It felt like someone was stabbing (刺) me in the chest with a knife over and over again. After three months of rest I went back to college, but then things took a turn for the worse. I was staying at my Nana’s house and woke up in the middle of the night with a terrible pain in my chest. I knew I was having a heart attack again. I couldn’t even shout for help. Luckily, my grandpa was going to the toilet and heard me falling out of bed. If it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn’t be here. The two holes in my heart were causing the problems and I needed an operation immediately to repair them. Unfortunately, the surgery didn’t go well and it only managed to repair one of the holes. When I woke up from the operation, I had a really dry mouth and couldn’t wait to have something to eat and drink. The biggest shock of all came when I was told that I needed a heart transplant (移植) and was put on the register. The doctors were stunned at how quickly heart failure came on – it usually takes years, but it took my heart less than six months to get to that stage. My whole world came crashing down, but I stayed strong. It was a choice between crying every day and getting on with my life. As time went on, life became even harder. I hated feeling weak all the time and needing help with everything. It got to the point where I thought I would never get a new heart. I was diagnosed with depression (抑郁症). Even though I thought that Christmas 2008 would be my last, I really enjoyed it and even had a good New Year. Everyone was crying for me when the clock struck midnight and they told me to keep fighting. A week later, I got a call from the doctors saying they’d found a suitable donor (捐赠 人). My wish came true and thankfully the operation went well. I spent four hours in surgery where they took out my old heart and put a new one in. When I woke up I burst out crying. I had a second chance at life. 59. What happened when the author was having his second heart attack? A. He narrowly escaped death thanks to his grandfather. B. He realized what it was and shouted for help in time. C. He felt less pain than he had during the previous one. D. He decided to have an operation to repair the two holes in his heart. 60. When the author learned that he needed a heart transplant, he ______. A. couldn’t help crying every day B. was so anxious that his heart failure developed very quickly C. felt so depressed that he tried to kill himself D. chose to continue to fight for his life 61. At the beginning of 2009, the author ______. A. was convinced that the past Christmas had been his lastB. received a heart transplant but the operation didn’t go well C. felt blessed and grateful for his second chance at life D. felt hopeless all the time and was diagnosed with depression 62. Which one would be the best title for the text? A. Choices matter B. Rebuilding my world C. The most special Christmas D. Waiting for a new heart C What was life like in Whitby back when the town was not a tourist attraction but a working fishing port? First and foremost, it was community life. You were part of group that knew and cared about you, as you did about your neighbors. People tended to live in one house for the whole of their life, often continuing with a married son or daughter taking on the household responsibilities and caring for their ageing parents. There was a friendliness and a sharing of one’s joys and troubles with other people. Loneliness was hardly possible. A widowed (寡居的) man might find his washing quietly done for him, or maybe some kind of baking left on his doorstep. A newly confined (分娩的) mother would have few worries about the care of her other children as they would be left with a neighbor. And in due course she would repay the kindness with a similar service. Perhaps the hardest part was the water supply. In the old days there was a pump in a near yard. Much later, piped water was led to a shared tap in each yard where one filled the daily buckets. It was often their children’s job to get the water in before going to school. In Whitby, middle-class people lived alongside those who were very poor indeed. But despite the extreme poverty, Whitby people were very good at making the best of things and did not air their poverty publicly. Respectability was important and most people tried to keep some “Sunday best” clothes. Romantic as the artists may have found it, Whitby undoubtedly had its problems. Access to the upper floors was often by way of wooden steps and galleries outside. Roofs leaked (漏水), floors rotted, plaster (石膏) fell off. People would joke about how well their houses were ventilated (通风的). Perhaps the state of the upkeep (维修) of the houses left much to be desired, but that was the landlord’s responsibility, not the people who actually lived in them. But for their part they did their best, cleaning the floor every week. Not only that, they also cleaned the yard steps from top to bottom. 63. What did life in Whitby’s community use to be like? A. People moved out to live elsewhere when they got married. B. A widowed man would find it hard to manage his life. C. People lived in harmony with their neighbors. D. Children were usually brought up by their grandparents. 64. What can we conclude from the text about people from Whitby? A. They cared about their public image, even if they were poor. B. The middle class and the poor were often in conflict. C. They showed respect for each other though they were poor. D. They felt quite comfortable about their poverty. 65. What was the main problem that most of the people of Whitby had? A. They found it hard to get water from a pump. B. They lived in very poor conditions. C. They didn’t know how to keep their houses ventilated. D. They were not active enough to improve their living conditions. 