For seniors, this task is even more challenging. Concordia University's ACT project team has joined with munity partners in the neighbourhood to fill this gap. They've rapidly created a new program—COVID word 文档 - 3 - / 11 -19 Grocery Response NDG. The program uses a model that pairs volunteers with seniors, based on availability and language. Those volunteers are trained by ACT's team via video conferencing and then given a list of older adults. The volunteer calls the individuals and takes their order, working with grocery offerings of a Provigo store in the areA. When the call is over, the order gets sent to Provigo, which gathers and delivers the order to the senior. It won't take the place of the work of the food bank; seniors are paying for their groceries. There is also an important social element in the call, which doubles as a friendly check -in. The volunteer chats a bit with the senior, who may be very lonely and anxious. One volunteer says it has also been a rewarding experience and gives her the opportunity to help others while staying at home, which they are all being encouraged to do. The program is a response to a number of factors, including the fact that many older adults are on a fixed ine and may not have the Internet access needed to order groceries online. It is targeting seniors who aren't able to access New Hope's usual meals on wheels service. So far the project is a success, with a growing number of volunteers and seniors. As for what's next, Concordia is optimistic but acknowledges that the team will need to be nimble to acmodate the changing realities of the COVID-19 pandemic. While everyone fears denials on some level, it is important to understand that not everyone will fit in with every job. Further, there are times when the applicant quality will be so great, a decision to reject an applicant may not stand for that applicant's abilities but the overall quality of the field. There are a number of methods that can be used to get the message across that a person is not hired. In many cases, especially for those who have never been called for an interview, a simple form letter may be sufficient. In other cases, where someone may have been called for an interview, a phone call or letter could be chosen to deliver the message that they were not hired. In cases where there may be an ongoing relationship with the person not hired, it may be best to break the news in person, though this has the obvious potential of being more unfortable. Above all, it is best to always be honest with those who didn't get the job. Lying is never acceptable. Generally, it is not a good idea to tell someone specific reasons why they are not hired for a job. This can only lead to resentment (怨恨) and regret. However, there may be specific times when this could be a good ideA . For example, if an applicant is promising and the hiring manager believes another position will be opening up that suits the applicant's skills, this could be a way to let that person know they may soon have another opportunity. In all cases, even if you feel someone has cheated to obtain an interview, never behave in a way which shows you are superior to them. This is unprofessional and reflects very poorly not only on the hiring manager, but on the organization as a whole. word 文档 - 6 - / 11 8.Why are some applicants refused according to paragraph 1? A.They are interested in other fields. B.They aren't qualified for the position. C.They are afraid of making decisions. D.They lack the courage to face failures. 根据第一段中的“it is important to understand that not everyone will fit in with every job”可知,不是每个人都适合做每份工作。 B 9.How may a not-interviewed applicant be informed of the rejection? A.By receiving a formal phone call. B.By getting a simple form letter. C.By checking a message online. D.By attending a personal meeting. 根据第二段中的“for those who have never been called for an interview,a simple form letter may be sufficient.” B 10.In what case will applicants be told exactly why they are not hired? A.They regret applying for the job. B.They demand specific explanations. C.They may be capable of another post. D.They have submitted false information. 根据第三段中的“it is not...if an applicant is promising and the hiring manager believes another position will be opening up that suits the applicant's skills...another opportunity”可知,如果申请人非常有潜力,而且招聘主管认为另一个职位 将会适合申请人,那么就会给他们解释原因并告诉他们有别的机会。 答案:C 11.What can be inferred about the position of hiring managers? A.It calls for professional skills. word 文档 - 7 - / 11 B.It attracts the applicants most. C.It doesn't allow for any mistake. D.It requires honesty and ambition. 根据最后一段中的“even if you feel...never behave in a way which shows you are superior to them. This is unprofessional and reflects...as a whole”可知, 即使你觉得有人为了获得面试机会而作弊,也不要表现得高高在上,盛气凌人。 答案:A D (2021·八省市联考模拟卷)The average bear, it seems, is getting ever smarter. First, it turned out that at least one can use a b. Now it appears that some can count, too. Jennifer Vonk, of Oakland University, in Michigan, and Michael Beran, from Georgia State University, set three American black bears the task of distinguishing between numerically larger and smaller groups of dots (点) on a puter screen. In return for a food reward one bear, Brutus, would touch the more heavily dotted pattern with his nose. The others, Bella and Dusty, would touch the screen with their claws (爪子). As the researchers report in AnimalBehavior, the bears did best with patterns where the coloured dots did not move and where more of them also took up a larger coloured areA. This could be explained by the bears' distinguishing the different areas of colour rather than truly counting the dots. However, the three bears managed to pick out the bigger number of dots even in pairs of patterns where fewer dots took up a larger areA. Moving patterns, where each dot followed its own path around the screen, were more of a challenge. But Brutus, at least, was not defeated. He seemed to be counting mobile dots even when the scientists tried to mislead him by moving the total coloured area of the dots at the same time. It is not entirely surprising that bears should have a high degree of intelligence. They face a lot of challenges when trying to get food. They are, however, always alone, and so do not have the plex social systems that contribute to animal smarts. Perhaps, then, their maths skill developed because they cannot count on their friends for help. word 12.What task did the scientists set for the three bears? A.Distinguishing different dot patterns. B.Figuring out different colours of dots. C.Putting the dots into differently coloured groups. D.Picking out the group with a larger number of dots. 根据第二段中的“...set three American black bears the task of distinguishing between numerically larger and smaller groups of dots on a puter screen.” A 13.For the bears, the task was easier when . A.the coloured dots were moving slowly B.the dot patterns were regular in shape C.the dots followed a path on the screen D.more dots covered a larger coloured area 根据第三段中的“...the bears did best with patterns where the coloured dots did not move and where more of them also took up a larger coloured areA.” D 14.What may explain the bears' high degree of intelligence? A.They learn skills from other animals. B.They face life challenges on their own. C.They feed on a diverse range of food. D.They have plex social networks. 根据最后一段中的“... a high degree of intelligence. They face a lot of challenges... They are, however, always alone, and so do not have the plex social systems... Perhaps, then, their maths skill developed because they cannot count on their friends for help.” B 15.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.Bears Taught to Distinguish Colours B.New Evidence of Bear Intelligence Found C.Three Bears Learned How to Count D.The Smartest American Black Bear Brutus 根据第一段中的“Now it appears that some can count, too.” 阅读七选五 (2021·某某 5 校高三教学质量检测)Wanda Austin, an internationally celebrated engineer and aerospace industry (航空航天工业) leader, has been a part of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) industry since her earliest professional days working at Rockwell International. 16 Raised in a low-ine neighborhood in the Bronx, Dr. Austin always favored math in school above all else; she found fort in the fact that math's answers couldn't be argued.17 It wasn't until she started working as an engineering tutor when receiving the higher education that she realized what she really wanted to be occupied in: STEM. Austin began working at Aerospace as one of the few female engineers, a trend that hasn't changed much between her start at the pany in 1982 and now. 18 The success in the GPS satellite, Air Force munications and the Pentagon's global network of strategic munications, all led to her eventual promotion to CEO and President of Aerospace. 19 Her most recent mitment is to motivate the next generation of learners to study STEM disciplines, as she hopes to serve as a role model for young women and minorities looking to go down similar paths. And she's started programs to strengthen STEM learning for everyone. Austin's advice for aspiring engineers is around something you might not expect.20 word 文档 - 10 - / 11 To her, it is just as important to study as it is to be able to talk about the impact of the STEM work to those outside of the disciplines.
