Plus, 35% of them dropped into the “normal” category(范畴). This week, Dr Alan Duckworth will tell you how these people reduce their blood pressure to a level similar to what’s achieved with hypertension drugs.

Students should be able to show what they know. Many folks take this as a self-evident truth. But I think it demands closer examination.
Possessing a skill or piece of knowledge is not the same thing as being able to show it. This is why many smart young people hate school. Understanding, figuring out, and getting a handle on a piece of knowledge is really exciting, but having to prove to somebody else that you understand is a big fat pain in the neck.
Finding proof of student learning is a huge part of the teacher’s job, and whether it is done poorly or not makes all the difference in that teacher’s effectiveness. There is a huge difference between “How do I figure out if this student understands” and “How do I make this student prove to me he gets it.” The first is a valuable approach; the second is the first step on the road toward wasting everybody’s time.
And there’s the problem. If we start with the assumption (假定) that a student who knows must be able to show his knowledge to our satisfaction, we will be traveling down the wrong road. The more we demand that students prove to us that they know the stuff, the more we will design artificial tasks that demand a set of skills and knowledge entirely different from the skills and knowledge we really want to measure.
As a classroom teacher, I have to remember that the burden is on me to find a way to see what my students know; the burden is not on them to put on whatever trained monkey show I design for my own ease and convenience.
It may not be the worst thing ever to say “Students should be able to show what they know.” But I think it’s far more useful to say, "Teachers should be able to discover what students know."

When we winded our way through the first major rapid with rocks perilously close on either side, I thought it was time to get to know the captain whose boat we had hired.
Xiang Kaen Chan greeted me in a friendly fashion but didn’t look up when I entered his cabin. In fact, he rarely took his eyes from the water during our conversation. He explained that on a stretch
of river, where there are no navigational aids or markers and where the channels can change after heavy rain, “The most important thing is to watch the water and know how to avoid the submerged( under the surface of the sea, etc.), rocks and sandbars(sandbank at the mouth of a river or harbour). You must read this river all the time.”
I tried to look for the churnings (搅拌) and dips in the water that indicated an obstacle just below the surface. Yet he headed for parts of the river I would have avoided, and avoided parts I would have chosen. It seemed like terribly difficult detective work. Still Xiang had a lot of experience on this part of the Mekong. He began his apprenticeship(学徒) thirty-nine years ago. When he was seventeen, he used to help load and unload cargo(goods), look after the engine and help the captain. Gradually, he got to know the river. He became a captain 1962.
“I’ve only had two accidents,” he said. “The first was in 1975 when I hit a sandbar. But we were able to push the boat off without damage or loss. The second was more serious. I hit a rock. We lost the boat but managed to get the passengers and the engine off.”
Salvaging as much as you can is very important when you don’t have insurance. Replacing a river boat like his would be expensive-about ＄38,000 including the Japanese engine. Accidents are common. We saw several wrecks(ship that has been destroyed or badly damaged, esp. in a storm) on our journey to Luang Prabang.
“To avoid disaster”, Xiang said, “a river captain needed spiritual guidance as well as human skill.”A framed colour photograph of a Buddhist（佛）monk in saffron（藏红色）robes(长袍) was pinned to one wall of the cabin “this monk is a wise and holy man,” he said. “I have visited him three times in his temple in Burma. Now I think he helps to guide me on the right course.” On the other wall was small altar (table or raised flat-topped platform on which offerings are made to a god) with joss-sticks (thin stick that burns slowly and produces a pleasant smell, used esp. in religious ceremonies), balls of sticky rice, and a number of holy objects. “These are offerings to the spirit of the boat and the spirit of the river,” Xiang said, “They, too, have helped me to escape a fatal accident.”
