No doubt the store was crowded with people buying presents and the assistants were dead_beat and wanted to go home. It seemed that all the necessary checks were made before the store was locked ,and the assistants went home to enjoy the threeday holiday.
Unfortunately, the man was still in the store. When he realized that,he decided to make the best of it. In the store, of course, there was plenty of food, drink and bedding. There must have been radios and television sets, which no one could tell whether the man had ever used. When the store reopened, the man was discovered in bed with a large number of empty bottles beside him. He seemed to have been very happy. Everyone else was enjoying Christmas,so he saw no reason why he should not do the same. Happily enough,he let the police take him away. Perhaps he had a better Christmas than usual. It was reported that the man would have to stay in prison for seven days. Most funny stories are based on comic situations. In spite of national differences, certain funny situations have a universal attraction. No matter where you live, you would find it difficult not to laugh at, say Charlie Chaplin’s early films. However,a new type of humour, which starts largely from the U.S., has recently come into fashion. It is called “sick humour”.
Comedians base their jokes on tragic situations like violent death or serious accidents. The following “sick humour” will enable you to amuse yourself.
A man who had broken his right leg was taken to hospital a few weeks before Christmas. From the moment he arrived there, he kept on bothering his doctor to tell him when he would be able to go home. He was afraid of having to spend Christmas in hospital. Though the doctor did his best, the patient’s recovery was slow. On Christmas Day,the man still had his right leg in plaster(石膏). He spent a miserable day in bed thinking of all the fun he was missing. The following day, however, the doctor consoled him by telling him that his chances of being able to leave hospital in time for New Year celebrations were good. The man took heart and, sure enough,on New Year’s Eve he was able to hobble(蹒跚) along to a party. To make up for his unpleasant experiences in hospital, the man drank a little more than it was good for him. In the process, he enjoyed himself thoroughly and kept telling everybody how much he hated hospitals. He was still murmuring something about hospitals at the end of the party when he slipped on a piece of ice and broke his left leg.

We spent a day in the country, picking wild flowers. With the car full of flowers we were going home. On our way back my wife noticed a cupboard(橱柜) outside a furniture shop. It was
tall and narrow. “Buy it,”my wife said at once. “We’ll carry it home on the roof rack(行李架). I’ve always wanted one like that.”
What could I do? Ten minutes later I was 20 pounds poorer; and the cupboard, was tied on to the roof rack. It was six inches long and eighteen inches square, quite heavy too.
In the gathering darkness I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed unusually polite that evening. The police even stopped the traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.
After a time my wife said,“There’s a long line of cars behind. Why don’t they overtake,I wonder?”
In fact,a police car did overtake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously as they passed. But then, with great kindness, they led us through the rushhour traffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One of the officers came to me.
“Right, sir,” he said,“Do you need any more help?”
I was a bit puzzled.“Thanks, officer,”I said.“You have been very kind. I live just on the road.”
He was staring at our car;first at the flowers, then at the cupboard.“Well, well,”he said, laughing.“It’s a cupboard you’ve got there! We thought it was, something else.”
My wife began to laugh. Then the truth hit me like a stone between the eyes. I smiled at the officer. “Yes,it’s a cupboard, but thanks again.” I drove home as fast as I could.

Why a Sense of Humour Is Important?
Humour shows a person’s character. If you can see everything with a sense of humour, you are an interesting person, and people won’t feel bored when they are with you. It also shows that you are a welleducated person.
You are healthy and happy with your sense of humour, for it always keeps you in high spirits, which is good for your health. A sense of humour changes the colour of the whole world for you.
You will also have plenty of friends with your sense of humour. People feel it a pleasure to be with you,for you help them to see things from an entirely different and much brighter point of view. You give people strength and you lighten their hearts with hope.
