LowCost Gifts for Mother’s Day
Gift No.1
Offer to be your mother’s health friend. Promise to be there for any and all doctor’s visits whether a disease or a regular medical checkup. Most mothers always say “no need,” but another set of eyes and ears is always a good idea at a doctor’s visit. The best part? This one is free.

Help your mother organize all of her medical records, which include the test results and medical information. Put them all in one place. Be sure to make a list of all of her medicines and what times she takes them. “Having all this information in one place could end up saving your mother’s life,” Dr. Marie Savard said.

It’s a bicyclist’s dream: a bike that can’t be stolen. The Yerka, designed by three young Chilean engineering students, is the latest entry in a trend of bikes. They use their saddle seat as a lock. They can also use their handlebar(手柄)as a lock. But the inventors of the Yerka have made an improvement to it. The bike’s lower frame opens up into two arms that are then connected to the seat post and locked to a post, so thieves would have to destroy a Yerka to get it unlocked.
“That’s why our motto is ‘A bike that gets stolen is no longer a bike’. What we have here is truly an unstealable bike,” said Cristobal Cabello, who came up with the design during a college engineering class with childhood friends Andres Roi Eggers and Juan Jose Monsalve.
In Chile and elsewhere in Latin America, the spread of cycling lanes, storage
- 18 -
racks and bike share programs are encouraging people to change from cars to bikes , which are cheaper and environmentally friendly. Cristobal Galban said a study by his team in 2013 found that the use of bikes has doubled among Chileans in five years.
The main problem in Chile and elsewhere are the robberies. The most effective strategy commonly used in London today is to take the bike into the office with the rider. Other strategies involve using a bike that looks so unattractive that nobody will want to steal it. But now the Yerka can help solve the problem.
Now , while waiting for the patent(专利)to be approved and carrying out more tests, the team plans to raise funds. They’re also looking for a partner who can invest $300,000 needed to produce 1,000 bikes first that they hope will be sold by mid-2016.
24. Which of the following is NOT true about the Yerka in Paragraph 1?
A. It looks very attractive B. It aims at not being stolen
C. It leads the new trend of bikes D. It uses its saddle seat as a lock
25. According to Cristobal Cabello, it can be inferred that the Yerka
A. will be safe if it is fully used B. will be broken if it gets stolen
C. will be expensive if it gets repaired D. will not be stolen even if it is unlocked
26. From the last paragraph, we can learn that the Yerka .
A. doesn’t need a lot of money B. can’t be bought in the market yet
C. will be popular with bike riders D. will be affordable for ordinary people
27. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Bikes in Chile can easily get stolen B. Chile is encouraging the use of bikes
C. An expensive bike drew the world’s attention
D. Three Chileans designed an unstealable bike

Horses are sensitive to the facial expressions and attention of other horses,
- 18 -
including the direction of the eyes and ears. The findings, reported in the Cell Press journal Current Biology on August 4, are a reminder for us humans to look beyond our own limitations and recognize that other species may communicate in ways that we can’t, the researchers say. After all, human ears aren’t mobile.
“Our study is the first to examine a potential cue(线索) to attention that humans do not have the ears,” says Jennifer Wathan of the University of Sussex. “Previous work investigating communication of attention in animals has focused on cues that humans use: body direction, head direction, and eye stare; no one else had gone beyond that. However, we found that in horses their ear position was also an important visual signal that other horses respond to. In fact, horses need to see the detailed facial features of both eyes and ears before they use another horse’s head direction to guide them.”
The new study also challenges the earlier held view that animals with eyes to the sides of their heads can’t gather information based on the direction of one another’ stare.
Wathan and the study’s senior author Karen McComb took photographs to record cues given by horses when they were paying attention to something. Then Wathan and McComb use these photographs as life-sized models for other horses to look at as they chose between two feeding buckets. In each case, the horse in the photo was paying attention to one of the buckets and not the other. In some cases, the researchers also controlled the image to remove information from key facial areas, including the eyes and the ears.
The researchers’ observations show that horses rely on the head direction of other horses to find food. However, that ability to read each other’s interest level is disrupted when parts of the face---the eyes and ears—are covered up with masks. The ability to correctly judge attention also varied depending on the identity of the horse pictured, suggesting that individual facial features may be important, the researchers report.
28. What can we know from the first paragraph?
A. Horses are the most sensitive animals.
- 18 -
B. Researchers should have great creativity.
C. People should learn to make their ears mobile.
D. People should strengthen their communication with animals.
29. The previous researchers focused on all the following EXCEPT______.
A. body direction B. head direction C. ear direction D. eye direction
30. Which of the following is WRONG according to the experiment?
A. the horses in the photos the researchers used are as large as real horses.
B. The researchers recorded horses’ reaction by means of photographing them.
C. Horses’ facial features may affect horses’ ability to correctly judge attention.
D. The horse pictured in the photograph was looking at both buckets at the same time.

