Hard Work Pays Off ‎ C ‎ There are many important expressions that we need to pay much attention to in the study of Eng-‎ lish. "A ball of energy" is one of them. People often use the term to describe very active children. But today we tell about an invention called the Soccket, which is a real ball of energy. Julia Silverman and Jessica Matthews developed the Soccket as part of a group project for an engineering class at Harvard University.‎ ‎ To better understand what a Soccket is, you first need to understand how it works.‎ ‎ When you play with the ball, there is all this energy being transferred to the ball-even any nor-‎ mal soccer ball. Basically, what we're trying to do is instead of letting that energy spread into the envi-‎ ronment or just be lost, we're controlling it inside using these mechanisms. Everything that is con-‎ trolled is then stored in a battery of sorts. The Soccket collects and stores this energy with every kick,‎ hit of throw of the ball. Then the user can plug any accessory(附件 ) directly into the ball, like a lamp to study, or a cell phone charger.‎ ‎ For every fifteen minutes of game play, the Soccket can provide enough electricity to power an LED lamp for up to three hours. The ball can store up to twenty-four hours' worth of power.‎ ‎ The International Energy Association reported last year that nearly one and a half billion people did not have access to electricity. Most of them live in sub-Saharan Africa and in India and other countries in Asia.‎ ‎ Julia Silverman and Jessica Matthews both had experience in developing countries before they be-‎ gan the project. They knew that power shortages are a serious problem in many areas. Ms. Silverrnan says the soccket is one small solution to a big problem. Julia Silverman said, "And so we knew that just a little bit of light would make a huge difference. And we also knew that soccer was the most pop-‎ ular sport, most loved sport in the whole world."‎ ‎ Jessica Matthews and Julia Silverman have started a nonprofit organization called Uncharted Play.‎ They hope their Soccket ball will shine more light on the problem of power shortages. It offers people a chance to put their energy into the world's most popular sport and get some energy in return.‎ ‎28. What does the underline phrase a ball of energy" in Paragraph l mean?‎ ‎ A. A real ball of energy. B. A normal soccer ball.‎ ‎ C. An active child. D. Soccket.‎ ‎29. Why is Soccket admitted as“a real ball of energy"?‎ ‎ A. It collects and stores energy by kicking, hitting or throwing the ball.‎ ‎ B. It can be used as the lamp to study or the cell phone charger.‎ ‎ C. It can store up to twenty-four hours'worth of power.‎ ‎ D. It is as active as the energetic children.‎ ‎30. What can we infer from the passage?‎ ‎ A. Soccer is very popular in the world, so Soccket must be popular as well.‎ ‎ B. Since soccer is most loved in the world, we can make use of it to get some energy.‎ ‎ C. When people kick the ball, they store the energy into the ball.‎ ‎ D. Power shortage is the most serious problem in the world.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ ‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂 黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ Although most games have winners and losers, the goal of sports is not to win every game. The re-‎ al goals include getting exercises, having fun, and learning important social skills, like sportsmanship.‎ ‎ Good sportsmanship is all about respect. Good sports(具有运动家品格的人)respect the other players on their team. They respect the players on opposing teams. They respect coaches, and they al-‎ so respect the referees or other officials involved in their games. 31 They yell at their teammates and they talk back to coaches or referees.‎ ‎ Kids usually learn sportsmanship-good and bad-from the adults in their lives. 32 If par-‎ ents and coaches show disrespect to other fans, referees, or each other, kids will likely act the same way on the field.‎ ‎ 33 Some of them are very basic and easy to do, like shaking hands with other players be-‎ fore a game. Other examples may take a little more courage, such as acknowledging a great play made by the opposing team.‎ ‎ Learning good sportsmanship is important because it helps you develop an attitude of graciousness ‎(礼貌) and respect that will carry over into all the other areas of your life! 34 Being a good sport in the classroom will eventually lead to being a good sport in the workplace.‎ ‎ So be a good sport in whatever you do! 35_ When others see you acting in a way that makes it clear that winning isn't the most important thing, you can move on to focusing on the important things, like having fun, getting exercise, and improving your skills.‎ ‎ A. If you're a good sport on the field, you'll also likely be a good sport in the classroom.‎ ‎ B. Starting as a good sport earlier will help you be a good sport as you get old.‎ ‎ C. We can be good sports by encouraging others but not laughing at them.‎ ‎ D. Players' parents and coaches set examples that kids tend to follow.‎ ‎ E.
