I know the old people have devoted themselves to our society. So it’s our duty to look after them well, through which we can get a good chance to understand our society and ourselves. The job can also help me know how to get on well with the old people. I’m a student of a senior high school. I am easy-going and I am careful with everything I do, especially looking after others. My friends all think highly of me for that. First of all, if I am employed, I’ll make efforts to build a happy and relaxing relation with them. Then I’ll pay more attention to their diet and physical exercise. What’s more, I know how to give first aid in case an emergency happens. I’m looking forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely, Li Hua Text 1 W: My neighbor is making a lot of noise. I can’t read at all. M: Why not go to the library? It will be much quieter there. Text 2 W: If I were you I’d take the bus to work. Driving in that rush hour traffic is terrible. M: But you know, by the time the bus gets to my stop, there aren’t any seats left. What’s more, I have to walk for 10 minutes just to get to the bus stop. Text 3 W: John, would you keep an eye on the baby while I am away? M: Sure. Will you be long? W: No, I just want to have a word with our neighbor. Text 4 M: Bread is one of the oldest and most popular kinds of food in the world. W: Believe it or not, I once saw some bread that is 5,000 years old.3 M: Did you? Where did you see that? W: In London, in the Egyptian section of the British Museum. Text 5 M: How much do these cakes cost? W: $5 each, but we are having a special sale today. If you buy two, you can get one free. M: Then I’ll take six. W: All right. Then you’ll get two free of charge. Text 6 W: Do you know what the weather is going to be like tomorrow? M: It’s supposed to be the same as today. I don’t think the weather will change much for the following week or so.[来源:学科网] W: That’s great. M: Why do you look so happy about this bad weather? W: You know, my uncle came to visit this Monday. He said he won’t go back home until the weather turns fine. I really enjoy having him here. He plays the piano very well, and he can even cook. What’s even better is that he’s teaching me how to paint and draw. Text 7 M: Excuse me. May I ask you some questions? W: Of course, sir. M: Do you know when the accident happened? W: Well, it was about 8:30 when I turned onto this street behind a black car. It was about 10 minutes later when I had to stop my car because of the accident. M: Did you see what caused it? W: When I was driving my car along, I saw a black dog crossing the road in front of the black car up ahead. A white car was driving fast towards the dog f rom the other direction. The two cars changed direction suddenly to avoid running over the dog and crashed into each other. M: And then? W: After that, I called the hospital immediately. About five minutes later an ambulance came. M: OK. Thank you. Text 8 M: Lisa, did you like singing when you were a little girl? W: Yes. I think that’s where I got my country music influences. M: When did you start performing? W: I joined the children’s theater program in Jackson Hole at the age of six. Since then I have sung for the Florida4 Panthers, Miami Marlins, and LA Dodgers. M: Did you ever want to be an actress? W: Yes. Actually, I’d love to star in a movie one day. Text 9 W: Why didn’t you come to my party last night? M: I’m sorry I couldn’t make it. I had to go to visit my friend in the hospital. W: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. Is your friend doing OK? M: The doctors said he would recover within a week. W: What happened to him? M: When we went hiking together the other day, he stepped in a hole and hurt his ankle. W: Oh, that’s too bad. I like going hiking too, but it can be dangerous at times. I remember last time we went hiking my husband hurt his back. It took months for him to recover. Do you go hiking often? M: Actually I seldom go hiking. I like staying indoors. My friend noticed I was putting on weight and suggested that I join him and some other friends to go hiking. W: Well, your friends are right. It’s not a good idea to spend all your time indoors. You should spend more time outside. M: What kind of outdoor activities do you usually do? W: Besides hiking, I also like going on picnics with my friends. M: Do you like swimming? W: That’s actually one of my least favorite things to do, but I do like going to the beach with my friends. I like lying in the sun on the beach. Text 10 The first seat belt is said to have been created in the 1800s by George Cayley of England. He is remembered for many inventions, especially for early flying machines. The United States first recognized the invention of a car seat belt in 1849. The government officially declared it to be an invention by Edward Junior of New York City. Edward called the device a Safety-Belt. But the seat belt which is widely used now wasn’t developed until more than one hundred years later. It resulted from the work of a Swedish engineer, Nils Bohlin. Bohlin was born in Sweden in 1920. After completing college, he designed seats for a Swedish company. In 1958 he joined Volvo as a safety engineer. Volvo was the first car maker to offer the modern seat belt as a necessary feature of its cars. The Swedish engineer died in Sweden in 2002.