a. fed up the horses b. got a camera ready
c. take photos with horses d. covered the eyes and ears of the horses

You never see him, but they're with you every time you fly. They record where you are going, how fast you're traveling and whether everything on your airplane is functioning normally. Their ability to withstand almost any disaster makes them seem like something out of a megic book. They're known as the black box.
When planes fall from the sky, as a Yemeni airliner did on its way to Comoros Islands in the India ocean June 30, 2009, the black box is the best bet for identifying what went wrong. So when a French submarine (潜水艇) detected the device's homing signal five days later, the discovery marked a huge step toward determining the cause of a tragedy in which 152 passengers were killed.
In 1958, Australian scientist David Warren developed a flight-memory recorder that would track basic information like altitude and direction. That was the first mode for a black box, which became a requirement on all U.S. commercial flights by
- 18 -
1960. Early models often failed to withstand crashes, however, so in 1965 the device(装置) was completely redesigned and moved to the back of the plane – the area least affected by impact – from its original position in the landing wells (起落架舱). The same year, the Federal Aviation Authority required that the boxes, which were never actually black, be painted orange or yellow to aid visibility.
Modern airplanes have two black boxes: a voice recorder, which tracks pilots' conversations, and a flight-data recorder, which monitors fuel levels, engine noises and other operating functions that help investigators reconstruct the aircraft's final moments. Placed in an insulated ( 隔绝的) case and surrounded by a quarter-inch-thick panels of stainless steel, the boxes can withstand massive force and temperatures up to 2,000℉. When in deep water, they're also able to emit signals from depths of 20,000 ft. Experts believe the boxes from Air France Flight 447, which crashed near Brazil on June 1,2009, are in water nearly that deep, but statistics say they're still likely to turn up. In the approximately 20 deep-sea crashes over the past 30 years, only one plane's black boxes were never recovered.
32.In Paragraph 1,the author wants to say the black box_________.
A. is an necessary device on an airplane
B. comes from a comic book
C. can prevent disasters
D. can control the function of an airplane
33.From the black box on the Yemeni airliner_________could be found.
A. the scene of the crash and the degree of the damage
B. the total number of passengers on board
C. data for analyzing the cause of the crash
D. homing signals sent by the pilot before the crash
34.Why was the black box redesigned in 1965?
A. New materials became available by that time.
B. The early models often got damaged in the crash.
C. Too much space was needed for its device.
D. The early models didn't provide the needed data.
- 18 -
35.What do we know about the black boxes from Air France Flight 447?
A. There is still a good chance of their being recovered.
B. There is an urgent need for them to be reconstructed.
C. They have stopped sending homing signals.
D.They were destroyed somewhere near Brazil.

从第一段中“They record where you are going, how fast you're traveling and whether everything on your airplane is functioning normally. Their ability to withstand almost any disaster makes them seem like something out of a comic book”句意:他们记录了你要去哪里,你的旅行是否一切运作正常。 故选A。
文中第二段“the black box is the best bet for identifying what went wrong.”以及“the discovery marked a huge step toward determining the cause of a tragedy in which 152 passengers were killed. ”意思是黑匣子是最好的赌注来识别到底是什么出了错。该发现标志着对确定一个悲剧,152名乘客死亡原因的巨大的一步。可见黑匣子在分析事故原因起着很重要的作用。故选C。
34.细节理解题。文中第三段“That was the first mode for a black box, which became a requirement on all U.S. commercial flights by 1960.

Last week, our class had a heated discussion about “Which is more important, health or appearance?. Our opinions are divided.
Some of us hold the opinion that appearance is more important than health. As is known to all, good appearance makes a person more attractive, which will help make more friends. Besides, it will be much easier for one to find a good job if he has good appearance, because people usually pay more attention to appearance.

However, others insist that health is more important than appearance. People usually feel energetic if they are healthy. And this will cause them to work and study more efficiently. In addition, people with good health are less likely to suffer illness, adding no extra burden to their family. So it’s of great importance to stay healthy.
As far as I’m concerned, health matters more than appearance in our life. We can’t do anything well without good health. It also does good to our family if we’re all healthy. Only with good health can we work and study better.
