I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was jus t tall enough to see above the top of it as Mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, Mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she said again, “is for Elizabeth.”
I never saw her angry, never saw her cry, I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. It never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional”. But she lived “on the surface”. As years passed and I had my own family, I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way if she chose that she did forgive me. I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came. My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace—it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn't be sure the letter had even got to Mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.
Now the present of her desk told me, as s he'd never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside—a photo of my father and a one-page letter folded and refolded many times. She had given me an answer in a way she chose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words. 21. The writer began to love her mother's desk_________. A. after Mother died B. before she became a writer C. when she was a child D. when Mother gave it to her 22. The word “gulf” in the passage means________. A. deep understanding between the old and the young B. different ideas between the mother and the daughter C. free talks between mother and daughter D. part of the sea going far in land 23. What did Mother do with her daughter's letter asking for forgiveness? A. She had never received the letter. B. For years, she often talked about the letter. C. She didn't forgive her daughter at all in all her life. D. She read the letter again and again till she died. 24. What’s the best title of the passage? A. My Letter to Mother B. Mother and Children C. My Mother's Desk D. Talks between Mother and Me

Every week in China, millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete for the title Character Hero, which is a Chinesestyle spelling bee (拼写大赛). In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries.
Perhaps the show’s popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy (书法) to be one of their primary contributions. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet(字母). The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It’s possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them.
But there’s still hope for the paint brush. China’s Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write.
In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of sixyearolds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher’s examples before carefully trying to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper.＂If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?＂we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin.＂The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture,＂she reasons.＂Students must learn now so they don’t forget when they grow up.＂says the teacher.

A. It draws great public attention across the country.
B. It’s the mostviewed TV programs in China.
C. It means to spread Chinese culture to the world.
D. It’s open to people of all ages and all walks.
31. Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters?
A. Chinese people don’t refer to dictionaries very often.
B. Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practice calligraphy.
C. Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters.
D. Chinese people needn’t write by hand as often with the help of technology.
32. According to Shen Bin, being able to write characters by hand is ____________.
A. necessary for adults to survive in China

In a research carried out in the UK, it was found that only four out of every five employees were happy at work. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the pay or the love for the work that made people happy. Instead, friendly, supportive colleagues and a good manager have been found to be the primary causes of happiness at work. So how do you develop a sense of joy on the job? Here are some suggestions.
Happiness is a state of mind, so staying happy at work is completely based on a positive attitude towards your job. Focus on the bright side of the work rather than keep talking about what makes you unhappy.
Challenge yourself and take charge of your own growth in your career. Boredom is one of the primary factors that cause people to change jobs. Find new challenges and it’s a great feeling to take control over what you do and see a task through.
Having coworkers you like and enjoy working with is a feature of happiness in the w orkplace. Talk to people, get to know them and try to get along well with them in the workplace. Meeting new people and getting fresh views can help you to keep yourself interested in your work.
Complete your tasks, no matter how disagreeable or tough they might be. This gives you a sense of achievement and encourages you to work towards your goals in future.
Sitting and staring at your screen all day long isn’t going to help you. Instead, take breaks and go outside for some time. For example, go out for a few minutes to feel the breeze (微风). Eat your lunch outside or work for a few minutes during that hour, which helps you stay happy at work.
33. Which of the following is a main cause of happiness at work?
A. One’s love for the work. B. Having a good manager.
C. Having many supporters. D. The pay one gets from work.
34. Why does the author advise us to keep challenging ourselves at work?
A. To do our work more creatively.
B. To learn from new experiences.
C. To avoid feeling bored in the work place.
D. To prove that we have the ability to do the task.
35. The passage is written for___________.

Since the day of its birth, the United Nations has been the subject of much debate. 36 Others think that it is too weak. We can better understand this debate if we learn more about the U.N. and its history.
The U.N. was started for two reasons. First, when the idea was born, people all over the world were tired of war. They felt that there must be peaceful answers to the world’s problems. 37
The second reason was that modern science had developed new bombs and airplanes. 38 National borders were beginning to lose their meaning. Science would develop even more dangerous weapons in the future. Only an international organization would be able to control modern science.
Franklin D. Roosevelt, U.S. President at the time, believed that the Allies (联盟) should plan for peace before the war ended. On December 1, 1943, Roosevelt, Britain’s Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin from Soviet Union agreed to start an organization for world peace. 39
During the next year and a half, the idea of such an organization was debated around the world. Then came the big day. On April 11, 1945, the first international meeting of the United Nations took place in San Francisco. The goal of the meeting was to write the U.N. Charter (宪章). All of the fifty-one nations at the meeting had their own ideas to offer for the Charter. 40 Every nation present voted for the Charter. No one voted against it.
A. After a long debate, a final Charter was agreed upon.
B. The U.N. Charter is a beautiful piece of writing.
C. They asked all countries, large and small, to join the organization.
D. Even the smallest country on earth can have its voice heard.
E. They also felt that only an international organization could keep world peace.
F. These weapons made it almost impossible for a country to defend itself.
G. Some people attack the organization because they think it is too powerful.

I made friends with the natives, and their 52 amazed me. They gave me presents of their favorite artworks which they had 53 to sell to tourists . I studied the delightful forms of the cactus . I watched for the desert sunsets, and 54 for seashells that had been left there millions of years ago when the desert had been an ocean 55 [来源:Zxxk.Com]
