Japan’s youth are losing interest in science and as a result, threatening the nation’s industrial progress.According to Japan Science and Technology Agency, young Japanese are surrounded by hightech devices(设备),but are not interested in how they work.
Japanese businesses have succeeded partly because they’ve a great many engineers.A drop in interest could lead to a decline in their numbers and quality.“In the past, the young had a big interest in science and technology.” said Hirano, director of the agency’s policy department.
There are two main reasons for the problem. The first is known as “black box syndrome” of modern technology.
Electronic devices depend on tiny silicon chips, which can only be made in big factories, whose workings can’t be seen by the eyes. The devices, unlike machines of the past driven by gears and wheels, are simply boxes.
Young Japanese, brought up on video games and at home with computers, enjoy using modern technology, but this is a passive interest and different from the curiosity about how things work.“You need an active interest to get interested in science. This is declining in the young.” said Hirano.
About twothirds of Japanese in their 20s use PCs,twice the number of those in their 50s.But only 40% of those in their 20s say they are interested in news about science and technology, compared to 60% of the 50 to 60 year olds.
“Another reason for it is that life in modern Japan is too comfortable,”he said,“A wealthy society reduces people’s desire to modernize and develop their country. To a degree, you can’t avoid this when the fruits of science and technology
- 17 -
are fully developed.” Similarly, science in Europe and the US has also suffered a lack of interest.
21.Japanese youth’s interest in science is dropping probably because________.
A.scientists don’t make much money in Japan
B.there are too many scientists in Japan already
C.science is more difficult for young people to learn
D.they’re not curious about how hightech devices work
22.The underlined word “their” in Paragraph 2 refers to________.
A.Japanese businesses’ B.Japanese engineers’
C.Japan’s youth’s D.hightech devices’
23.Why does science meet the same problem in Japan, the US and Europe?
A.People are satisfied with the convenience hightech devices brings to them.
B.People believe they don’t need to develop their science any more.
C.People think hightech devices destroys the environment.
D.People don’t want to live the modernized life.

There’s nothing sadder than reading about a lost child in the newspaper or seeing the story of a child gone missing on the news.Fortunately for us as parents there is a way to avoid this type of tragedy through GPS tracking for children.Global positioning system technology can make it so that we need not worry about our children being lost as much as we used to in the past.
GPS systems for kids are small devices that can be worn like a pager (呼机),implanted in a watch or attached to the child’s clothing or backpack. It will then deliver information to you about the child’s location at all times providing you with peace of mind. The GPS systems can be programmed to send information in intervals as short as 15 seconds.
You can imagine how much more relaxed you would be when you’re able to log your computer at any time and know within several yards exactly where your child is.Some of the GPS kids units even have a panic button that the child can push to send an immediate alert in case of an emergency. This notification will go both to you and to the GPS tracking service so that authorities can be alerted.
For small children the GPS tracking device can be as small as a watch or pager
- 17 -
and will run on batteries for up to 24 hours before needing to be recharged. For older children you can even place a device in their cars to monitor their driving habits and where they are driving.Personal GPS units for kids are not cheap and the smaller the device the higher the price. Can you really say that anything is too expensive when discussing the safety and wellbeing of your children? In addition to the cost of the device, you will also need to pay a fee to the GPS tracking service. In the world we live in sometimes it is difficult to be safe and these GPS kids systems can provide many parents with added peace of mind.
24.According to the passage, what can we learn about GPS systems for kids?
A.They are devices which can help children recognize the direction.
B.The bigger devices of GPS units for kids cost more.
C.They are small devices through which parents can know where the child is.
D.Children can send information through GPS systems for kids only once a day.
25.The underlined word “notification” in the third paragraph probably means “________”.
A.signal B.plan
C.letter D.machine
26.According to the last paragraph,we can infer GPS systems for kids ________.
A.are very cheap for ordinary people
B.should be made smaller in size
C.need more advanced batteries
D.are good value for money
27.What is the text mainly about?
A.Kids safety problems.
B.Advantages and disadvantages of GPS systems for kids.
C.GPS systems for kids.

