When you’re on the go, your best friend and resource can be your phone. In
the age of smart phones, apps are like guiding stars. They can point you in the
right direction for a hotel, list expenses, send postcards, and much more. When
used together, these apps can be the basic travel tool, placing a wealth of
information at your fingertips no matter where you are on the planet. U.S.
News Travel has picked the essential travel apps, known for their utility (效用)
and reliability. Best of all, they cost absolutely nothing.
Trip It
Your Personal Travel Agent
Be your own travel agent and plan every detail of your trip—from car rental to

Weather Free
Your Go-To Meteorologist
Stop trying to explain the weather forecast on the evening news (particularly
when it's in a foreign language). The Weather Free app informs you (in English)
of the climate in various locations. It features the local weather, and other key
factors that will inform your decision about what to wear before stepping
outside.
Goby
Your Event Guru
When you're in a foreign city, you sometimes look around and ask: Where are
all the people? Goby has the answer. This app pinpoints the neighborhood hot
spots (including museums, hotels, eateries, and more) in your neighborhood.
But its true value comes in finding nearby events. You'll discover concerts,
plays, and more right around the corner.

Some children are natural-born bosses. They have a strong need to make
decisions, manage their environment, and lead rather than follow. Stephen
Jackson, a Year One student, “operates under the theory of what’s mine
is mine and what’s yours is mine,” says his mother. “The other day I
bought two new Star Wars light sabers(剑). Later, I saw Stephen with the
two new ones while his brother was using the beat-up ones.”
“Examine the extended family, and you’ll probably find a bossy
grandparent, aunt, uncle or cousin in every generation. It’s an
inheritable trait,” says Russell Barkley, a professor at the Medical
University of South Carolina. Other children who may not be particularly
bossy can gradually gain dominance(支配地位)when they sense their parents
are weak, hesitant, or in disagreement with each other.
Whether it’s inborn nature or developed character at work, too much
control in the hands of the young isn’t healthy for children or the family.
Fear is at the root of a lot of bossy behavior, says family psychologist
John Taylor. Children, he says in his book From Defiance to Cooperation,
“have secret feelings of weakness” and “a desire to feel safe.” It’s
the parents’ role to provide that protection.
When a “boss child” doesn’t learn limits at home, the stage is set
for a host of troubles outside the family. The overly willful and unbending
child may have trouble obeying teachers or coaches, for example, or
trouble keeping friends. It can be pretty lonely as the top dog if no one
likes your bossy ways.
“I see more and more parents giving up their power,” says Barkley,
who has studied bossy behavior for more than 30 years. “They bend too
far because they don’t want to be as strict as their own parents were.
But they also feel less confident about their parenting skills. Their kids,
in turn, feel more anxious.”
4. Bossy children like Stephen Jackson .
A. make good decisions B. show self-centeredness
C. lack care from others D. have little sense of fear
5. The study on bossy behavior implies that parents .
A. should give more power to their children
B. should be strict with their children
C. should not be so anxious about their children
D. should not set limits for their children
6. Bossy children may probably become .
A. relaxed B. skillful C. hesitant D. lonely
7. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How bossy behavior can be controlled.
B. How we can get along with bossy children.
C. What leads to children’s bossy behavior.
D. What effect bossy behavior brings about.

