Does money make people happier? Studies show that it does-when people at the poverty
level are suddenly paid more. Other studies also show that people who lose the money
they are used to having bee very unhappy. But the most important thing seems to be
that people are happiest when they make more than other people. Perhaps one secret
of happiness is just to think about people who don’t have as much money as you.
Sadly, however, the opposite is also true. When you pare yourself to friends and
neighbors who have higher ines, this may make you unhappy.
Poor people need enough food to feed themselves but what happens when people
suddenly bee prosperous (富有的)? This is the case in China right now where people
have bee much better off, but can only have one child. The result is an army of
“little emperors”: fat, spoiled children. A child measures happiness in love, not
food, and there’s nothing good about overfeeding a child.
Richard Layard, director of the London School of Economics, says, “The six key
factors now scientifically established to affect happiness most are: mental health,
satisfying and secure work, a secure and loving private life, a safe munity (社
区), freedom, and moral values (道德观).” It is quite interesting that only one
of these has to do with making money. People who realize this think that it is better
to be paid in something other than money, for example, time.
Many people are now starting to take time off in different ways. Rather than saving
up their vacations for a rushed trip once a year, people are taking a day or so here
and there to have smaller, quieter vacations. In some cases, people are going in
the other direction and taking vacations of several months or even a year. On these
vacations, they don’t generally just lie on a beach. Instead, they might volunteer
in another country or learn a new skill like a foreign language.

The human brain weighs about 1.4 kilograms, but it can hold much more information
than most puters. However, there is another difference between humans and puters.
puters don't forget information they are given, but humans often do. No one remembers
everything, and luckily we don't usually have to. But everyone can improve their

they bee easier to remember. For example, before you go to sleep, it’s a good idea
to review the new things you learned that clay.
◆Discuss with a friend. It is always easier to remember things through discussions.
You can have a discussion about what's right and what's wrong, and it will lead to
the right answer.
◆Never tell yourself that you have a bad memory. You can always do something to

When I was 12, my family lived in the countryside.
There was a big tree behind my house. Every evening
some mockingbirds (嘲鸫) would e and rest in it and
sing. That was the most beautiful sound that I had ever
heard.
I decided that I would catch a baby mockingbird and
keep it in a cage(笼子). That way I would have my own songbird.
I finally caught one and put it in a cage. At first, the baby bird was scared
and tried to get out of the cage, but finally it became quiet in its new home. I
felt very pleased with myself and looked forward to hearing beautiful songs from
my own songbird.
I left the cage out in our backyard. On the second day my new pet’s mother flew
to the cage with food in its mouth. The baby bird ate everything its mother brought
to it. I was pleased to see this. Certainly the mother knew better than I how to
feed its baby.
The following morning when I went to see what my pet was doing, I discovered it
on the floor of the cage, dead. I was shocked! What had happened? I had taken good
care of my little bird.
Later, A friend of my father told me, “ when a mother mockingbird finds its baby
in a cage, it will bring the baby poisonous(有毒的) food. It thinks it’s better
for its child to die than to live in the cage.”
Since then I have never caught another bird.

A gift card is a card that is issued(发行) by a store.
These cards are big money makers for stores. One reason
is that when gift-card holders go to the store, they
often see other things to buy, and they spend more money
than the gift card is worth. Unused cards are another
reason. Stores make millions of dollars because large
numbers of people never use their cards. They either lose them, forget about them,
or decide that it’s not worth the effort.
Gift card are being very popular in many countries around the world. In the
US, they are one of the most popular kinds of gifts. Why? People love the
convenience--- gift cards are easy to buy and easy to use, either in the store or
online. The recipient can choose his or her own gift and the giver does not have
to worry about finding just the right thing.
Receiving a gift card, however, is not the same as receiving a gift. A real
gift is a better reminder of the person who gave it. The message of a real gift is
more likely to be, “I spend some time trying to find the right gift for you because
I care about you.” Often a gift card does not send the same message as a real gift.
It may seem to say, “I was in a hurry. I didn’t have time to think about what you
would really like.”
In today’s world, gift cards are certainly convenient. However, they can make
us forget the real purpose of giving gifts, which is to build a closer connection
between the gift-giver and the gift-recipient.
( )6. How many reasons are given to explain why gift cards are big money makers
for stores ?
A.One B.Two C.Three D.Four

A. Why gift cards are popular in the US. B. Different kinds of gift cards.
C. Where to buy gift cards. D. How to use gift cards.

A. I care about you. B. I know you like the gift cards.
C. I couldn’t find the right gift for you. D. I didn’t have time to buy
you a real gift.
( )10. Which of the following is the writer’s opinion?
A. It’s easy for people to lose gift cards. B. Gift cards are better than
real gifts.
C. Gift cards help people save money. D. Real gifts can bring people closer.

