When someone told 85-year-old Johnny Long that he was called a living legend, he replied, “I don’t know about that, but I’m living, and that’s important.”
Starting in 1949 as a high school band director and later as director of the Troy University band, Johnny Long became known as one of the most inspirational band directors in America. More than three hundred of his students went on to become band directors them-selves. “I have been a band director for more than 60 years and all I know about the word band is that you spell it F-U-N,” Long said. “And if you change that, it’s over.”
Long retired 14 years ago to spend more time with his wife Mary Lynn. But his passion (热情) for bands never went away. He dreamed of forming a top-notch (拔尖的) community band in Troy. But Troy is a small town — with not a ton of top-notch talent. “I didn’t think it would work, I really didn’t,” Long said.
Fortunately, there was one thing Johnny hadn’t considered: the devotion of his former students. Now, once a week during the concert season, they drive in from all over the south and across the decades.
65-year-old Bobby Johnson was in Long’s first college class. He lives in Atlanta
and drives 3 hours to practice. Johnson said he does it because Long’s “such a unique character and I just admire him so much.”
Many people do it for the same reason. “He’s the single biggest influence on my career.” “He was a father figure to me. He’s just a genuine person.”
Long said he wanted to be remembered as a teacher. “I think ‘teacher’ is the greatest word in the English language, next to ‘mother’.”
56. What Long got most from bands was ______.
A. pleasure B. health C. wealth D. honor
57. Why did Long retire 14 years ago?
A. Because he found no band talent in Troy.
B. Because he was tired of working as a director.
C. Because he hoped to spend more time with his wife.
D. Because he found his students were not devoted to music.
58. The words of Long’s students show that ______.
A. Long treated his students like a father
B. Long was born to be a good teacher
C. Long influenced his students greatly
D. Long was very special as a teacher
59. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Johnny Long still teaches at the age of 85.
B. A band director had more than 300 students.
C. A band lover organized a band in a small town.
D. 85-year-old band director still inspires others.

Karaoke is from Japan. The “kara” of karaoke means empty, while the “oke” is a Japanese abbreviation (缩略词) of the English word “orchestra”. These two words coming together mean an orchestra without a singer. I know “karaoke bars” are well known by Americans, but actually we have few karaoke bars in Japan. What we call “karaoke box” is more popular in Japan.
Shinjuku may be a place you want to go. There are huge shopping malls, video centers, movie theaters and many kinds of amusement. It is very crowded, especially on weekends, and you can hardly walk through the area. But don’t worry if you don’t know where to go because people who work at those karaoke boxes are on the street, and they will introduce you to the service they have, or they offer you a discount to visit their karaoke box.
After you have settled into the room and your music starts, you can adjust the key or tempo (调) of the song if you feel it is too high or low, or too fast or slow. Also, if you want to have harmony (和声), you can. But the important thing here is you should listen to other people singing. Usually people like to have audiences and that’s what people like when doing karaoke.
At karaoke boxes, you should not look into other rooms. You can’t smoke or drink if you are under twenty. Though there are no specific people who go around the boxes because they don’t want to make their customers feel nervous, it is important to follow these rules.
Though some people would not like singing in front of people even if they were friends or family, in my opinion, you can still have a lot of fun there. I think it is a way to express ourselves to people whom we like, and we want to say, “Listen to me! I am here!”
60. Which of the following is TRUE about Shinjuku in Japan?
A. The karaoke box originated there.
B. It’s easy for people to get lost there.
C. It provides a wide choice of entertainment.
D. Most of Japanese karaoke boxes are located there.
61. What does the author think is important when enjoying karaoke?
A. Trying to choose different types of music.
B. Listening to others and being their audience.
C. Changing the key or tempo of the music.
D. Adding harmony to the songs you like.
62. According to the text, it can be learned that the author thinks ______.
A. singing in front of friends or family is very interesting
B. doing karaoke can be a way to communicate with others
C. karaoke boxes in Japan are better than karaoke bars in America
D. karaoke workers should teach their customers to follow the rules

