Yours, Li Hua (二) When I was in the sixth grade, I began noticing how other kids were separating into groups. I wasn’t sure where I belonged. I found it hard to fit it. On a Monday morning, our teacher assigned“a secret friend”for the coming week. She wrote each Kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a jar; then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left bubble gum, pens and even money. It seems that everyone was getting cool presents from their friends except me. On the last morning of our assignment, when I walked into my classroom, something on my desk caught my eye. As I came closer, I found there sat a can of perfumed powder. “ Oh, my God, it's an old lady gift that I had received!” I thought to myself. What’s worse, the powder had already been opened. I felt my face turn red as I put it into my desk. I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls who had seen me open the power started talking trash about my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in.“How terrible,”I heard myself saying angrily, “What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift ? My grandmother wouldn’t even want it.” The girls laughed at my remarks and filed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn’t normally like me to say mean things like that about someone. 注意: 1. 所续写短文的词数应为 150 左右; 2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好; Paragraph 1: Suddenly my classmate Jenny rushed up to me,_______________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________ Paragraph 2: Along with my apologies, I told her the fact. (三) Whether we notice it or not, our child is a little reflection of ourselves. They grow up looking more and more like us. They even have similar personalities and hobbies. And in some cases, the standard of choosing a good friend. One day, my 10-year-old Jane said, “Mom, I made a new friend at school today. Can she come over tomorrow?” Her words made me extremely happy because Jane was a shy girl and I wanted her to make some friends to bring her out of her shell. “Sure, honey, that sounds great.” I said, thinking back to my own childhood best friend, Susan. We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights, New York. We met at the age of 10, too. Like my daughter, I was shy and had trouble making friends. But Susan drew me out. She was one of the friendliest people in school, with shiny black hair and a mile-wide smile. Thanks to Susan, I was happy every day. In senior high school, Susan went on a trip to Florida. This was the first time we had to be away from each other for a few days. “I’ll be back soon and I will write to you as soon as I arrive.” She told me. But I didn’t get her phone call nor receive any mail from her. Soon, my family moved to New Jersey, making my hope of seeing Susan impossible. Whenever I thought of her, tears came into my eyes. The next day Jane brought her new friend home. “Hi, Mrs. Smith,” the little girl said. Her hair was so shiny and black and she gave me a big smile. “My name is Jo. My mom will pick me up two hours later.” 注意: 1.续写词数应为 150 左右 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph1:I was puzzled because my daughter’s new friend looked so familiar. ____________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Two hours passed really quickly, and there was a knock on the door.___________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ (四) When a tornado touched down in a small town nearby, many families were left completely ruined. One Sunday,a particular picture especially touched me. A young woman stood in front of an entirely ruined home. A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downcast. Clutching(紧握) at her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, eyes wide with confusion and fear. The article that went with the picture gave the clothing sizes of each family member. With growing interest, I noticed that their sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my children to help those less fortunate than themselves. I taped the picture of the young family to our refrigerator, explaining their difficulty to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and to three-year-old Meghan. “These poor people now have nothing,” I said. “We’ll share what we have with them.” I brought three large boxes and placed them on the living room floor, encouraging the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and foods that they no longer needed. Meghan walked up with Lucy, her much-loved doll, hugged tightly to her chest. She stopped in front of the box, gave her doll a final kiss, then laid her gently on top of the other toys. “Oh, Honey,” I said. “You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much.” Meghan nodded seriously, “Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she’ll make that other little girl happy, too.” Para. 1: The boys had watched, openmouthed, when their sister placed her favorite doll in the box._____________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Para. 2: I looked at my children for a long moment.