As we all know, the situation of school violence(校园暴力) most appears in
high school, because the students are in the age of rebellious phase(叛逆期). But
recently, the school violence situation is increasing rapidly with a trend of small
age among primary and secondary school students. The reason why students bee more
aggressive than before, I think both parents and school are lay responsibility at
this.
In the first place, some parents spoiled their child so much that they won’t
let other child to hurt their baby a little bit. And they always teach their child
to strive for what they want, but they usually didn’t tell them the exactly right
way to achieve their goal. As a result, child chooses the most direct way to get
what they want, like use violence. This is a consequence (结果)that kids doing
something without their parent are the right guidance.
In the second place, most schools focus on the teaching quality too much; hence,
they ignore(忽略,无视) the mental(心理) growth of the students. pare to the
student achievement, the bully case(欺凌事件) really doesn't seem so important,
as long as it is not so serious. As a matter of fact, the abuser(施暴者) will bee
more violent if no one stops them, at the same time, the victim(受害者) will bee
weaker or they might also bee an abuser to bully the one who are weaker than them.
People think that parents should be there to educate their children strictly
and teach them to respect others and be friendly to others. Spoiling children is
killing the children slowly. But in China,it doesn’t seem that school has the best
way to deal with the school violence, teachers only educate the abusers
by persuasion and education. Some laws like The Law of the Protection of
Juveniles and pulsory Education Law make the society and the school have few ways
to punish the abusers and they bee more violent. We agree to protect the
juveniles ,but to those abusers who make the school violence, People strongly appeal
(呼吁) our government should make the strict laws to stop school violence .

B. School pay more attention to the mental growth of the students
C. Our government should make more strict laws
D. All above
( )14.What should you do if you are bullied by problem students?
A. Don’t be scared, protect yourself and tell teachers or parents at once or call
the police
B. Bee an abuser to bully others
C. Keep it to yourself

Jiang Yixing, 14, from Nanjing, supports the parents’ opinion. He uses a dumbphone

Have you noticed your life being a little easier? Now, when you go to a certain
shopping mall, you can enjoy its free Wi-Fi there. When you want to take a taxi,
you can book one with your phone. In fact, all these can be seen as the basic parts
of a smart city.

and leakage(泄漏)and send data to let the house owner know. The same system is
used for other city resources like electricity and natural gas. This way, people
know how they use their resources and are glad to help reduce waste.
Santander in Spain also gives us a look at the future. If people point a phone toward
a nearby bus stop, the phone immediately shows all bus lines that serve the stop
as well as their arrival times. The government organized a research team and provided

What should you do if you see a group of people fighting? What if a robber
(强盗)breaks into your home? The correct thing to do is to dial 110--- China’
s emergency telephone number.
In China, the number 110 originates from a special day-Jan 10. Can you see why this
day was chosen? The data of Jan 10(1.10)spells out the number itself. Established
in 1986, 110’s emergency service is mostly for the police. 110 has helped people
a lot
During 2011, 110 emergency centers answered over 135 million phone calls.
According to the Ministry of Public Security. With the help of 110, police have solved
1.22 million criminal cases(刑事案件).
When faced with danger, most people know that they should call 110. But few of
them, may know how to make a 110 call. “110” is a free call that people can make
either by fixed telephone or mobile phone. There is no need to add a city code before
110 when calling with mobile phone.
The most important thing when calling 110 is to keep calm. You need to say your
name, location, your phone number and describe the situation as clearly as possible.
If you are too nervous to say anything, just follow the telephone operator’s
instructions.
If the phone is busy, don’t hang up. You should hold on until the operator answers
it. As well as China, almost every country has its own emergency number. In the US,
911 links callers to emergency services including police, fire and ambulance(救
护车). The system is able to provide the physical location of mobile phones, which
makes it quicker to get to the scene. In the UK, people call 911 when they are in
an emergency. Call centers can rely on interpretation(口译) services covering 170
languages
Next are some figures about the figure 110:
● “110” is a 24-hour emergency number.
● On average, every telephone operator answers 800 to1,000 emergency calls every
day.
● Operators should deal with an emergency call in 57 seconds.
● Police set off no more than one minute after receiving information from telephone
operators. In cities, police are required to get to the scene in five minutes. In
suburb, it is ten minutes.
● In China, 95 percent of cities and towns have 110 emergency centers.
● There are more than 24,000 telephone operators around the country.

