A
You almost certainly know the phrase, “A dog is man’s best friend” and I can confirm(确定),from my own experience, that this is the truth. I personally can’t imagine my life without a dog. As a dog owner, a dog’s running towards you, snuggling(依偎) up to you or pleasantly barking are all really great feelings. Moreover, you have something that always listens to you and loves you. Because of these facts dogs are the best and the most beautiful creatures for me.
Dogs aren’t only pets. They can often help people. Firstly, like sheepdogs, they really help with shepherding. Secondly, like sniffer dogs(嗅探犬), they can be trained to search for hard drugs. And lastly, I want to talk about guide-dogs which are actually a great miracle for blind people. These dogs can deal with a lot of issues and problems in a blind person’s life and they are perfect mediators between healthy people and sightless ones. They ensure that handicapped people can live normal lives and this is the best thing that they can do. Their training for this role, however, is not easy. First they are sent to a normal family and then the dogs are specially trained. They have to learn perhaps 50 different tasks or disciplines. And then, when they are fully trained, they are sent to a new family where they try to make life as normal as possible for their owners.
The price of training the dogs is a very high sum. But blind people can usually get the monetary support from some sponsors or some donations from organizations which raise money especially for them. You can help too because in many supermarkets and other shops there are very often places where you can donate. And it’s not just about making a big donation; small amounts help too.
1. A perfect guide-dog must be trained ____
A. to search for thieves B. by the blind from young
C. to learn certain skills D. to finish over 50 different tasks
2. The underlined word in the second paragraph means____
A. 药品 B.调解者 C. 治疗者 D.冥想
3. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The cost of training a sniffer dog is very high.
B. Sheepdogs also can help with the blind man.
C. Guide-dogs are born with special abilities.
D. Guide-dogs contribute a lot to blind men.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Dogs Is Man’s Best Friend B. Blind Man and Dog
C. I Like My Dog Very Much D. Those Beautiful Creatures
B
When I paid for the bicycle repair, the repairman told me, “No charge, Professor Pan. We’re friends.”
- 6 -
“I’d rather pay,” I replied. “If it’s free, I can’t afford it.”
Chinese often refuse payment for professional services, insisting, “We’re friends now.” But then they show up later to ask me to tutor them in English, or get them into an American university, and I wish I’d have just paid the 30 yuan I owed them in the first place.
According to the Americans, “There’s no free lunch,” meaning that there’s a price for everything, and I’m always looking around to figure out what this means.
Many of our neighbors have given us fruit or flowers or costly teas, never asking anything in return. For years, a bicycle repairman has repeatedly refused to let me pay him. “Wait until you have something major to fix.” he insists.
Chinese generosity is a real education for Americans like me, who would rather avoid social entanglements(纠纷) and just hand over the money. But cash can’t make up for the greatest gift---friendship.
When an American saw some of my friends sitting on bamboo stools under the trees, sipping tea, he said, “They must have nothing better to do.” “Actually,” I said, “they are professors, with plenty to do. But probably you’re right in saying that, at this moment, they have nothing better to do. And neither do I.”
And I joined the group. We chatted about tea and Chinese cooking and how much my boys have grown since we arrived. One man said, “They were pocket-sized when you came here. Now they’re taller than you. How time flies.”
How life flies. And Chinese are smart enough to share what they know they cannot keep. They freely give of their time, never too busy to help a friend. And they are teaching me, slowly, to both give and receive. So the next time someone says, “No charge. We’re friends.” I will thank them heartily. But if they show up later asking me to tutor them in English, I’ll make sure they tutor my son in Chinese as well, because there’s still no free lunch.
5. Why did the author insist on paying the repairman while he was offered free repairs?
A. Because he was an upright man.
B. Because he didn’t know the repairman.
C. Because he thought it natural to pay for others’ service.
D. Because he didn’t want to help others in return.
6. Generally, the author thinks that ______.
A. Chinese are generous and always ready to help their friends
B. Chinese are good at the exchange of equal values
C. Chinese are free enough to drink and chat with their friends
D. Chinese are helpful but don’t treasure time
7. The best title for the passage should be “______”.
A. Still No Free Lunch
B. A Good Lesson from Chinese
C. True Help or Not
D. Learn to Both Give and Receive
8. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. All the Chinese help foreigners on purpose.
B. Chinese like to ask for help.
- 6 -
A. The author thinks little of the Chinese way of life.
B. The author thinks that Chinese are wise enough to enjoy the limited life.

The Best Ways to Offer Support and Encouragement
Whether it is a friend, family member, or co-worker, at some time or another somebody will need support and encouragement. This could be the result of a disappointing change in life, a health change or other similar challenges._9_ Even if you do not think that you have the ability to offer the proper support and encouragement, your willingness to be there and to listen may be enough.
Each situation is different, and each would require different levels of both support and encouragement. 10_ Helping keep up someone’s spirits when they are feeling helpless just by letting them know you are there, can make a serious difference in their lives.
_11_ For people in this situation, often a telephone call, or dropping in to say “Hello” is more than enough. You may not feel that you are doing much of anything, but to the person who is feeling isolated the effort you take to stop and see them, or call them can make a big difference. For someone who has recently lost a job, you may be able to offer support by helping them network effectively. Or, you may be able to help them prepare a new resume, apply for benefits, of a number of other “small” things that may seem insignificant to you, but to them can be a very significant event.
_12_ However, if you let them know that you are there for them, and make it a point to check in with them regularly, they may soon feel more comfortable and share them with you. Take a person who is suffering from depression for example.
_13_They may not be willing to admit that there is something wrong. However, if you trust your instincts(直觉) and take a little extra care to support and encourage them even in little ways, you can make a difference in their overall outlook.
A. You know that there is something wrong.
B. All too often, people feel lonely and do not know where to turn.
C. So you may need support and encouragement to pull through.
D. You may not always understand all of the issues going on in someone’s life.
E. In such cases, it is natural for you to reach out and offer your support and encouragement.
F. You know better than anyone the best ways to support and encourage someone who is going through a difficult time.
G. The support you offer could be as simple as helping with simple household tasks, running errands(跑腿儿), or even being available for telephone calls.