__________________________ _________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________ (五) When Ruth was sixty-eight years old, she visited her daughter Judy and teenage granddaughter Marcy in California. They headed for their cabin, moving forty miles up and down the mountains in their car, along a narrow one-lane road that wound terrifyingly close to cliffs (悬崖). After dinner, Marcy announced the water tank was low and that she would drive the car down to the pump and get water. Ruth was nervous about her young granddaughter driving down the narrow road by herself, but Judy reminded her that Marcy had been driving vehicles up there roads for many years “Just be careful, Marcy”, her mother warned. “They’ve had a drought up here and the road along the cliff is pretty shaky. Be sure to hug the mountain side.” Ruth and Judy watched Marcy from the big window where they could see the road winding down the mountainside. Fifteen minutes later, Judy was still watching when suddenly she screamed,”Oh no! She went over the cliff, Momma! The car and Marcy--they went over! We have to help her!Come on!” Judy took off running desperately. Grabbing a three-foot-long walking stick against the cabin door, Ruth ran behind her, but Judy was quickly out of sight after the first turn in the road. Breathing hard, Ruth ran on and on, trying to catch up with her daughter. It was getting harder and harder to see anything at dusk. Suddenly she stopped, not knowing where she was.”Marcy!Judy!”she shouted. A faint voice .”Momma!”It was Judy. Ruth screamed into the darkness “Judy, where are you?” Off to her right and down the cliff she heard, “Down here,Mother!Don’t come near the edge! I slipped on loose rocks and fell over. I’m down about ten feet.” “Oh dear! Judy, what can I do?” “Just stay back, Momma!” Facing the situation, Ruth felt her heart was pounding, and chest pains almost took her breath away. She started to sob, totally at a loss what to do. 注 意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右: 2. 请在答题卡的相应位置作答。 At that moment, Ruth glimpsed at the walking stick, an idea striking her.______________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Ruth held her close and said anxiously. “Judy. We have to get help for Marcy!”___________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ (六) Lungs nearly burst. I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached the end of the pool. The extent of my swimming career was purely recreational, while the competitive swimmers nearby thought nothing of the seemingly simple task of a 500-meter swim test. Pushing myself to finish what I had started, I could only think: why not take the easy way out? Earlier that week, I had turned in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified, I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide (滑梯).I was capable of more. So a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was not completely helpless in a pool. Midway through, the manager administering the test remarked, "This looks really easy for you. Why aren't you applying to become a guard?” “The thought didn't cross my mind.” "Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $ 2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is complete a certification class." Inside I was unsure of myself, but his words inspired me — You never know what you are capable of until you force yourself to do it. Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR (心肺复苏),and procedures for different land-based and water-based emergencies. Work started soon. A well-intentioned yet anxious feeling in me soon passed. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and acquired seemed unnecessary. Today appeared to be another uneventful day. However, shortly after the other guards signaled to the children to exit the pool, I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up. 注意: 1.所续写短文的词数应为 150 词左右; 2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好; (七) Holidays are not necessarily for fun or rest. Doing something meaningful can also gain special pleasure. When the final bell rang, the students were reminded that there was no school on Monday—the Labor Day. “Enjoy your extra day off,”said the teacher to her class. An extra day of fun suited Kayla just fine. She loved breaks. She wanted to go out to play with her friends. When the school bus dropped Kayla off, she ran into the house happily. “How was school, Kayla?” asked her mom. “It was great, Mom. I am excited about no school on Monday. ” “You just started back to school two weeks ago. Already in need of a break, huh?” asked Kayla’s mom with a laugh. Kayla slept in the next morning. Saturday was her favorite day of the week. It rained most of the day, so Kayla enjoyed playing video games inside. On Sunday, her friends came over and they played basketball for several hours. Then it was Labor Day, you know, the extra day off that Kayla was so looking forward to. But Kayla was awakened early that morning by her dad. He told Kayla that in honor of Labor Day, the family would be cleaning both inside and outside the house. Kayla couldn’t believe it. This was a holiday. A day when she was supposed to be enjoying freshly squeezed lemonade while playing in her tree house. As Kayla wiped her eyes, she began to wonder if this was just a bad dream. “Kayla, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today. Let’s get a move on, ”said Kayla’s mom. As she sat down at the kitchen table, Kayla asked her parents, “Are you serious about working today? Isn’t Labor Day a holiday?” Paragraph 1: ''Something must have gone wrong with him," I thought to myself. Paragraph 2: Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck. “Yes, Kayla. It is, ” replied her dad. “But your mom and I thought working hard today would make you appreciate why Labor Day was observed in the first place. ” Paragraph1: At first, Kayla felt disappointed at her parents’plan for the holiday. