I would return from school and spend the expected half hour recording the day's events, feelings, and impressions in my little ‎ blue diary. I did not really need to express my emotions by way of words, but I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isn't accumulating memories a way of preserving the past? When I was thirteen years old, I went on a long journey on foot in a great valley, well-equipped with pens, a diary, and a camera. During the trip, I was busy recording every incident, name and place I came across. I felt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night there, I wandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the glare of the moon, and the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their screen of shadows. I automatically took out my pen... At that point, I understood that nothing I wrote could ever match or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley. All I remembered of the previous few days were the dull characterizations I had set down in my diary. Now, I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling. I still love to record ideas and quotations that strike me in books, or observations that are particularly meaningful. I take pictures, but not very often—only of objects I find really beautiful. I'm no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when I grow old. I realize that life will simply pass me by if I stay behind the camera, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future. I don't want to wake up one day and have nothing but a pile of pictures and notes. Maybe I won't have as many exact representations of people and places; maybe I'll forget certain facts, but at least the experiences will always remain inside me. I don't live to make memories—I just live, and the memories form themselves. 21. Before the age of thirteen, the author regarded keeping a diary as a way of ______.‎ A. observing her school routine B. expressing her satisfaction C. impressing her classmates D. preserving her history ‎22. What caused a change in the author’s understanding of keeping a diary?‎ A. A dull night on the journey. B. The beauty of the great valley.‎ C. A striking quotation from a book. D. Her concerns for future generations.‎ ‎23. What does the author put in her diary now?‎ A. Notes and beautiful pictures. B. Special thoughts and feelings.‎ C. Detailed accounts of daily activities. D. Descriptions of unforgettable events.‎ ‎24. The author comes to realize that to live a meaningful life is ______.‎ A. to experience it B. to live the present in the future C. to make memories D. to give accurate representations of it B One evening last summer, when I asked my 14-year-old son, Ray, for help with dinner, his response shocked me. "What’s a colander(漏勺)? " he asked.‎ ‎ I could only blame myself. In the family, nobody else’s hands went in the sauce except my own. But that night, as I explained with a touch of panic that a colander is the thing with holes in ‎ it, I wondered what else I hadn’t prepared Ray for.‎ ‎ As parents, while we focus on our sons’ confidence and character, we perhaps don’t always consider that we are also raising someone’s future roommates, boyfriends, husbands, or fathers. I wanted to know that I’d raised a boy who would never ask the woman in his life, "What’s for dinner?" So I came up with a plan: I would offer Ray a private home economics course. I was delighted to find that he didn’t say no. For two hours, three days a week, Ray was all mine. One day, as his tomato sauce reduced on the stove, he washed and seasoned a chicken for roasting. Then he rolled out the piecrust (馅饼皮) and filled it with apples, all while listening to my explanation on the importance of preheating an oven.‎ ‎ I knew that he would rather have been shooting hoops in the driveway than learning to mend socks with his mother—he tried to beg off sewing lessons, even though I insisted that one day, someone would find the sight of him fixing his own shirt very attractive— but it couldn’t be denied that he was learning, and more than just housekeeping. "I appreciate what you do as a mom," he told me one day. Ray now understands the finer points of cooking, and more importantly, he realizes there’s nothing masculine (男子气概的) about being helpless. ‎ ‎ Now, not only can he make his own dinner, but also he can make a big meal for his family. That’s what I call a man. I’m glad that I prepared so great a present for my future daughter-in-law.‎ ‎25. Why was the author shocked at her son’s response?‎ ‎ A. Because he was not well behaved.‎ ‎ B. Because he refused to help with dinner.‎ ‎ C. Because he didn’t know the common kitchen tools.‎ ‎ D. Because he was very curious about kitchen tools.‎ ‎26. In‎ the author’s opinion, some parents pay little attention to _______.‎ ‎ A. building up children’s confidence ‎ ‎ B. telling kids what is right and wrong ‎ C. preparing children for their future life ‎ ‎ D. making children live a hard life ‎27. After learning to do housework, Ray _______.‎ ‎ A. fell in love with sewing B. did other work in the house ‎ C. began to be more hardworking D. acknowledged his mother's efforts ‎28. We can infer from the text that Ray_______.‎ ‎ A. made great progress in cooking B. always thought housework interesting ‎ C. preferred sewing to cooking. D. was unwilling to learn cooking at first C How soon will it be before robots become so intelligent that they will be able to do things, such as teaching languages or looking after patients in hospital? Some experts believe this will happen within twenty years while others disagree.‎ One London company,UAS (University Automated Systems) has already developed some machines that can be used as "home helps" for old people unable to look after themselves and who are living on their own or in special homes. These machines can now do such things as cooking eggs and cleaning the floor, and the company says that future models will also accept simple voice ‎ instructions and be controlled by a “brain” that is the equivalent(替代品) of the latest IBM microcomputer. The director of UAS, Mr. Henry Jeffries, believes that in the next five to ten years companies will have developed even more sophisticated(复杂的) robots for use in industry. By that time, it is likely that they will also have begun to sell new forms of these machines into ordinary homes. Robots could do a wide range of household tasks, such as preparing meals, washing dishes, cleaning houses and so on. By then, the price of such machines may have come down to as little as $1,000.‎ But Dr. Sandra Lomax, who has done some research into artificial intelligence at Sussex‎ ‎University and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology),believes we have a long way to go before we can develop truly intelligent machines.‎ Preparing an omelet (煎蛋) may seem easy enough. But suppose one of the eggs has gone bad even the most "intelligent" robot would probably still use it. If something slightly unusual needs doing—something that requires a little of ordinary human imagination,a robot is useless. They need programming for even the simplest of tasks and are not able to learn from experience. "Teaching a robot how to recognize a bad egg is far more difficult than teaching it to prepare the omelet," she says. ‎ ‎29. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?‎ A. Servants of the Future B. How to Make Robots C. Difficult to Develop Intelligent Robots ‎ D. The Household Tasks in Future D ‎ A new study has found evidence of aggressive behavior in children who drink four or more ‎ servings of soft drinks every day. Information for the study came from the mothers of 3,000 5yearolds. Researchers asked the women to keep a record of how many servings of soft drinks their children drank over a twomonth period. They were also asked to complete a checklist of their children's behavior.‎ ‎ The researchers have found that 43 percent of the children drink at least one daily serving of soda, and 4 percent of the youngsters have even four or more sodas to drink every day.‎ ‎ Shakira Suglia, a famous expert, says they've found that children who drink the most soda are more than twice as likely as those who drink no soda to show signs of aggression.‎ ‎ “For the children who consume four or more soft drinks per day, we see more withdrawn behaviors, which make them hard to get along well with others.”‎ ‎ The aggressive behaviors include destroying possessions belonging to others, taking part in fights and physically attacking people.‎ ‎ The researchers have determined the link after considering factors like the child's age and sex. They have also considered other possible influence, such as whether the boys and girls are eating sweets or giving fruit drinks on a normal day. In addition, the researchers have examined parenting styles and other social conditions that may be taking place in the home.‎ ‎ Researches are trying to find why young children who drink a lot of soda have behavior problems. An ingredient often found in soft drinks is caffeine, which helps to make people feel energetic. Doctor Suglia suggests that caffeine could cause the 5yearolds to be more aggressive. Earlier studies of adults have found the highest sugar levels in those who carry weapons and show signs of negative social behavior.‎ ‎33.
