager ______ .
A. to use the phone in a sensible way
B. to pay for his own telephone
C. to share the phone quickly
D. to answer the phone quickly
70.What should parents do in raising a teenager according to the text? ______
A. Not allow him to learn driving or take drugs.
B. Give him advice only when necessary.
C. Let him have his own telephone.
D. Not talk about personal things with him.