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: But things began to change as she was doing the chores. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ (八) It was my first university day of new term, which I had been looking forward to in the summer vacation. Mother decided Dad should accompany me though I thought I could manage it myself. Everything here appeared a little fresh to me; yet I still had a butterfly in my stomach. The letter of admission said my dormitory was Room 512 on the fifth floor. I climbed the stairs slowly, carrying a big suitcase, my father following with two bigger more. By the time I set foot onto the fifth floor, I got entirely burnt out and at the same time had a feeling of loneliness. Worse still, Dad missed a step and fell on his back, sending my new suitcases rolling down the stairs. “Damn it! (见鬼!)” he screamed, his face turning red. I knew storm was on the way. Whenever Dad's face turns red, look out. How could I ever get him to finish unloading the car without screaming at me and making a scene in front of the other girls, whom I would have to spend the rest of the year with? At that point, doors along the narrow passage were opening and strange faces peering out (探出) with curiosity, as Dad walked with difficulty close behind. I felt it in my bones that my college life was getting off to a bad start. “Wish to find the room quickly!” I prayed as I walked with my head bent. "Get him into a chair and calmed down." But then again, would there be a chair in my dormitory? Or would it be a purely empty room? I didn't know what was in store for me. 注意: 1. 续写短文为 150 词左右; 2. 续写部分共为两段,每段的开头语已写好。 Finally I arrived at Room 512. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ And there on a wellmade bed sat a girl, my new roommate. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ (九) When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a little dog followed them home after school. It had short legs and long lovely ears, with a fawn-colored coat. It was the cutest dog I had over seen and the girls begged me to keep it. The dog was barely twelve weeks old. It had no collar or identifying marks of any sort, I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an advertisement in the lost-and-found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, its owners should have watched it more closely. By the end of the week the dog was part of our family. It was very intelligent and good with the girls. The following week something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular advertisement jumped out at me and my heart pounded with fear at what I read. Someone was begging for the return of a lost dog in the neighborhood of our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook. I couldn't bring myself to pick up the phone. Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the advertisement. I quickly put paper away in the drawer and continued with my dusting. I never said a word about it to the kids or my husband. By now we had named the dog. It looked like a Molly, so that was what we called it. It followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, it was one step behind them. When they did housework, it was there to lend a hand. There was only one problem with this otherwise perfect picture: my conscience was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the dog they were desperately seeking. It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. 注意: 1.续写词数应为 150 左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 With mixed feelings, I finally picked up the phone. Opening the door, I saw a woman with a little girl sitting in a small wheelchair (十) Alex was very excited because the New Year Eve was approaching. Suddenly, he saw his grandfather sitting alone looking very unhappy. Alex went to him and asked, “Grandpa, why are you sitting alone? Is there anything wrong with you?” His grandfather replied, “No, I am fine. I just feel like sitting alone.” “Grandpa, you know the New Year is near, so are you preparing for it?” asked Alex excitedly. “No dear, I am not. With the passage of time, the world has completely changed and I don’t see any point in celebrating the world I see today,” answered his grandfather disappointedly. “I know something is wrong with you and you are not telling me. Please tell me what the problem is.” Alex said. “I feel I am a stranger in the world I am living in. It is not the same as I have known. Now everyone is busy with their own work. Your father is busy with business, your brother is busy on the computer, your sister is busy studying abroad and your mum is busy with household work. I don’t know how to pass my days,” said his grandfather sadly. “Grandpa, you have me!” said Alex. His grandfather smiled and said, “Yeah, you are here, but what about others? In our days, we had a fixed time each day when the whole family sat together and talked, shared problems and laughed together.” That night Alex thought about what his grandfather had said and an idea flashed through his mind. He decided to have a surprise New Year party at his own home and make everyone come together that day. As New Year’s Eve got nearer, Alex got busy preparing for the party. He kept it a secret from his grandfather and asked everyone not to let him know about it in order to surprise him. Paragraph 1: It was December 31 and everyone was busy with their own work. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Alex saw his grandfather looking very happy while talking with the family members. