17、In 1905, as part of his Special Theory of Relativity, Albert Einstein published the point that a large amount of energy could be released from a small amount of matter. This was expressed by the equation E = mc2. But bombs were not what Einstein had in mind when he published this equation.
- 54 -
In 1929, he publicly declared that if a war broke out he would "refuse to do war service, direct or indirect...." His position would change in 1933, as the result of Adolf Hitler's coming into power in Germany.
Einstein's greatest role in the invention of the atomic bomb was signing a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt urging that the bomb be built because some physicists feared that Germany might be working on an atomic bomb. Among those concerned were physicists Leo Szilard and Eugene Wigner. But they had no influence with those in power. So in July 1939 they explained the problem to someone who did: Albert Einstein. After talking with Einstein, in August 1939 Szilard wrote a letter to President Roosevelt with Einstein's signature on it, which was delivered to Roosevelt in October 1939.
Germany had invaded Poland the previous month, the time was ripe for action. That October research of a-bomb began but proceeded slowly because the invention of the atomic bomb seemed distant and unlikely. In April 1940 an Einstein letter, ghost-written by Szilard, pressed the researchers on the need for "greater speed".
As the realization of nuclear weapons grew near, Einstein looked beyond the current war to future problems that such weapons could bring. He wrote to his friend about his fear about the future use of the a-bomb.
The atomic bombings of Japan occurred three months after Germany gave in.
In November 1954, five months before his death, Einstein summarized his feelings about his role in the creation of the atomic bomb: "I made one great mistake in my life...when I signed the letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atom bombs be made; but there was some justification---the danger that the Germans would make them?

“Sometimes,” Smith answered with a smile.
“Sometimes?” The man said. “What do you mean?”
“Well,” answered Smith slowly, “When there’s a party in town, it is my daughter’s, Mary. When there’s a football game, it’s my son’s, John. After I wash it, and it looks really nice and clean, it’s my wife’s. And when it needs gas, it’s mine.”

I once had my Chinese MBA students brainstorming on “two-hour business plans”. I separated them into six groups and gave them an example: a restaurant chain. The more original their idea, the better, I said. Finally, five of the six groups presented plans for restaurant chains. The sixth proposed a catering service. Though I admitted the time limit had been difficult, I expressed my disappointment.
My students were middle managers, financial analysts and financiers from state owned enterprises and global companies. They were not without talent or opinions, but they had been shaped by an educational system that rarely stressed or rewarded critical thinking or inventiveness. The scene I just described came in different forms during my two years’ teaching at the school. Papers were often copied from the Web and the Harvard Business Review. Case study debates were written up and just memorized. Students frequently said that copying is a superior business strategy, better than inventing and creating.
In China, every product you can imagine has been made and sold. But so few well developed marketing and management minds have been raised that it will be a long time before most people in the world can name a Chinese brand.
- 54 -
With this problem in mind, partnerships with institutions like Yale and MIT have been established. And then there’s the “thousand talent scheme”: this new government program is intended to improve technological modernization by attracting top foreign trained scientists to the mainland with big money. But there are worries about China’s research environment. It’s hardly known for producing independent thinking and openness, and even big salary offers may not be attractive enough to overcome this.
At last, for China, becoming a major world creator is not just about setting up partnerships with top Western universities. Nor is it about gathering a group of well educated people and telling them to think creatively. It’s about establishing a rich learning environment for young minds. It’s not that simple.
1. Why does the author feel disappointed at his students?
A. Because there is one group presenting a catering service.
B. Because the six groups made projects for restaurant chains.
C. Because all the students copied a case for the difficult topic.
D. Because the students’ ideas were lacking in creativeness.
2. Which of the following scenes is NOT considered as lack of creation?
A. Papers were often downloaded from the Internet.
B. Students often said that copying is a preferable business strategy.
C. Students combine knowledge and critical thoughts to solve a problem.
D. Case study debates were written up as well as recited.
3. The underlined word “scheme” in the forth paragraph means ________.
A. timetable B. theme C. project D. policy
4. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. China can make and sell any product all over the world
B. high pay may not solve the problem of China’s research environment
C. cooperation with institutions has been set up to make a Chinese brand

