At this shabby old building?” Then I was told that the Sanhe Tile Kiln (三和瓦窑) was a treasure in Taiwan. Seriously? My heart sank as we walked toward what appeared to be mounts of dirt. The place looked like no treasure I’d ever seen.‎ My disappointment soon melted into anticipation as we walked into the Sanhe Tile Kiln. I soon realized that this wasn’t just any old building. This place, hidden in the heart of Kaohsiung, revolutionized the production of bricks in Taiwan. The piles I had mistaken for dirt were actually clay: a key ingredient in bricks.‎ Long ago, many buildings around Taiwan were made from bricks sourced from Fujian Province. But this all changed when hundreds of brick kilns popped up all over the island. Of all the kilns that once operated, the Sanhe Tile Kiln is the last one standing. It has been in operation for over 100 years. Considered a treasure, the factory is part of the cultural heritage of the island. ‎ At the Sanhe Tile Kiln, making quality bricks is serious business. Fortunately, Kaohsiung has exceptional clay and water, which are essential. Workers dig clay out of the ground and put it through a machine to break it up. Water is then added, and the mixture is put into another machine to form clay blocks. When the blocks are the desired shape, they are set aside to dry. Then the bricks are piled in the kiln.‎ Next, workers start a fire with straw and slowly raise the kiln’s temperature until it reaches ‎ ‎1000 degrees Celsius. Throughout this process, the temperature must rise steadily or else the bricks will fall into ruins.‎ Most of the bricks produced here are used to repair historical buildings. However, the Sanhe Tile Kiln will custom-design art pieces to meet your needs.‎ Making bricks is a long process, taking three to four months. It requires a lot of hard work, patience and devotion. But in the end, it’s worth it. I left the Sanhe Tile Kiln with a greater appreciation for the art of brick making.‎ ‎24. What mainly makes the Sanhe Tile Kiln cultural heritage of Taiwan?‎ A. Being located in the heart of Kaohsiung.‎ B. Being the only standing brick-making kiln.‎ C. Being helpful for repairing historical buildings.‎ D. Revolutionizing the production of bricks in Taiwan.‎ ‎25. How did the author’s feelings change in the visit?‎ A. serious → bored → amazed ‎ B. depressed → patient → grateful ‎ C. curious → doubtful →impressed D. disappointed → expectant → appreciative ‎26. Which statements support the point — “It requires a lot of hard work, patience and devotion.”?‎ ① Customized bricks can be ordered from the Kiln.‎ ② The bricks cannot be piled in the kiln until they’re dry.‎ ③ A breakdown may occur if the temperature rises rapidly.‎ ④ Exceptional clay and water are essential for making quality bricks.‎ A. ① ③ B. ② ③ ④ C. ② ③ D. ② ④ ‎ ‎27. What’s the organization pattern for this passage?‎ A. Problem and solution. B. Cause and effect. ‎ C. Description and opinion. D. Question and answer.‎ C The University of Miami’s newest hospital has a six-bed emergency room, operating room, intensive care unit, a birthing suite and outpatient clinics. The only thing missing is patients. Instead, nursing students get a realistic clinical experience using computerized mannequins (fake patients) and staff actors.‎ ‎“Practicing on real people can be a bit frightening environment, and as our patients become more knowledgeable, they tend to hesitate when a student walks in,” said Susana Barroso-Fernandez, who oversees UM’s simulation (模拟) program. “We created this environment to allow students to practice and make mistakes and never put a patient or student at risk.”‎ This hospital is part of a growing trend of colleges building simulation centers to provide real-life experiences to students. The move toward simulation has increased as nursing programs have grown faster than hospitals’ capacity to accommodate these students.‎ A 2014 study found that colleges could substitute simulation for up to half of all clinical experience without any negative results. The students scored just as well on nursing license exams as ‎ those getting most of their experience in hospitals and healthcare centers.‎ There are major benefits to simulation, officials said. In addition to giving students a safe environment to practice, it also gives students experience with rare situations, but still crucial for them to know how to handle. ‎ The Simulation Hospital will also be used as a training venue for people outside of UM, including hurricane training. “It’s not just about nursing education,” said Susan. ‎ ‎28. What best proves UM’s simulation program worked?‎ A. Students performed as well. B. It offered students all clinical experience.‎ C. Nursing programs have grown faster. D. The hospital will be used as a training venue.‎ ‎29. What does “a growing trend” in Paragraph 3 refer to?‎ A. Launching nursing programs. B. Building more healthcare centers.‎ C. Improving hospitals’ capacity. D. Colleges building simulation centers.‎ ‎30. What’s the function of Paragraph 4 for the whole passage?‎ A. To make the point more persuasive. B. To make the description more vivid.‎ C. To make the program more appealing. D. To make the topic more interesting.‎ ‎31. What might be the best title for the passage?‎ A. More Experience, Less Risk B. Safer Environment, More Patients C. More Practice, Fewer Mistakes D. Newest Hospital, Best Accommodation D Peter Ripken loves literature and reads books by writers all over the world. He learned years ago that not all nations permit writers to express themselves freely. In fact, free expression can be quite dangerous in many places.‎ So, Ripken decided to act. He helped establish an organization, The International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN), to protect writers. Its founders sought to persuade cities, not central governments, to give refuge to persecuted(受迫害的) writers. He was involved right from the beginning, from the mid-1990s, to set up this program.