When you put down your pens at the end of the college entrance exam, 12 hard years of study will have come to an end. Forget your studies for a while. It’s time to enjoy yourselves!
There are many ways to celebrate this special month of graduation. You can have photos taken with your classmates and teachers, or dine out together and exchange gifts. High school students in Western countries such as the United States and Canada usually have a prom to mark their graduation. It’s to mark the time kids turn into young men and women. After the prom(毕业舞会), teenagers either go to college or find a job. It means they are no longer as dependent on their parents as they were before.
At the prom, boys usually dress in dinner jackets and bow ties, though many different types of formal clothes are worn. Traditionally, girls give boys matching boutonnieres (a small collection of flowers they pin to their jackets). Girls traditionally wear formal dresses, or dress to shock or be noticed, in shiny or brightly colored materials.
Common prom activities include dining, dancing, the crowning (加冠) of a prom king and queen, and just talking to friends. In some cases, high school students collect funds for their class prom through the four years of their high school.
High schools in or near large cities may rent ballrooms at expensive hotels or, to be unusual, on a pleasure cruise boat.
But often costs are cut by simply using the school gym. Students make a lot of effort to decorate the gym to make the event special. The music played at the prom will be the most popular kinds, like rock and hip-hop.
The students elect the Prom Queen. She is partnered with a Prom King who is elected similarly. These are great honors that the pair take very seriously. The two dance with each other to celebrate their election.
Sometimes teachers and parents also go to the prom. But others like to go with
- 12 -
friends, to whom they are soon going to be saying goodbye.
If you like the idea of a prom, why don’t you and your classmates organize one for your graduation?

B. They wear formal clothes or special clothes.

C. Holding it in the school gym. D. Wearing formal dresses.
3. Why do some students attend the prom with their friends?

B. They don’t like to be accompanied by their parents.
C. They don’t want to depend on their parents.

Fear may be felt in the heart as well as in the head, according to a study that has found a link between the cycles of a beating heart and the chance of someone feeling fear.
Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely to feel a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are contracting(收缩) and pumping blood around their bodies, compared with the point when the heartbeat is relaxed. Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to
- 12 -
a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation.
Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said: "Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart."
The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr Garfinkel said, "The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus our hearts can also affect what we see and what we don’t see - and guide whether we see fear."
To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner(扫描仪) to show how the brain influences the way the heart changes a person’s feeling of fear.
"We have found an important mechanism by which the heart and brain ‘speak’to each other to change our feelings and reduce fear," Dr Garfinkel said.
"We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced, we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders, and also for those for those who may be suffering from serious stress disorder."
8. What is the finding of the study?
A. One’s heart affects how he feels fear.
B. fear is a result of one’s relaxed heartbeat.
C. fear has something to do with one’s health.
D. Ones fast heartbeats are likely to cause fear.
9. The study was carried out by analyzing _______.
A. volunteers’ heartbeats when they saw terrible pictures
B. the time volunteers saw fearful pictures and their health conditions
C. Volunteers’ reactions to horrible pictures and data form their brain scans
D. different pictures shown to volunteers and their heart-brain communication
10. Which of the following is closest in meaning to "mechanism" in Paragraph 6?
A. Order B. system C. Machine D. Treatment

If you're looking for a challenging situation to practice your English, pick up the phone. Not being able to see the other person and the body language can make the chatting difficult. 11 Here are some tips to guide you through an average phone conversation in English.
1.Greetings
Every phone call should begin with a polite greeting such as “Hi, how've you been?” or “Nice to hear from you”. Even if you're calling a business contact for a specific
- 12 -
purpose, it'd be rude to jump right into business. 12
2.Getting to the point
There always comes the point where you want to move on from friendly chatting and get down to business. What should you do in this situation? 13 However, if you are waiting to find out why someone called you, you can guide the conversation by saying “So what can I do for you?”
3.Interrupting without offence
Sometimes you may happen to be speaking with a very talkative person. 14 Keep in mind when you'd like to interrupt, and be sure to do it politely. For example, begin with “I'd like to say something here”.
4.Closing the call
This can be the trickiest part of the conversation! It may be the time to offer good wishes if it's appropriate. 15 Sometimes it's easiest to just say you enjoyed speaking to the other person. Also remember cleverly saying the word well at the beginning of a sentence can indicate you're ready to end the conversation.
A.Use the phrase “I'm just calling to...” to change to the topic at hand.
B.Additionally, you may want to confirm any plans you've made.
C.You should make a little small talk at the beginning.
D.You'd better greet him or her in a friendly way.
E.So it may be difficult to get a word in.
F.Practice English through phone calls.
G.Never fear, though!

I remember how I become a good table tennis player.
The first day when I went to high school, I saw some of my classmates playing table tennis. Amazed at how skillful they were, I was determined to be just as good. Later on, I often watched them carefully to learn their skill. Then I kept practicing until I became confident enough to challenge the good players. At the end of the term I became one of the best players in my class.
I am really proud of this experience, because it helps me realize that we all can fulfill our potential and achieve something through hard work. It also helps me understand the proverb “Practice makes perfect”.