One day, when I was working as a psychologist in England, an adolescent boy
showed up in my office. It was David. He kept walking up and down restlessly, his
face pale, and his hands shaking slightly. His head teacher had referred him to me.
“This boy has lost his family," he wrote. “He is understandably very sad and refuses
to talk to others, and I’m very worried about him. Can you help?”
I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him?
There are problems psychology doesn’t have the answer to, and which no words can
describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically.
The first two times we met, David didn’t say a word. He sat there, only
looking up to look at the children’s drawings on the wall behind me. l suggested we
play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every
Wednesday afternoon——in complete silence and without looking at me. It’s not easy
to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twice.
Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from
the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed
as if he enjoyed my company. But why did he never look at me?
“Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with,” I thought.
“Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering.” Some months later, when we were
playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly.
"It’s your turn," he said.
After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and joined a
bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times, about his biking with some friends, and
about his plan to get into university. Now he had really started to live his own life.
Maybe I gave David something. But I also learned that one— without any
words—can reach out to another person. All it takes is a hug, a shoulder to cry on, a
friendly touch, and an ear that listens.
8.When he first met the author, David___________.
A.felt a little excited.
B.walked energetically.
C.looked a little nervous.
D.showed up with his teacher.
9.As a psychologist, the author_________.
A.was ready to listen to David.
B.was skeptical about psychology.
C.was able to describe David’s problem.
D.was sure of handling David’s problem.
10.David enjoyed being with the author because he__________.
A.wanted to ask the author for advice.
B.needed to share sorrow with the author.
C.liked the children's drawings in the office.
D.beat the author many times in the chess game.
11.What can be inferred about David?
A.He recovered after months of treatment.
B.He liked biking before he lost his family.
C.He went into university soon after starting to talk.
D.He got friends in school before he met the author.

Two studies show that fatness and alcohol(酒精) act together to increase the
risk of illness in both men and women.
In the first study, researchers examined the connection between body mass
index (BMI) and liver cirrhosis(肝硬化) in 1.2 million middle-aged women. Each
woman was followed for 6.2 years.
Compared to the women of a healthy w eight, the women who were overweight
had an increased risk of liver cirrhosis. And through the study we can see that alcohol
is dangerous for people’s health.
For example, among the women who were reported drinking about a third to half
a drink a day,0.8 in 1,000 would go to the hospital with liver cirrhosis or would die
from liver cirrhosis over five years if they were of healthy weight compared with 1 in
1,000 women who were overweight. However, among the women who were reported
drinking two and a half drinks a day ,2.7 in 1,000 would go to the hospital with liver
cirrhosis or would succumb to liver cirrhosis over five years if they were of healthy
weight compared with 5 in 1,000 women who were overweight.
In the second study, researchers surveyed the influence of BMI and drinking
on the body in more than 9,000 men. They were followed for 29 years.
Both BMI and drinking were connected with liver disease and, more
importantly, if they worked together, the influence was greater than that of BMI or
drinking alone. For example, overweight men who were reported drinking 15 or more
units per week had the greatest risk of liver disease.
Both studies show that, from a public health view, methods to reduce both
excessive (过度的) drinking and excessive body weight should reduce the chance of
liver disease.
12.What did the researchers mainly focus on in the first study?
A.The connection between fatness and drinking.
B.The influence of BMI and drinking on the body.
C.The connection between BMI and liver cirrhosis.
D.The reason why women are easy to get overweight.
13.The underlined phrase “succumb to” in Paragraph 4 most probably means .
A.stand for
B.die of
C.get over
D.change into
14.It can be inferred from the passage that .
A.improving body mass index is very difficult.
B.the two studies arrived at different conclusions.
C.it took researchers a long time to do the two studies.
D.drinking alcohol leads to fatness in both men and women.
15.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A.The Influence of Excessive Drinking on Our Health.
B.The Connection Between Fatness and Liver Cirrhosis.
C.The Normal Amount of Drinking Each Day for Adults.
D.The Increase in the Risk of Illness Caused by Fatness and Alcohol.

Say No to Copying Homework
Nowadays, copying others’ homework is quite common in some schools. There
two main reasons for this.
Firstly, some students spend too much time playing so that they have no
time for homework. Another reason is that some don’t listen to their teachers
attentively in the class so they cannot do their homework by themselves. In
order to hand them in, they have no choice but to copy.
As we all know, homework plays an important role in our studies. It is used
to check our study and help us review our lessons. If we hand in the homework
copied form others, our teachers will not know what we haven’t understood.
So it is time that we said no to copying homework. Only by doing homework
on our own can we really make progress in our studies.
