Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways , and at different times on the calendar. In Western countries, people usually celebrate the New Year at midnight on January 1st. But some cultures prefer to celebrate the New Year by waking up early to watch the sunrise. They welcome the New Year with the first light of the sunrise. It is also a common Western custom to make a New Year's promise called a resolution. New Year's resolutions usually include promises to try something new or change a bad habit in the New Year. Many cultures also do special things to get rid of bad luck at the beginning of a new year. For example, in Ecuador, families make a big doll from old clothes. The doll is filled with old newspapers and firecrackers. At midnight, these dolls are burned to show the bad things from the past year are gone and the New Year can start afresh. Other New Year traditions are followed to bring good luck in the New Year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck in the New Year .In the United States, some people eat black-eyed peas(豇豆)for good luck-but to get good--- luck for a whole year you have to eat 365 of them! 1.What does the underlined word “resolution" in Paragraph3 mean? BLike many, I felt pressure from my parents and teachers to go to university and study something academic. With top grades I received at the end of high school, I was almost able to enter any course of my pick. Yet the thought of spending the next few years facing the four walls of a classroom caused a lump (肿块) in my throat. After a year majoring in photography at university, which was not just what I expected, I made the decision to take a break and go on a gap year. In fact, I gained more knowledge in the real world in four months than I did from my entire schooling, but most importantly, I learnt so much about myself. One day, my posted photos were noticed by Topdeck Travel, and they asked if they could use some of my travel pictures for their posters. This really was the beginning of my career. I began developing my relationship with Topdeck Travel, and before long, I got my first pay travel overseas to take photographs. Soon I reached the point where I had to make a decision— either to play it safe, go back to university and settle down like everyone else, or to follow my heart and go my own way— a path with an uncertain future. I chose the latter, and it was the scariest and best decision I have ever made. Five years after leaving school, I might not have a university degree, a well-paid job, a husband or a house with a white fence. Instead, I’m sitting at my office, with a cafe by a beach at Goa, India. As I stare past my laptop screen at the sun setting beyond the waves, a salty breeze touches my face. To me, success is about pursuing my dreams and creating my own path instead of trying to follow someone else’s. Somehow, I feel like my life is exactly where it is meant to be. 4. What did the author think of going to university? A. She took it seriously. B. She showed little interest. C. She looked forward to it. D. She thought it was a must. 5. What benefit did the author gain from her gap year? A. The knowledge about the real world. B. Her paid overseas travel experience. C. Realizing what she really wanted in her life. D. Knowing what really mattered at university. 6. What can we infer about the author from the passage? A. She regrets not going back to university. B. She gets less knowledge in the real world. C. She feels quite satisfied with her present life. D. She misses the days working for Topdeck Travel. C Dieting to lose weight has become very popular in recent years. People have become more health conscious and try to take better care of their bodies by eating more healthily and exercising more regularly to lose any unnecessary fat that they may have. Not only are people being more careful about what they eat, they are also concerned with how they eat and how their meals are prepared. People are taking more time for each meal. Many avoid the so-called “plastic” fast-food hamburgers and choose to eat a salad or a sandwich of more healthful ingredients in a quiet restaurant with a more comfortable atmosphere. At home, they also try to take enough time to eat a relaxed dinner without phone or TV interruptions. While dieting may be viewed as beneficial, it has also become a serious problem for Americans, particularly for young women. Dieting for them has actually become a psychological (心理的) addiction. They eat so little that they can lose as much as fifty percent of their total body weight, and although they look like skeletons, they still insist that they are fat. The current wave of exercising, dieting and the problems produced have caused many organizations to begin educating the public. Many schools, hospitals, health organizations, newspapers and magazines, for example, are offering classes, printing articles and so on to inform the public of the way to exercise and diet, of the dangers of dieting too rapidly, and of the places people can go for medical help if they find themselves on the road to “diet addiction”. 7. These days people are dieting more because________. A. they are getting fatter and fatter B. they realize the danger of junk food C. they grow aware of health D. they eat more healthily 8. Which way of eating is strongly advised in the passage? A. Enjoying food with phones on. B. Finishing dinner in a short time. C. Avoiding a salad or a sandwich. D. Eating in a relaxed atmosphere. 9. If you are getting into “diet addiction”, what should you do? A. See a doctor. B. Keep dieting. C. Take exercise. D. Attend classes. 10. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. What organizations are offering medical service. B. Where people with dieting addiction can go for help. C. How people are helped to solve dieting problems. D. What causes the organizations to educate the public 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多 余选项。 Avoid Internet Addiction 11 Many people suffer from addiction to the Internet and have a hard time paying attention to the important things around them. While I was standing in line at the cash register (收银台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas. I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way to the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card. I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holiday meaningful. Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In the late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery (电池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership— a shop selling cars— was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom. 注意: 1. 所续写短文的词数应为 150 左右; 2. 应使用 5 个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语; 3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好; 4. 续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。 Paragraph 1: I entered the shop, and one of the salesmen came to me. ____________________________ Paragraph 2: After a while, my car was repaired by them. First, I'd like to tell you something about the festival, which is celebrated on the 15th day of first month of Chinese lunar calendar. It is one of the biggest holidays in China. Several days before it, people begin to make lanterns, which are made in the shape of different animals, vegetables, fruits and many other things. Meanwhile, people usually write riddles on them. On the eve of it, all the lanterns are hung up. People appreciate them and guess the riddles. Why not come and enjoy the festival? Looking forward to your coming. Yours, Li Hua 第 二 节 读 后 续 写 ( 满 分 25 分 ) One possible version: I entered the shop, and one of the salesmen came to me. What surprised me most was that the salesman was the husband from the older couple who had ever helped me years ago. Never had I met them since we had met last time, which made me really sorry. Fortunately, I came across them and knew the shop was run by them. I was in trouble again and needed them to give me a hand once again. I told them what was wrong with my car. After a while, my car was repaired by them. They solved my trouble once again, but when I tried to pay for it, they would not accept my money. They told me that when they ran the shop at first, no one had ever taken time to write to them and say “Thank you”, but now they received an increasing number of thank-you notes from people, which they were really happy about.
