Try think about sheep jumping over a fence. If you are still awake, take a sleeping pill. People who take pills often become dependent on the drugs. So you lie awake knowing that the new workday will soon arrive. If you have been in such condition for at least one month, you may have primary insomnia(失眠症).‎ ‎ A new study has found that you might fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep longer if you try “cerebral hypothermia.” It is not a complex medical process. It just means cooling down your brain. Eric Nofzinger and Naniel Buysse from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School led the study. They examined twelve people who had sleeping problems. Twelve others had no sleeping problems. Each of them wore a soft plastic cap on their head at bedtime.‎ The caps had tubes inside filled with water. The researchers moved the water through the tubes and then changed the temperature of the water. Other studies showed that people who had sleeping problems often had more chemical reactions in the front of their brain. The researchers thought cooling down the brain might help.‎ ‎ On the first two nights of testing, the patients wore caps with no water. On the next two nights, the caps were worn, but the water was not cooled. Then the researchers cooled the water a little for another two nights. On the final two nights of the study, the temperature of the water was made much cooler. The researchers found that the water caps didn’ t help the patients until the temperature was about 14℃. Most of the patients fell asleep faster and slept better when the coolest water was moving around their head. ‎ ‎ Dr Nfzinger and Dr. Buysse noted that this was only the beginning of the brain temperature study. But they believed they had discovered something important that needed more research.‎ ‎21. The first paragraph is written to _________. ‎ A. explain how serious insomnia is. B. bring forward the topic of the passage.‎ C. tell us the causes of sleeping problems. ‎ D. tell us the danger of having sleeping problems. ‎ ‎22 From the passage we know that “cerebral hypothermia” is actually _________.‎ - 10 -‎ A. a complex medical process. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee(黑猩猩).‎ ‎ In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and - 10 -‎ ‎ fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words.‎ ‎ In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before.‎ ‎ The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination(排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive. ‎ ‎ Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed (品种)known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months.‎ ‎ It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they can't talk back. Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return!‎ ‎28. I’m writing to encourage you to overcome the difficulty and study harder than ever before.‎ ‎ It is time that we should build up good studying habits. I notice that you used to pay no attention to what the teacher had said. When the teacher was giving lessons, you sometimes seemed absent-minded and forget to take notes. As a consequence, you failed in the exams. What’s more, as students, we have had many tests or exams and it is natural that we should achieve success and suffer from failure. When we don’t do well in the exams, we will usually fall in low spirits and no longer study diligently as before. However, we should take a positive attitude towards failure and frustration, because as the saying goes, failure is the mother of success. Besides, we need to be self-confident even if we are faced with the poor results. What we can do is to analyse and find out the cause so that we will not make similar mistakes any more.‎ ‎ When you have trouble learning English, please come to ask me for help.
