The roast is very famous in Brazil. Customers just sit, waiting for waiters to send them all
kinds of meat. If you like, you take one; if you don’t, the waiters go to another guest.
One day when I was in Brazil, I went to a restaurant to try the roast. After I took my seat, a
waiter gave me a sign with the color “red” on one side and “green” on the other. I put it down on
the table, and then the waiters began to serve me. My plate was already full, but the waiters still
kept on serving me more. I had to eat more quickly. But to my surprise, the waiters still kept on
serving me more. I thought I couldn’t eat any more.
When I was wondering why they kept serving me, a man beside me looked at me and
smiled. Of course, he told me the reason. He helped me turn the sign over, with red outside. When
I finished the rest food, I found the waiters didn’t serve me and just went to others. If I didn’t call
them, they wouldn’t take a look at me.
Do you know why? It’s just like the traffic lights in the street. If you don’t give the
message of stopping serving, the waiters will go on. How interesting!

Snake dishes have become popular in recent years. Snake meat is often seen in
restaurants. It seems that eating snakes is now in fashion, and if you haven’t eaten any snakes yet,
you’re considered out-of-date. But I wonder whether it is worth following.
Some people think that eating snake meat is good for their health. But these people don’t
know that snakes usually eat mice and worms. Therefore, there are many parasites(寄生虫) found
inside snakes’ bodies. They may be bad for our health. Apart from this, we’re sorry to see that
more snakes are being killed by a butcher’s knife. According to the newspaper, Shanghai Star,
about 1,000 tons of snakes are eaten by people every year in China. In Shenzhen of Guangdong
Province, sometimes as many as 10 tons of snakes are served on dinner tables in a single day. If
we still turn a blind eye to this, a vicious circle(恶性循环) will be created — if more snakes are
eaten by people, the number of snakes will drop, and the number of mice will increase, which will
result in a decrease in crop output. This will make more people hungry. Who wants to see such a
tragedy?
Therefore, let’s not eat snakes any more! To protect the snakes is to protect ourselves.

B. Because snake skin can be used to make many beautiful shoes, bags and clothes.
C. Because eating snakes is now in fashion.
D. Because a drop in the number of snakes will result in a decrease in crop output.

For several years, Americans have enjoyed teleshopping — watching TV and buying
things by phone. Now teleshopping is popular in Europe. In a number of European countries,
people can turn on their TVs and shop for clothes, jewelry, food, toys and many other things.
Teleshopping is becoming popular in Sweden, for example. One of the biggest Swedish
companies sells different kinds of things on TV in 15 European countries, and in one year it made
$100 million. In France, there are two teleshopping channels, and the French spend about $20
million a year to buy things through the channels.
Some people like teleshopping because it allows them to do their shopping without leaving
their homes. But at the same time, other Europeans do not like this new way of shopping. They
call teleshopping “junk(废旧物品) on the air” because many Europeans usually worry about the
quality(质量) of the things for sale on TV. Good quality is the most important to them, and they
can’t be sure about the quality of the things on TV.
The need for high quality means that European teleshopping companies will have to be
different from the American companies. They have to be more careful about the quality of the
things they sell.

C. they think the things sold on TV are too expensive
D. they think the things sold on TV are not always of good quality
( )15. The teleshopping companies in Europe should pay more attention to ____________.

Once upon a time, there were two thieves who wanted to steal some sheep which were
fed by a farmer. They had watched the sheep for a long time. And they knew that there were
twenty-eighth sheep in the farmer’s yard.(1)
In a deep night, they came to the outside of the farmer’s yard and got ready to steal all
the sheep. But they found that the gate was ________ (lock) inside, and they couldn’t open it.
Finally, they came up with a good idea. They dug a big hole in the wall so that one of the thieves
was able to go into the yard and pass the sheep out one by one to the other. In order to prevent the
sheep from running away, the thief outside must cut off its head quickly with a sharp knife while
the thief inside was passing a sheep out of the hole.
They started to work like that and the work was going well. “One, two, three ...,” they
both counted the numbers silently, “... twenty-six, twenty-seven ...” However, the thief inside
stopped ________ (count). “Where is the twenty-eighth sheep?” he thought. “ Did I make a
mistake?” So he stretched(伸) his head out of the hole to ask the other thief. However, the thief
outside thought it must be the twenty-eighth sheep’s head. He didn’t think about something and
cut off the head at once. (2)

sent to the vet by the owner before they came that night.
