二、阅读理解
When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s,
we had a milkman delivering(送) milk to our doorstep. His name
was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a
5yearold boy,I couldn't take my eyes off the coin changer(硬
币盒) fixed to his belt.He noticed this one day during a delivery
and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.
Of course,he delivered more than milk. There was cheese,
eggs and so on.If we needed to change our order,my mother
would pen a note — “Please add a bottle of buttermilk next
delivery.”—and place it in the box along with the empty
bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear.
All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a
close relationship between families and their milkmen.
Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when
it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors,so that the
milk wouldn't freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to
time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea
and telling stories about his delivery.
There is sadly no home milk delivery today.Big companies
allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it
difficult for milkmen to compete.
Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have
been practical to have a delivery service.
Recently,an old milk box in the countryside I saw
brought back my childhood memories.I took it home and
planted it on the back porch(门廊).Every so often my son's
friends will ask what it is.So I start telling stories of my
boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along
with his milk.

Last year, many Chinese cities like Chongqing and Taiyuan
began to try their best to do something special. It was called “give
way at the zebra crossing”.
These cities ask drivers to stop when they see people walking
through zebra road crossings,Xinhua New Agency reported. If
they don't,they will have to pay a fine(罚款) of 100 to 500
yuan. They will also lose three points on their driver's licenses.
In fact, this is not a new rule.China added it to the Road
Traffic Safety Law in 2011.Why has it become more popular
now?Because many cities are working harder to carry it
out. There are now more cameras at zebra crossings as well as
workers who can explain the rule to drivers.
Zebra crossings can help keep people safe. But in the past
three years,3‚898 people have lost their lives in 14‚000 zebra
crossing accidents in China, reported China Daily.
Most of the accidents happened because drivers wouldn't give
way to people on foot.
With this rule, people will be safer when crossing the
street.However,not all people welcome it,especially
drivers.“It seems that we can be punished easily. What about
those who run a red light?Whose fault will it be?” some
drivers complained.Therefore,enjoying the politeness of
drivers,we should return ours by following the traffic rules
and crossing the road quickly at the same time.

A Precious Present
The title “A Precious Present” reminds me of quite a few
gifts I've got.Yet,the first come to my mind is the book,The
Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
On my tenth birthday,my father gave it to me as a
gift.Because I didn't like reading,I put it on the bookshelf.One
boring day,I picked it up and looked through it.Unexpectedly,
the story interested me greatly.I found pleasure in reading
books. From then on,I became fascinated in reading.
Though the book is not valuable,it's precious.I'll regard it
as a treasure forever.
