In size it is nearly equal to the area of North and South America. However, it presents a hostile (不友好的) environment. Temperatures range +120 to -150 degrees Centigrade. There is no air, and no water.      Today there is considerable scientific speculation (思索) about living on the moon. When man will begin life on the moon surface is still not determined. But experts believe that settlement will take place in three steps. First, there will be increasing periods of exploration with temporary shelters. These periods will be followed by longer stays with housing under the surface of the moon and daily necessities brought by the settlers themselves from the earth. Finally, settlements that are self-supporting will be founded.      The main job of the early settlers will be to stay alive. They will have to plant crops under huge domes (圆顶屋) to produce food and oxygen and find water sources. After this is done, the settlers will have time to explore the possibilities of commercial (商业的) development and to make discoveries important to science. The characteristics of the moon that make it bad for human staying alive may make it ideal for certain kinds of manufacturing (制造业). Operations requiring a vacuum (真空) or extreme cold are examples. Therefore, industrial diamonds might be produced on the moon. 56. The area of the moon is _________. A. about the same as that of North and South America B. larger than that of North and South America C. hardly equal to that of North and South America D. far smaller than that of North and South America 57. To stay alive on the moon, the early settlers must first of all be able to ______.    A. get enough food, oxygen and water                    B. develop commerce    C. make discoveries important    D. explore the possibilities of industrial development 58. Though the environment on the moon is bad for human staying alive, it is very good for ________.    A. all kinds of manufactured goods                 B. commercial development    C. making such things as industrial diamonds   D. medical operations B Love, success, happiness, family and freedom——how important are these values to you? Here is one interview which explores the fundamental questions in life. Question: Could you introduce yourself first? Answer: My name is Misbah, 27 years old. I was born in a war-torn area. A: My parents supported me until I came of age. I want to give back what I’ve got.    That’s our way. But I am working in another city. My only contact with my      parents now is through the phone, but I hate using it. It filters(过滤)out your    emotion and leaves your voice only. My deepest feelings should be passed    through sight, hearing and touch. 59. It happened in the northern end of Queensland, Australia, where all kinds of animals live in the forest. Lisa, a 33-year-old woman, went to prepare lunch in the kitchen, leaving Barney, her three-year-old son, playing by himself in the back garden. Suddenly, a sharp cry of Barney came into the mother’s ears, and Lisa rushed into the backyard in a hurry and found a big snake entwining(缠绕)the little child with its terrible body and trying to eat the boy as its delicious dish! It was a boa(蟒)!Lisa was terrified and quite angry. She made up her mind to save her son from the snake’s mouth. It was fearless(not afraid)mother love that made Lisa forget what she faced. She took up an old hoe(锄)from the ground and beat the boa with all her strengtht. One…two…With the hoe, Lisa beat the snake repeatedly, but useless. The little boy’s voice and breath were getting weaker and weaker. Lisa’s heart was broken and she got nearly mad! She bit the snake with her teeth. Blood was spurting(喷射)out of the boa’s body and covered most of Lisa’s body. The boa was so badly wounded that it let go of Barney and moved back into the forest hurriedly. It had never known how a man had such terrible sharp teeth! On halfway home, the boa died. It was fearless mother love that saved the little boy. 63. When she came into the back garden, Lisa found___________.        A. her son was playing with a snake              B. a boa eating her son        C. her son in danger of losing his life     D. Barney was fighting with a boa 64. The best title of this passage is___________.        A. Mother and Boa                         B. Fearless Mother Love     C. Short-term goals are those that usually deal with present activities. Such goals can be achieved in a week or two, or possible months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation (基础), our long-term goals cannot be achieved without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the time and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school years, or they could extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you never allow yourself to become discouraged. As you complete each step, you will have more belief in your ability to grow and succeed. Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static (静态的) thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action. 67. The long-term goals mean______. A. something static and easy to get if we complete our short-term goals B. something easy to reach if we complete a short-term goal in time C. nothing but our dreams of future D. a lot, such as a dream, and aspiration (热望) or a wish in our life 68. When we complete each step of our goals, ___________. A. we will win final success                       B. we become down-hearted C. we should encourage ourselves             D. we should think about changing our goals 69. It is the most important for us students to have ________ first.    A. long-term goals                            B. intermediate goals    C. short-term goals                                      D. dreams of future 70. For example, some people believe that if they have lots of money, they will be happy, for they can do anything they like, which means happiness. On the other hand, some people believe that holding a high position in the government is happiness. In this way, you have not only money, but also many other things which can't be bought by money. However, other people believe health is happiness. They think it can bring them enjoyment. For me, happiness is my studies, my work and my family. When I made progress in my studies, when I made contributions to the society, when all the members in my family live together, sharing good and sad times, I am happy. Although people have different opinion on happiness, my “wealth” of happiness is in my studies, my work, and my family. 附:听力材料 TEXT 1 M: How about my food?
