The wonderful fighting abilities and the world-saving adventures are much more colourful than most people’s everyday lives. Well, Cody Banks is just like any other boy, except that he is not just dreaming. He has a big secret his friends never know about. He was trained to be a spy (间谍) by a special CIA programme, which was made to look like a summer camp. He learned high-speed driving, hand-to-hand fighting and the use of high-tech tools.‎ After proving he could become a young hero by saving a baby from a runaway car, Banks gets his first real task. He must make friends with a popular girl at school, Natalie Connors. Then, he must spy on her father, a scientist who has developed a dangerous technology. Banks must stop a group of bad people from forcing Natalie’s father into using the technology to endanger the world.‎ The CIA may have taught him first-class self-defence moves, but they didn’t show him how to talk to girls. Banks has zero ability when it comes to dealing with girls. How can he get around his problem and get an invitation to the girl’s upcoming birthday party? Will he finally become Natalie’s boyfriend and find out whatever he can about her father’s work?‎ Agent Cody Banks has everything that young people are interested in: big explosions, breathtaking performances and funny girl-dating experiences. You see, I have to go everywhere these days with a walker, and folks are constantly holding or opening doors for me, so this was not unusual. ‎ However, I told the gentleman that the door had an automatic opener, and he did not need to stay to hold it open. He said, “Here I thought I would have an opportunity to be helpful.”‎ At that, I backed up, let the door close, and allowed him to reopen the door, not using the automatic control this time. His comment then was “Well, now I feel like that I have accomplished ‎ something helpful and worthwhile today.”‎ We never know how someone else is feeling. We seniors seem to feel we can take care of ourselves at all times. That random act of kindness brightened not only my day, but to my joy and delight, also the day of that white-haired senior citizen. I felt a glow for the rest of the day, and, hopefully, so did he!‎ So, gentle readers, never hesitate to offer kindness. In other words, this is an attempt to control their shopping habits in a way that they might hardly be aware of.”‎ ‎“Often we are told that we have the freedom to choose where we want to shop, but during Christmas the use of music in this way is so common that our freedom to choose disappears.”‎ Dr Bradshaw and Professor Morris Holbrook of Columbia University examined the phenomenon and found that retailers often “dumb down” the music played in shops to relax customers, meaning it is easier to control their behaviour.‎ It is thought that slowing down the rhythm of music in shops can trick customers into thinking less time has passed, and therefore they spend more time examining the shelves, for example.‎ Some providers of background music have been known to promote their services by claiming they can boost profits by controlling the behaviour of customers.‎ ‎“A common trick is to take a popular current song and record an instrumental version which can be slowed down or sped up at different time of the day to influence behaviour in different ways,” Dr Bradshaw said.‎ Background music is often classed as “Muzak” in honour of the Seattlebased company which began producing its softsounding melodies in the 1930s.‎ ‎28. According to Dr Bradshaw, in what ways does Christmas music influence customers?‎ ‎①their mood ②their income ③their sense of time ④the sort of products they buy A. ①②③ B. ①③④ C. ②③④ D. ①②④‎ ‎29. Shopkeepers slow down the rhythm of music in shops to ________.‎ A. let customers spend more time shopping B. make customers and sales assistants relaxed C. let customers enjoy the beautiful music D. help customers find what they really want ‎30. What kind of music is now often adapted to influence customers in shops?‎ A. Classical music. B. Popular modern songs.‎ C. Folk songs. D. Jazz music.‎ ‎31. What is the best title of the passage?‎ A. Music makes happy Christmas B. Christmas “Muzak”‎ C. How to make Christmas music D. Christmas music makes us spend more D Why elephants rarely get cancer is a mystery that has confused scientists for decades. A study was led by researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah and Arizona State University, including researchers from the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation may have found the answer. According to the results, elephants have 38 additional modified copies of a gene (基因) that encodes p53, a well-defined tumor (肿瘤) suppressor, as compared to humans, who have only two. Further, elephants may have a more powerful mechanism for killing damaged cells that are at risk for becoming cancerous. In isolated elephant cells, this activity is doubled compared to healthy human cells, and five times that of cells from patients with Li-Fraumeni Syndrome, who have only one working copy of p53 and more than a 90 percent lifetime cancer risk in children and adults. The results suggest extra p53 could explain elephants’ increased resistance to cancer. ‎ ‎“Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer. It’s up to us to learn how different animals overcome the problem so we can adapt those strategies to prevent cancer in people,” says co-senior author Joshua Schiffman, M.D., pediatric oncologist (肿瘤学家) at Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah School of Medicine, and Primary Children’s Hospital. ‎ According to Schiffman, elephants have long been considered a walking problem. Because they have 100 times as many cells as people, they should be 100 times more likely to have a cell slip into a cancerous state and cause the disease over their long life span of 50 to 70 years. And yet it’s believed that elephants get cancer less often, a theory confirmed in this study. Analysis of a large database of elephant deaths estimates a cancer death rate of less than 5 percent compared to 11 to 25 percent in people. ‎ ‎32. Why do humans often get cancer compared to elephants according to the passage? ‎ A. Elephants are bigger than humans. ‎ B. Elephants have more p53 than humans. ‎ C. Elephants are not as clever as humans.‎ D. Elephants eat more than humans. ‎ ‎33. Which of the following is right according to the passage? ‎ A. Some damaged cells may be dangerous.‎ B. Some damaged cells are not dangerous. ‎ C. Some damaged cells can’t be cancerous.‎ D. Some damaged cells in elephants’ bodies are more dangerous than those in humans’ bodies. ‎ ‎34. What can we know from the last paragraph? ‎ A. Elephants have more cells than people. B. Elephants can get cancer easily. ‎ C. Elephants seldom die from cancer. D. Elephants often die from cancer. ‎ ‎35. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? ‎ A. Elephants help us B. Learn from Nature C. How to deal with cancer D. Opinions are divided on this issue.‎ ‎60% of the students think that it is wrong to do so because people will waste a lot of money observing these festivals. Besides, people are likely to forget their own tradition and culture if they focus too much on foreign festivals.‎ However, 35% of the students argue that it’s a natural trend to celebrate foreign festivals. As we all know, with the development of science and technology, the earth has, in fact, become a global village. Those festivals that were once foreign to us are now familiar to us. Meanwhile, celebrating foreign festivals can help us learn more about the customs of other countries.‎ As far as I’m concerned, if we can strike a balance between our own festivals and foreign ones, it’s not a bad idea to have more festivals to celebrate. ‎