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ (十一) A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people hardly visited. The house was very old and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out he would not say hello to neighbors or passers by but simply just glare(瞪 眼看)at them. The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy's parents told him to stay away from the house. A lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same from their parents. As he was ready to walk away , the door slowly opened. " What do you want?" the old man said. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota(份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines. "Uh, sir, I uh am selling these magazines and uh I was wondering if you would like to buy one." The old man just stared at the boy. The boy could see inside the old man's house and saw that he had dog figurines(小狗雕像) on the wall. "Do you collect dogs?" the little boy asked. "Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here. They are all I have." The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul. "Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much." The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, "No boy, I don't need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye." The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the big house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family. Paragraph 1: The boy headed back down to the old man's house with the figurine. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: From that day on something changed inside the old man. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ (十二) I was lacking in everything needed to start a new friendship. My parents moved to the town when they decided to look for new jobs but they didn’t realize I was really hurt when I said goodbye to my old friends. It felt awful to be a new student in the school and when my classmates were chatting, what I could do was to be caught up in my thoughts watching the clouds outside the window. I was not good at math or history; nor was I good at drawing or dancing. I was shy and timid. I had a few friends back at my hometown and it seemed that they were the only ones who I could be friends with for my whole life. I felt I had achieved a point of saturation with regard to having friends and I could make no further addition to my friend list. I was ashamed of myself, so I believed I deserved no notice from others until Emily came to my world. Emily was fearless, outspoken and easy to go. She was everything I was not and I was too shy to come out of my shell. I met Emily in school almost every day and yet I never talked to her. We were in the same class but we were like poles apart. How I wished I could be like her or at least be a friend of hers! It was another ordinary day. I wandered to the bus stop in the morning and waited for the school bus. Birds were singing songs with their friends but who could I sing songs with? I got on the bus and went straight to my usual seat, complaining in a low voice about getting up early and going to school like every other day, and about how things were going to be the same all over again. Little did I realize something different would happen that day. Para. 1: When I got up to get down the bus, my schoolbag was stuck in the armrest. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ Para. 2: I got noticed by Emily, who brought me courage to start a new friendship! _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________ (十三) It was my first university day of new term, which I had been looking forward to in the summer vacation. He always desired to have lots and lots of wealth and never hesitated to cheat others to earn money. Also, he never wished to share anything with others. He was so selfish that he would like to own everything for himself. Simply put, Rohan was the antonym(反义词)of the word honesty. However, he was taught a nice lesson by one of his own acts. One day, he lost a small bag, which contained 50 gold coins. He was searching for the bag of gold coins day and night. He ordered his workers to look for the bag, but none could find it. He told his friends and neighbors that he had lost a bag of gold coins and requested them to inform him if they found it. Rohan was so sad that he had lost so many gold coins. After a couple of days, a ten-year-old girl, who lived near Rohan’s house, told her father that she had found a small bag with 50 gold coins in it. Her father worked on Rohan’s land. He told his daughter that it was Rohan’s money and he had lost it two days before and added that he would return the bag to Rohan. They weren’t very rich and could have kept the gold coins for themselves and hidden the fact that they had found the bag. But the father was so honest that he decided to return the valuable coins to Rohan, who really owned it. He gave it back to Rohan and asked him to check whether the bag contained 50 gold coins. Rohan, who was happy to get the coins, decided to play a trick. He shouted at his worker, “There were 75 gold coins in this bag and you gave me only 50! Where are the other coins? You have stolen them!” 注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右; 2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 The worker was shocked to hear this. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________ The judge asked, “Are you sure you had 75 coins?” ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________