24、I felt sadly yesterday when our teacher told us something about Project Hope in class. It has set up to help the children in the countryside who can’t pay to go to school. After school I came home. I was wondering if I could do something for the Project then I caught sight of money-collecting box on the table. Then I made up my minds to send my pocket money which I had saved for nearly one year for the children who wanted to go to school. I wrote a letter to him and hurried to the post office. Together with the letter I posted the money and sent with my best wishes to them.

Using a Mobile Phone to Improve Mother and Child Health
People around the world are working to expand the uses for mobile technology in health care.
In the world, there are six billion mobile phone users in a population of seven billion people.
1 Africa has widespread adoption. Three or four years ago the penetration(进入;使用) rates were 20 percent or 30 percent, and now they're getting upwards of 60 percent in some countries.
- 54 -
2 Earlier research has been to look at mobile technologies and HIV and AIDS. And so we have some great evidence on the effectiveness of mobiles.
During the first week of December, 2012, more than 4,000 people from 50 countries met for the fourth annual mHealth Summit. It brought together experts from what the organizers call the mHealth ecosystem.
In 2011 Secretary of State Hillary Clinton started a public/private partnership called the Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action, or MAMA. There are about 800 women a day and about three million babies a year die from pregnancy and childbirth-related causes. 3 The messages cover pregnancy and the first year of a baby's life. These health messages may also be sent to a pregnant woman's husband and mother-in-law. 4 Messages can be text or voicemail. You can have a pregnant woman in Bangladesh registered into a system that provides messages that help her know what to do and when to do certain things.
Simple text messages can be important sources of information to people without Internet access. 5 They have to be able to read through thousands of entries that come back to them on Google, for example, and then figure out what that information means to them. And that's not something that someone in a poor and uneducated kind of situation can do.

Write down your questions.

C从 …with my aunt and cousins who treated me unfairly. My cousins teased me…
B前部分为 My cousins teased me,那么由 and 连接的内容应与前部分内容在语意上保持一致,故此处应为 my aunt never showed me any love。
shout at sb
- 54 -
But after an illness killed several students, new owners…
The food was bad and I was often cold…
而 make noise 和 make faces 都不合乎语境。
My new life ___15___ at Thornfield Hall, a large country house 及 my time was mainly spent with Adele and the servants 可知“我”在一个家庭当了私人教师。
I wondered if he would ever look for me again
B从下文 my time was mainly spent with Adele and the servants 可推测,Mr Rochester 很少呆在家里。
B前面说 Mr Rochester 很少呆在家里,这与后面的 my time was mainly spent with Adele and the servants 构成因果关系,故此处选用so。
Often I heard odd sounds ___20___ from the top floor of the house
- 54 -

We can easily see many people do not turn off the lights or the electric fans immediately after they use them; many disposable products are being used in our daily life; many students drop a lot of good food into the garbage can. In the office, some equipment is often on for a long time but nobody is using it. What’s worse, a great deal of paper has been wasted .

Don’t Eat Snacks
Good morning, everyone! The topic of my speech today is “Don’t eat snacks”.
As you can see, there is a serious phenomenon in our school that many students will crowd in the school store to buy snacks after each class and some students even eat snacks in class.
Eating snacks is a bad habit and is also a waste of money. In addition, most snacks are unhealthy food, for they contain too much fat and sugar. Eating snacks improperly may lead to fatness and illness. What’s worse, some students throw the wrappers everywhere, which pollutes our campus.
Dear fellow students, it’s high time that we shouldn’t act like kids any more. We high school students, should develop good eating habits. Remember that three regular meals a day as well as a balanced diet are essential for us. Let’s form good eating habits and say no to snacks.
Thanks for listening.