66. According to the text, the people of Whitby were ______ in the old days. A. romantic and artistic B. cautious and intelligent C. friendly and open-minded D. caring and optimistic D Sea turtles are one of several species that have temperature-dependent sex determination. The number of female babies increases when nests are made in warmer sands. A recent study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, California State University and Worldwide Fund for Nature Australia examined two genetically distinct populations of green sea turtles living in the Great Barrier Reef. The study found that a group of about 200,000 turtles living in the northern part of the reef was almost entirely female. While the southern population was 65 to 69 percent female, females in the northern group accounted for 99.1 percent of young turtles and 86.8 percent of adults. After combining their results with temperature data, the scientists in charge of the study found that the northern green turtles have been producing mainly females for more than two decades and that the complete feminization of this population is possible in the near future. The temperature at which the turtles will produce male or female babies can be passed on to the turtles’ children. Most sea turtle populations are now producing offspring above the most suitable temperature, making it clear that climate change poses a serious threat to the survival of these populations. The chief executive of World Wildlife Fund Australia, Dermot O’Gorman, said this is another sign of the impact of climate change, following recent research that shows that coral bleaching (珊瑚白化) events are occurring far more frequently than in the past. “We’ve had two years where we’ve had mass bleaching events on the Great Barrier Reef,” he told Guardian Australia. “That’s a very visible sign of the impact of climate change. But this is a quiet change. We can’t see the impact it’s having on a turtle population until a study like this shows some long-term trends.” The lead author of the paper, Dr Michael Jensen, said the findings represent a major environmental conservation issue. O’Gorman said more urgent action on climate change is clearly needed, adding that some conservationists have already taken practical measures, such as using shade cloth on turtle nesting beaches to lower the sand temperature, and reducing bycatch in the fishing industry.“Shade cloth can be used in certain places, but there’s a limit to the scale you can do that,” he said. “Now every large male who can reproduce is going to be even more important.” 67. According to the research on Great Barrier Reef’s green sea turtles, ______. A. about 65 to 69 percent of northern turtles are female B. 86.8 percent of southern turtles have grown up to adults C. the feminization of green sea turtles could become worse D. adult green sea turtles can change their sex in warmer places 68. Why did O’Gorman mention coral bleaching? A. To emphasize that climate change poses more risks to coral than turtles. B. To compare the living environments of turtles and coral. C. To urge people to take practical measures to fight climate change. D. To stress this discovery about green sea turtles is very valuable. 69. Conservationists are taking action to ______. A. keep the sea turtles’ nests cool B. stop the illegal fishing of green sea turtles C. expand the size of the green sea turtles’ nesting places D. establish places for turtles to produce offspring 70. Which would be the best title for the article? A. How climate change affects ocean creatures. B. Invisible change caused by global warming exposed. C. Necessity of protecting green sea turtles and their habitat. D. Global green sea turtle populations in greater danger. On an average day most of us check our smartphones 47 times, and this habit clouds our judgment on what information to select and store, which might explain why it’s time we should do things about the information we take in to form memories. As simple as it sounds, the repetition of tasks-reading, or saying words over and over — continues to be the best method for transforming short-term memories into long-term ones. To do that, we have to retrain our minds to focus on one task at a time. Sadly, most turn a blind eye to this formula because we believe we’re productive. New connections are made in your brain when you learn, so to remember what you learn, do what you probably did in your youth: Repeat words, thoughts and ideas over and over until you get them right. Also, spaced repetition might be the best way. Quickly pushing facts into our brains leads us to forget them in the long term. When you review knowledge and practice it often, it sticks, a research has shown. So if you can include what you’re trying to remember into daily life, ideally over time, your chances of keeping it significantly improve. But once you stop reviewing that knowledge, the retention (保留) drops greatly. To get past it, space out your repetition over a few days and test the effect yourself. But be careful: find a healthy interval that works. This is a good way to effectively start tackling a new language. Sometimes, memory and focus usually go hand-in-hand. Dr. Cowan suggests rearranging our office setup as one way to improve focus. “The rebirth of the open workplace cannot be helping stay on task, ” Dr. Cowan said. Referring to work spaces without desks, physical barriers and privacy, but with a lot of playthings. Multiple studies have found that procrastination (拖延) leads to stress and completely kills focus. Stop engaging in useless tasks like surfing the web and just handle whatever it is you need to work on. Then watch your focus increase quickly and your memory improve. Memory is very cue (提示) dependent, “Mr. Schacter, a psychologist, said, referring to”. Something he calls absent-minded memory failure. “Most say it could never happen to me, but it’s a very long list of responsible people that it has happened to. When you don’t have that cue, you can forget almost everything.” A simple way around that is to set reminders. Even better, combine a few of these techniques: Write your reminder on a post-it and put it on your desk so you’re forced to repeatedly look at it over a long period, including the practice of spaced repetition.Simple Ways to Be Better at Remembering Current situation The use of smartphones makes it difficult to process the information, so we should do something to help ___71___it. Repeat the tasks until you ___73___the information you got in mind. It’s sad that the majority ___74___the repetition because we assume we’re productive. Put what you want to remember into daily life and you will remember them ____75____. Go over and practice what you’ve learned at ____76____ Be sure not to ___77___doing things necessary to handle. Give special ___78___to what you need to focus on rather than deal with other things. Ways of ___72___our memories Absent-minded failure may affect almost anything if you’re not ___79___of it.
