She hopes to use the language at next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo. Takamizawa was one of the more than 200, 00 people who requested to volunteer for Tokyo ’ s 2020 Games. English is not required for service, but it is a useful skill for volunteers to have. But Takamizawa had not been able to learn the language when she was young. Takamizawa said that she was in high school when World War Two started. She said, “In my second year there, English was banned because it was the enemy language.” Takamizawa said her grandchildren helped persuade her that she was not too old to learn. “When I talked to my grandchildren about my wish, they said, ‘It’s not too late. We will teach you one word a day’”. Natsuko is Takamizawa’s granddaughter and main English teacher. Natsuko sends a new English word to her grandmother’s phone every day. They also often work together directly on phrases that Takamizawa will need for the Olympics. “Welcome to Tokyo, this is the Olympic stadium, how can I help you?” Takamizawa answers when asked to say an English phrase she has learned. Natsuko explains that she wanted to give her grandmother something to enjoy. “I can clearly see her English is getting better. It’s my joy now.” The EF English Proficiency Index is a measure of the level of English spoken in a country. Japan ranks 49th among countries where English is not the first language. This situation is slowly changing as younger generations welcome English. However, Takamizawa believes real change will not happen unless Japanese people become more open to the rest of the world. Sharing bread or other foods is a common human tradition that can promote unity and trust. Food can also have a special meaning, and play an important role in a family or culture's celebrations or traditions. The foods we eat—and when and how we eat them—are often unique to a particular culture or may even differ between rural (郊区的) and urban (市区的) areas within one country. Sharing bread, whether during a special occasion (时刻) or at the family dinner table, is a common symbol of togetherness. Many cultures also celebrate birthdays and marriages with cakes that are cut and shared among the guests. Early forms of cake were simply a kind of bread, so this tradition has its roots in the custom of sharing bread. Food also plays an important role in many New Year celebrations. In the southern United States, pieces of corn bread stand for blocks of gold for prosperity (兴旺) in the New Year. In Greece, people share a special cake called vasilopita. A coin is put into the cake, which signifies (预示) success in the New Year for the person who receives it. Many cultures have ceremonies to celebrate the birth of a child, and food can play a significant role. In China, when a baby is one month old, families name and welcome their child in a celebration that includes giving red-colored eggs to guests. In many cultures, round foods such as grapes, bread, and moon cakes are eaten at welcome celebrations to represent family unity. Nutrition (营养) is necessary for life, so it is not surprising that food is such an important part of different cultures around the world. 8. According to the passage, sharing food ____. A.indicates a lack of food B.has its roots in birthday celebration C.is a custom unique to rural areas D.can help to develop unity and trust 9.What does the coin in vasilopita signify for its receiver in the New Year? A.Success. B.Trust. C.Health. D.Togetherness. 10.The author explains the role of food in celebrations by ____. A.making comparisons B.analyzing causes C.using examples D.describing processes 11.What is the passage mainly about? A.The custom of sharing food. B.The importance of food in different cultures. C.The specific meaning of food. D.The role of food in ceremonies.D ROCK-PAPER-SCISSORS is a game played all around the world. As kids, we have relied on it to settle disagreements with friends – from which channel to watch to who gets to eat the last ice cream – all because we think the results are completely random. But are they? Wang Zhijian, PhD, a professor at Zhejiang University, believes that there is a regulation behind this simple game. So, he gathered 360 students, divided them into groups of six and had each group play 300 rounds of rock-paper-scissors, reported USA Today. After the first results, Wang thought he was wrong, because players chose each of the three moves about one-third of the time, suggesting that the game is random after all. However, Wang later noticed a surprising regulation of behavior in the data. When players won a round, they usually stuck to the same choice. But when they lost, they tended to change to a more powerful move. For example, if Player A had just thrown down scissors to beat Player B’s paper, Player A was more likely to throw down scissors again while Player B was likely to choose rock, since rock beats scissors. According to Wang, this might be a function that is called “conditional response”. So, for the next step of his study, as he told BBC, Wang plans to do some research about how human brains make quick decisions when competing. Now that you’ve learned how to predict the moves of your opponent (对手), you’ll have an advantage next time you play rock-paper-scissors with your friends. But there is one problem: make sure they haven’t read about Wang’s study, or your advantage will disappear. 12. The underlined word “random” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to _________. A. equal B. amusing C. strange D. unpredictable 13. Which of the following is TRUE about Wang Zhijian and his study? A. He found the game is random. B. He asked 360 students to play a total of 300 rounds of rock-paper-scissors. C. By studying the first few results, he discovered the pattern behind the game. D. His study suggests that the belief that rock-paper-scissors game is random is wrong. 14. According to the study, if player A has just used rock to beat player B’s scissors, then A is more likely to choose _________ and B is more likely to choose _________. A. rock; paper B. rock; scissors C. scissors; rock D. paper; scissors 15. What will Wang study about rock-paper-scissors in the future, according to the article? A. The functions related to the game that are planted into our brains. B. How human brains make quick decisions when competing in the game. C. The psychology behind the players who always win the game. D. How to improve players’ ability to predict opponents’ moves. 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多 余选项。 Friendship is a very important human relationship and everyone needs good friends. While all airplanes can fly, some are able to fly farther than others. This is because not all airplanes are built the same. For example, a fighter plane looks very different from a plane that people fly in when they want to go on a holiday. The teachers wondered how they could make students understand this. Then, the science teacher, Mr Moose, decided that the school should have a paper airplane contest. Every student would design a paper airplane. They would stand in a line in the playground behind the school. The students would take turns throwing their airplanes. The student whose airplane went the farthest would win. When Mr Moose announced the paper airplane contest to the students, they were very excited. A student named Paul, who was on the school sports team, said to everyone else that his airplane would win. “I am the strongest,” Paul said. “So I will be able to throw my airplane the farthest.” However, while Paul was saying this, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. Brian did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest. Brian realized what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big stack (叠) of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into his backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded an airplane. It didn’t go very far, so Brian took another piece and folded another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. Brian kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them. Some went very far and some did not. Finally, when Brian had used all the paper, he walked up to the airplane that had flown the farthest and picked it up. The next day was the contest. All the students lined up. Everyone took turns. After a while, everyone had thrown except Paul and Brian. Paul went first. With a loud yell, he threw the airplane into the sky. It went farther than every other airplane. Everyone cheered. 注意: 1. 所续写短文词数应为 150 左右; 2. 续写部分分为两段,每段开头语已给出,不计入总词数; Paragraph 1: Finally, it was Brian’s turn. ____________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Brian won because he tried out many solutions to the problem of how to make an airplane fly very far. _______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________
