Show the pictures and the teacher say something about the picture using the past simple irregular verbs as a model. Then show other pictures, the students can do it. Explain to the students although there are many common verbs in English which have the regular past simple form. Tell them this means they will have to learn them individually. Put up some of the common verbs, as follows: Infinitive Past tense go went get got have had leave left meet met see saw spend spent swim swam take took Step 2 Read out the names of the place and have the students repeat after the teacher. Ask them to find the place on the map. Step 3 Revision (This activity provides the students further practise) Ask the students to say something about the journey in the past and now. Eg: It usually takes me nine hours to get to Los Angeles. (last Sunday) It took me ten hours to get to Los Angeles last Sunday. Step 4 Pre-listening Ask the students to listen to the recording and follow the route in their books. They can check with a partner. Collect the answers from the class in order. 1 Los Angeles 2 Disneyland 3 Hollywood 4 Santa Monica 5 Pacific Ocean Step 5 While-listening Ask the students to think over the question before they do the listening activity. Guess: What happened to Betty's journey? The teacher can give the students some hints. In this way, the students can guess out the main idea of the listening passage. 1 Ask the students to listen to the recording once; 2 Before they do the exercise, play a game with the students; 3 Ask a student to tell whether the sentence is true or false. If it is false, say the correct answer. o 1 Tony is going to Los Angeles. ( T ) o 2 Betty went to Los Angeles one year ago. ( F ) →Betty went to Los Angeles two years ago. o 3 It took about ten hours to get to Los Angeles. ( F ) →It took about nine hours to get to Los Angeles. o 4 Betty went to Hollywood first. ( T ) 4 Ask the students to listen again, work in groups and answer the questions: o When did Betty go to Los Angeles on holiday? o How long did it take her? o Where did she go? o Who met her at the airport? o How long did they spend in Los Angeles? o What did they see? o Where did they go swimming? 5 Collect the answers from the class, having one student ask and another answer. Answers: 1. She went there two years ago. 2. It took her about nine hours. 3. She went to Disneyland, then Hollywood and finally Santa Monica. 4. Her aunt and uncle met her at the airport. 5. They spent two days in Los Angeles. 6. They saw the homes of the movie stars. 7. They went swimming in the Pacific Ocean at Santa Monica. Step 6 Post-listening Ask the students to work in pairs of in group. Say you must have your own journey experience, so why not share it with your classmates? You can use the target language on the screen. o A: Where did you go? o B: I went to ______. o A: When did you go? o B: I went _________. o A: How did you get there? o B: I got there by ______. o A: How long did you spend there? o B: I spent _______ there. o A: What did you do/see? o B: I saw _________________. o A: What was it like? o B: It was _________. Give the students 3-4minutes to do this oral practice and then ask some of the pairs to show their conversations and share their journey experience. Step 7 Maury's journey Tell the students that the teacher himself had an unforgettable journey. He'd like to share it with all of the students. But before that, the students have to finish the story first. Two years ago, I went (go) to California. It took (take) me about nine hours to get to Los Angeles. I was (be) very tired. Then we left (leave) Los Angeles. I spent (spend) two days in Disneyland, but I only met (meet) Mickey Mouse. I did not see other cartoons. When I got (get) to Hollywood, I saw (see) the homes of movie stars. Oh, boring! At last, I got (get) to Santa Monica. When I swam (swim) in the Pacific Ocean, I saw (see) a shark! It swam (swim) near me! I swam (swim) to the beach and ran (run) away quickly! I had (have) a bad time there! After the students have learned about the story, ask them to say how it was like.