Four years ago when I was a boy of 11, I got into the biggest trouble as a kid. It
was a Saturday morning. Both my parents were out, leaving me and my 10—month—old
sister became alone. Anyway, my sister was still asleep in her room. In fact I had
the house to myself. I decided to do some drawing. Soon I gave up. Nothing was on
TV, so I felt bored and touched the candles on the shelp…I had an idea! What would
happen if I see fire to some kitchen paper Well, of course it went on fire, but it
wasn’t the tiny flame(火箭)I’d expected, and I couldn’t blow it out. I threw it
on the floor, and then luckily got my dad’s boots(靴子)and stamped it out.
I thought I was safe until there was a HCGE hole in my room. When my mum came
home later, she smelt the smoke immediately. She dropped the shopping bag, luckily
for me, over the hole. I thought this meant she would never see it. However, after

hole was still there, reminding me of what I did.

My grandfather took me to the small lake on the farm when I was seven. He told
me to throw a stone into the water. And he told me to watch the circle created by
the stone. Then he asked me to think of myself as that stone.
“You may make lots of splashes in your life, but the waves that e from those
splashes will disturb the peace of all the people around you” he said.
“Remember that you are responsible for what you put in your circle and that the
circle will also disturb many other circles. You will need to live in the way that
allows the good that es from your circle to send the peace of that goodness to others.
The splash that es from anger or jealousy will send those feelings to other circles.
You are responsible for both.”
That was the first time I realized each person creates the inner peace or discord
(冲突) that goes out into the world. We cannot create world peace if we are puzzled
with inner disagreement, hate, doubt, or anger. We gave out the feelings and thoughts

circles of life.

As I walked through Beijing's Houhai neighborhood, something green caught my eye.
Sprouts(豆芽), mushrooms and flowers all came out on people's heads, standing
straight up. I was so surprised at the craziness that a lot of people have plants
e out on their heads.
The trend(潮流) was a great chance for business. Merchants(小贩) stood on street
ers' selling all kinds of plastic(塑料的) mushrooms and sprouts. Three yuan for one
sprout, five for a pair. Customers put what they bought onto their heads and walked
off, and the sprouts danced happily on people's head. China Daily also reported that
one Taobao merchant sold 28,850 hairpins(发夹) in a month.
The strange trend had been popular for 2 months in China. I wanted to find out
what was behind the strange hairpins. I went to the 798 Art District to do some
research, There were tons of tourists with sprouts on heads, and a shopkeeper told
me that the film Monster Hunt was the cause of the popularity. The xx Chinese movie
featured a cute little monster with a patch of moss(苔藓)on the top of his head.
CNN reported in a different way: The idea of the hairpins came from a Japanese
cartoon character. One smiling face has a pair of green leaves growing on its head.
The trend was catching great attention from all over the world. Major newspapers
like The Wall Street Journal and The Telegraph showed their confusion over the
strange trend and they said they really couldn't understand why Chinese people were
so crazy.
Some people think perhaps the hairpins are a symbol of the cute and childlike "meng"
culture. Others believe they are the symbol of the love for cartoons. I think maybe
this is showing their strong wishes to protect the environment.
Who knows? In fact, nobody cares about it. After all, beauty is mysterious(神

ANIMATED(动画) movies always have a message about morals (寓
意), whether it is getting over fears or learning to be yourself.
Zootopia (《疯狂动物城》), a Disney 3D animation film, takes on
the issues of stereotypes (成见).
In the film, we meet Judy Hoops, a countryside bunny who bees
the first rabbit police officer. She works in Zootopia, a big
city full of large and small animals.
During her first day on the job, Judy meets Nick Wilde, a con
artist (骗子) fox. Nick laughs at her work. A large fox was mean to Judy when she
was young. Her father also told her not to trust foxes. So she dislikes Nick. However,
when Judy follows up on a case (案件) where 14 animals go missing, she finds that
Nick is very smart. As the two work together, Nick slowly bees Judy’s friend and
adviser.
But this is not the only stereotype Judy has to break. Her boss, Police Chief Bogo,
a big water buffalo (水牛), doesn’t trust her. In Bogo’s mind, rabbits are silly
and cannot do serious work. So he gives Judy the work of parking duty.
Judy knows she has to achieve something big to rise above the stereotype. That’s
why the case of the missing animals is so important. It’s a chance to prove (证
明) herself. However, she only has 2 days to solve it.
Since it came out on March 4, Zootopia has won big box office numbers and praise