‎ Originally, he had a different view of his future as a young man. He thought to become a bookseller because of his reading obsession when he was 15. A bookseller he did not become. Instead, in the late 1960s, Ripken was a manager for five years in an aid organization working in Africa. But his love for the written word remained strong. He then worked for three years as a deputy editor for the Africa section at the Voice of Germany. Despite his love for the job, when asked to join an organization promoting African, Asian and Latin American literature, Ripken didn’t hesitate. He had fun traveling to literature conferences and doing workshops with publishers and authors. That’s why he did the job for 20 years.‎ Ripken grew up reading German authors. But his interest broadened to other European and American literature. Then, he found what he called books "outside the norm." This helped grow his interest in political developments in other regions.‎ Last year Ripken retired after several years as ICORN's chairman. But he is still active in the organization. His goal is to increase the group's capacity to protect and promote writers and artists at risk around the world. He said he hopes to be remembered as somebody who has promoted creativity and supported literature as a political tool and source of enjoyment.‎ ‎32. What’s the role of Peter in the development of ICORN?‎ A. A monitor. B. A co-founder. C. A consultant. D. A sponsor.‎ ‎33. What might Peter work as in 1972?‎ A. A bookseller. B. A manager. C. A deputy editor. D. A staff in ICORN.‎ ‎34. What contributes to Peter’s active involvement in ICORN?‎ A. He grew up reading Germany authors. ‎ B. He loves travelling and meeting people. ‎ C. He’s obsessed with literature all over the world.‎ D. He concerns political development via literature.‎ ‎35. What might be talked about in the paragraph following the passage?‎ A. Why politics influences literature. ‎ B. Why literature itself is a pleasure.‎ C. How ICORN has become so international.‎ D. How people read “outside the norm” in literature.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) ‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 ‎ According to a common saying, "Honesty is the best policy." 36 . Lying often seems like a good way to impress people or avoid blame for mistakes. Some people lie out of habit, without even realizing they're doing it. But despite all this, honesty really is worth the effort.‎ One obvious reason for honesty is that lies are difficult to maintain. There's always a chance that the person you lied to will find out the truth. 37 . ‎ Lies are also difficult to hide because they are harder to remember than the truth. If you make up a story, you have to remember all the details. 38 . But if you commit to telling the truth, you will never have trouble remembering. This saves you effort and makes conversations less stressful for you.‎ Another obvious reason to avoid lying is that lying can harm others. People who believe your lies might make bad decisions because of them. And a lie about someone else could destroy that person's reputation. On a personal level, if your friends find out you lied to them, their feeling will be hurt. They will question whether they can trust you or wonder whether you care about them. In contrast, if you always tell the truth, you will develop a reputation for honesty. 39 . Business deals, friendships, family and romantic relationships all depend on trust.‎ ‎ 40 . Sometimes it's best to remain silent if your words might hurt someone else. Honesty means that when you speak, you tell the truth without holding any information back. When you do that, you will feel more relaxed and enjoy stronger relationships.‎ A. But in daily life, honesty can be difficult.‎ B. This will help you in every area of your life.‎ C. Is the gain from lying really worth the risk?‎ D. Being honest is a basic principle for us to deal with others.‎ E. We will get others' respect and appreciation if telling the truth. ‎ F. And the more lies you tell, the more stories you have to remember.‎ G. Honesty, however, doesn't mean you have to say everything in your mind.‎ 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ ‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。‎ While checking out at the grocery store I noticed a woman behind me. Are you working now?‎ W: Yes, at the Palace restaurant on Prince Street.‎ M: That’s a very nice restaurant. Why do you want to leave?‎ W: Because I can’t work full-time at the moment. I’m taking some courses at university and need more time for study.‎ M: I see. What days are you available?‎ W: I’m free all day Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday.‎ M: I’m afraid that’s not what we want. We’re looking for someone who can help us late in the week when we get very busy. That’s Thursday afternoon, Friday afternoon and evening as well as all day Saturday. The restaurant is closed on Sunday.‎ W: Oh, What a pity!‎ Text 10‎ Carole is a teenage girl. She thinks she is a bit too big. But she doesn’t know how she became that way.‎ Carole has made up her mind to follow other’s example and planned to lose weight as well. Sometimes she feels so unhappy without knowing why. At these times, she often goes out to restaurants, bars and cafeterias for food. Although she feels very full in her stomach, she can’t stop eating because of the enjoyment she gets. She is a little worried about her behavior and thinks that she might have an unknown disease, or an unhealthy mind. With these questions, Carole went to see a doctor.‎ The doctor doesn’t think she has a disease, but suggests that she need self-control. Since Carole ‎ said she enjoys eating although she feels very full, the doctor thinks her feeling of unhappiness could come from something deeper, such as problems with family members or friends. The doctor said Carole needs to find something that can bring fun to her life. Perhaps she should give up the habit of eating too much, and do something else instead, such as talking to someone over the phone, playing with friends or drinking more tea. These methods could help Carole change the habit of eating too much and become healthy again.‎
