I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the
Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio didn't want me for the film—it
wanted somebody as well-known as Paul—he stood for me. I don't know how many people would
have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers.
The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later
had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of
theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft (技艺) and focused on digging into the characters
we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues(美德) that are typical of American
actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other—but always with an underlying
affection. Those were also at the core (核心) of our relationship off the screen.
We shared the belief that if you're fortunate enough to have success, you should put something
back—he with his Newman's Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously
ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn't see each other all that

How do you measure a chicken's happiness? Is it in the way it runs for food? Or by how much
time it spends cleaning itself ? To find the answers to these questions, researchers in Canada are
putting 16 kinds of chickens through a series of physical and mental tests.
They're watching how well the birds can climb over a barrier for food, how nervous they appear
to be and whether they play with a fake worm. Chickens can't say how they feel, but researchers
believe that playing with the worm might be a sign of happiness.
Stephanie Torrey is one of the researchers. Torrey said the animal welfare world wants to do
more than just reduce suffering. Now, researchers aim to learn if and how animals can really enjoy
their lives.
Supporters of animal welfare say today's chickens are unusually huge and in great pain. They say the
industry needs to change breeds（品种）. Many in the chicken industry say there is no problem.
They say that broiler chickens(肉食鸡), the most commonly used bird, may not move around a lot
because they don't have a lot of energy. Even if the industry agreed to change breeds, it's unclear
what the new birds should look like.
John Glisson of the US Poultry and Egg Association says broiler chickens are especially inactive
by nature. Some people may mistake the birds' inactivity for a medical problem. The industry says
changing chicken breeds is unnecessary, and that changing to broiler chickens that don't grow as big
or as fast would mean using up more water and other resources. Chicken prices at food stores would
be higher, too.
"It's crazy for anyone to have to remind the industry that birds naturally walk, "said Josh Balk,
the Humane Society's vice president of farm animal protection. He said the study in Canada will
provide important information what breeds of chickens might suffer less.

Nobody needs reminding that exercise is good for our health, but we may need reminding that it
needs to be done in the right way.
Light exercises are a great way to improve circulation and keep our muscles active, especially if the rest of the day will be spent sitting in front of a computer or in a lecture hall. However, certain
sports like long distance running require training to build up our bodies so they can handle the
challenge. If we go into such sport cold, it can shock our muscles, hearts, lungs and other organs and
cause severe pain or in some cases, even death.
Some people are born with medical conditions that go unnoticed until they stress the unstable
part of their body. A weak heart may never be seen until we do something that causes extreme
physical effort. Recently there have been cases of people dying while running long distances. Also, a
university student died after taking a 1,000m running exam. Some universities and high schools have

Maybe education about such events is lacking, especially during primary and high school. People
participating in such competitions should realize that a reasonable amount of training is required

forced to participate in events that push them past their limits, especially if they haven't warmed-up
completely. Cancelling events could lead to people becoming less healthy and overweight. Maybe
these events shouldn't be cancelled, but organizers and participants should be more careful about
regular health checks.