Saying no starts small
“All right then — just one more piece...” Words every girl has said when they
are faced with the delicious cheesecake. Of course, many of us know we may eat the
whole thing in the end.
It isn’t just girls. Most of us find it hard to say “no” to something attractive.
However, scientists now say that willpower(意志力)is very important to success
and a happy life.
Scientists in different countries have been studying the effects of willpower on
people’s lives for a long time. The results are similar, according to an article
on February 7 in the Guardian, a famous British newspaper.
In one experiment(实验), scientists told young children that they could either
have a marshmallow (圆形软糖) now, or two marshmallows in 15 minutes. Waiting
obviously(明显地) needed more willpower. Scientists then continued studying the
children as they grew up. They wanted to see if some children always had stronger
willpower. They also wanted to see how having stronger willpower affected (影响)
their lives.
Years later, scientists found that the children who had waited for two marshmallows
were all healthier, happier and richer adults. Oppositely, the children who had shown
weaker willpower at that young age were more likely to be in low-paid jobs, to be
overweight, to have social problems.
But there is hope, Roy F Baumeister, an American social psychology(心理学)
professor told the Guardian. Baumeister says we can train our willpower just like
we train our muscles(肌肉). Even a little practice can strengthen(加强)our overall
(全部的) self-control if we do it regularly(规律地).
You could start by making yourself stand up straight, speaking in plete sentences,
or using a puter mouse with the other hand. Scientists have found that people who
manage to change little habits often perform much better in laboratory willpower
tests.
Like muscles, willpower can “get tired”. Don’t try to do too many things at
the same time, or when you don’t have enough energy, for example when you are ill.
If you already feel tired, you can try to recharge(恢复) your willpower with a good
night’s sleep and by eating well.
( ) 11. The example of a girl eating cheesecake is used to_______________

A. 有攻击力的 B. 有吸引力的 C. 有执行力的 D. 有影响力的
( ) 13. What can we infer from the experiment___________________________
A. The scientists had already known the results before the experiment.
B. It showed that willpower is the most important to success and a happy life.
C. The children who chose to wait were more likely to be successful in their lives.
D. The children who chose only one marshmallow at first had stronger willpower.
( ) 14. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about the training of willpower?

Have you ever done something foolish that made you feel so embarrassed that you
wished you could just disappear? Well, that’s exactly how I felt, one cold Saturday
morning last autumn.
I had gone to town to do some shopping, and as I was walking through the
park on my way home from the shop, it suddenly began to rain. I ran into a
nearby phone box as quickly as I could because I didn’t have an umbrella.
It was raining heavily, so I decided to stay in the phone box until it stopped.
A few moments later, I saw a young man walk up to the phone box, wearing
a yellow raincoat and holding a tool box. I didn’t want to go out into the
rain. So I picked up the phone and pretended that I was talking to someone.
I supposed the man would go away, but he didn’t. He just waited patiently
in the rain, watching me wave my hands about and act as if I was deep in conversation.
Luckily, the rain began to stop after about ten minutes. “OK, Mum,” I said
loudly to the phone. “I’ll see you later. Bye!” I put the phone down, picked up
my shopping bag and walked out of the phone box. “I’m sorry I took so long,” I
said to the man.
“Oh, I don’t want to use the phone,” he replied with a smile. “I’ve just
e to repair it. It’s out of order, you see.” I felt myself go bright red in the
face and I hurried away with my head down. That was certainly one of the most

Yesterday I went to watch 3D IMAX 'Avatar' with my mother and the teachers in
her school. I have to say that the film is such a wonder that I thought it is well
worth(值得) watching in one's whole life. 'Avatar' is not just a film. Yes, the view
in it is really beautiful, charming, amazing, wonderful...I can use hundreds of words
to describe what I saw. The film is not just about the love story between a 'human'
and a Na'vi princess, but also an educational file.
The film has something in mon with the USA history. The Na'vi people live on
the planet called Pandora, seems like the Indian people who used to live on the
America continent(州). They first weled the new guys who came to settled (定居)
on the new land. They gave them food, provide them with warm clothing, and taught
them the living skills, including how to hunt, to build house... But soon everything
changed. The settlers became robbers. They robbed many things of the Indians, and
treated them very bad, even began to drive them out of their living places. The
Indians became homeless. What a shame! The new settlers treated their benefactor
(恩人) in such a rude way. How coldblood they were!
In this film, the charactors were just changed. The Americans are changed into
human beings, and the local Indians turn into the Na'vi people on the Pandora. They
begin to rob again. They, or should I say 'we' are miserly(自私的,贪婪的). We have
already destroyed too much on the earth. The water has been wasted, the air has been
polluted, the forest has been cut, millions of animals have been killed and we can
never see them again. It is just so sad! I just cannot stand it. We must live in
harmony (和谐) with the nature.
On the U.N. Climate Change Meeting, which was held in Copenhagen , Denmark,
our Chinese govenment published our aim, reducing the Carbon Dioxide(二氧化碳).
The USA government did not promise anything, they just focus on their own industry
development. Do they really want to act like what the film has shown? I can't
understand why did they do this.
In the film, I saw a situation, the army leader told the soldior that the Na'vi
people believe that the Eywa would bless them, everybody laughed at it. Because they
don't have anything to believe in. Or can I say they just believe in themselves.
It is so sad! People hang together because they have the same belief. But the soldiors
in this film, have pleted been coldblood killer. What did they fight for? For
resources? ...
My men it's time to wake up! It's time for us to hang together just like brothers
and sisters, to fight for our living areas. e on!