For years, Warner Bros., with help from author JK Rowling, has taken the details of the “Harry Potter” books and made them come alive on the big screen. In a little-known part of the counter-terrorism (反恐怖主义) world, one of the most effective detection systems is a 600-pound animal that works for about 20 pounds of fish a day.
Since the 1960s, the United States and a handful of other countries have trained dolphins and sea lions to detect sea mines and swimmers, and to recover worn-
-out torpedoes (鱼雷) and testing objects used in naval (海军的) exercises.
The U.S. Navy kept its Marine Mammal Program a secret until the 1990s, and this spring CNN became one of the first members of the media to witness firsthand how the program works.
The program trains about 75 Pacific bottlenose dolphins, with natural biosonar
(生物声纳) that tracks better than any manmade device; and 35 California sea lions, with very good underwater eyesight.
Not only do these trained marine mammals track and save millions of dollars in U.S. military equipment, they are also helping to save lives. The Navy won’t reveal whether the dolphins and sea lions have effectively stopped terrorists attempting to do harm to the U.S.
A key part of the training program is teaching these mammals how to stop potentially unfriendly swimmers. The program is also positioned to defend against swimmer terrorist attacks as well.
In the digital age, it seems that there should be more advanced approaches to guard the Navy’s most expensive things. But according to Rothe, the program director, nothing in today’s high-technology world can compete with these mammals’ biosonar abilities. “I hope that one day there is a robot or a UUV (un-manned underwater vehicle) that makes the mammal program out of date,” he said. “But right now this is the best thing out there.”
67. The U.S. Marine Mammal Program trained marine mammals to ______.
A. stop dangerous swimmers
B. catch 20 pounds of fish a day
C. destroy sea mines
D. fire torpedoes
68. The U.S. trained dolphins because they ______.
A. are clever
B. swim very fast
C. have natural biosonar
D. have good underwater eyesight
69. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The trained dolphins are the best way of protection available to the U.S. Navy.
B. There will be dolphin-like robots in the future according to Rothe.
C. The mammal program will become useless soon.
D. Rothe has no faith in today’s high technology.
70. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. Many countries have trained sea animals for counter-terrorism.
B. The Marine Mammal Program was a secret until the 1960s.
C. The trained sea animals have already stopped some terrorists.
D. The U.S. Navy has trained both dolphins and sea lions.

In times of economic downturn, many people start to look for ways to reduce their household budget and save extra cash. Living a thrifty (节俭的) lifestyle does not have to mean doing nothing. 71 Here are some tips.
Track your spending for at least 2 weeks. You won’t really know how to live a thriftier lifestyle until you know where your money is going. Write down every time you spend money and take a look at it at the end of the month. 72
Search the Internet when you have to make purchases. Because of the easy access to information, you can compare prices from more stores in less time. 73 Combining producers’ coupons (优惠券) with store discounts can lead to major savings.
Turn off the lights and other electronics in your home when you are not using them. 74 Leaving electronics on can use a tremendous amount of extra energy, costing you money.
75 When you do have to go out, look for available deals and discounts. If you are a frequent restaurant diner, consider purchasing a guide book for local restaurants, which will help you save money.
A. Eat at home as often as possible.
B. You probably don’t really need 500 channels.
C. If you really can’t live without it, call the company.
D. Open a window and let in the natural light instead.
E. In this way, you will see obvious ways to reduce the small daily expenses.
F. So check your local stores as well as online providers to find the best price.

yourself.

Recently, our class has held a heated discussion about how evening classes should be cancelled. Some of them are in favor the idea that evening classes should be cancelled. To begin with, cancel evening classes mean we have more time to learn by ourselves. Besides, we will have more time to develop our hobby such as reading, playing sports, drawing and so on. However, others oppose to this idea. Compared with studying at home, studying at school may lead to higher study efficiency. What’s worse, the problems in study can be dealing with as soon as possible. I prefer studying at home because I want to form the habit of being independence.

Dear Mike,
How’s it going with you?
You said you would like to come to Hangzhou for a visi, and I strongly advise you to go to Xixi National Wetland Park. I would be very glad to be your guide.
Wetland, known as “the kidney of the earth”, plays an extremely important role in the earth’s ecosystem. Xixi Wetland lies to the west of Hangzhou City, covering an area of about 10 square kilometers. There are varieties of things to do in the park. For example, we can take a boat tour on the river, watching different kinds of birds as we go. We can also enjoy beautiful flowers and have delicious food and so on.
I’m sure we’ll have great fun.