Bright red post boxes, the Queen and queuing—what do they all have in common? They are all important parts of British life.At least I thought so.
However, the ability to queue for long periods of time, once believed to be a
- 17 -
traditional characteristic of the British,is no longer tolerated by people in the UK,according to a survey done by British bank Barclays.
Once upon a time, queuing was seen as normal.During World War Ⅱ,everyone had to queue up to receive their daily supply of foods. In fact,if you didn’t stand up and wait in line with all the others,it was seen as uncivilized (不文明的).
The famous English doubledecker buses, with only one entrance, might also help explain why queuing was seen as part of British life.Almost always, there is a queue to get in.
But perhaps the British are tired of being pushed past by the Spanish, the Italian or the French as they queue up to get a table at a restaurant. The people of these other European countries have more than one entrance to their buses, which explains their more relaxed attitude to the queue.
Two minutes is now the longest time most British people are prepared to stand and wait. But could it be that the Internet, which allows us to carry out tasks quickly,is the main reason why British people are no longer prepared to queue?
“Used to buying without delay, customers are even giving up purchases rather than wait their turn,” says Stuart Neal of Barclaycard.“Shoppers are also less likely to queue for long if the item they are buying is of low value.”
Perhaps I will have to replace “queuing” with “impatience” in my list of things I relate to the British.
28.What can we learn about the tradition of queuing in Britain?
A.It was a product of the slow pace of life.
B.It was a long time tradition as old as the Queen.
C.It was considered a symbol of a civilized behavior.
D.It has made the British different from other Europeans.
29.According to the passage, the British gradually stopped queuing because ________.
A.they prefer shopping online
B.they follow the example of foreigners
C.British buses have more than one entrance
D.the Internet has changed their way of life
30.It can be learned from the text that ________.
A.the British get impatient with queuing for long
- 17 -
B.the British have to queue to receive foods
C.the British like to eat in foreign restaurants
D.the British prefer to take doubledecker buses
31.The author’s main purpose of writing the passage is ________.
A.to tell us the influence of the Internet on the British ways of life
B.to compare the cultural differences between Britain and other European countries
C.to talk about the changes in the attitude to queuing in Britain
D.to report his research on the British ways of life

Is losing weight as simple as doing a 15minute writing exercise? In a new study, women who wrote about their most important values, like close relationships or religion, lost more weight over the next few months than women who didn’t.“We have this need to feel selfintegrity,” says Christine Logel of the University of Waterloo.“When something threatens your sense that you’re a good person, like failing a test,we can buffer (减缓) that selfintegrity by reminding ourselves how much we love our children, for example”.
For this study, the researchers recruited 45 female undergraduates,of whom 58% were overweight. Each woman was weighed, and was then given a list of important values, like creativity, music or relationships with friends and family members. Each woman ranked the values in order of how important they were to her. Then half the women were told to write for 15 minutes about the value that was most important to her.The other half,a control group, were told to write about why a value far down on their list might be important to someone else.
The women came back months later to be weighed again.Women who had written about an important value lost an average of 3.41 pounds, while women in the control group gained an average of 2.76 pounds.
“How we feel about ourselves can have a big effect” Logel says.Maybe when one of the women who wrote about an important value went home that night, she felt good about herself and didn’t eat to make herself feel better.Over a few months, that could make a real difference in her life.
32.How can a 15minute writing exercise of important values affect people?
- 17 -
A.They will feel proud of themselves and gain weight gradually.
B.They may feel good about themselves and then eat less than usual.
C.They may continue writing and decide to become a professional writer.
D.They will never have meals at night to make themselves lose weight.
33.What were the females required to do in the study?
A.The overweight women wrote about the value most important to them.
B.Only the control group was given a list of important values.
C.Both groups ranked the values in order of importance to them.
D.Each woman was weighed three times in the process of the study.
34.Which of the following people may lose weight according to the new study?
A.Mary who wrote about her own adventure.
B.Catherine who described her illness in her writing.
C.Shirley who wrote how much she loved her children.
D.Alice who complained her boss in her diary.
35.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A.Women Values Losing Weight B.Losing Weight Is Very Simple
C.Writing Benefits Women a Lot D.Writing Contributes to Losing Weight

36_____ Some people express anger openly in a calm and reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.

44.解析:选A。根据句中的“if there was any sign of it”可知,姐姐每晚都给作者打电话,了解(find out)是否收到礼物了。take out表示“取出”,figure out表示“弄明白”,pick out表示“精心挑选”,都不符合语境。
45.解析:选C。根据下文“We talked about our family”可知,作者和姐姐之间的谈话(conversation)总是从询问包裹开始。
46.解析:选C。根据下文“We talked about”和“Of course we also talked about our jobs.”可知,二十分钟后作者和姐姐仍然在闲谈(chatting)。

54.解析:选D。根据16空后的“I wanted you to have this in time”可知,那个人确信包裹是作者的,所以用believe,选D项。

To start with, it helps us bear our burdens, reduce our tensions as well as get rid of our depressions.A sense of humor can also contribute to a life with more passion. As for us students, those who are humorous are usually equipped with a better attitude towards learning and a quicker mind, which will definitely enhance the learning.
Furthermore, with regard to our interpersonal relationship, conflicts and misunderstandings with others are unavoidable, but humour can help us solve these problems better than angry words, therefore helps us live in harmony with others and cultivates a better friendship.

From where I stand, a person without humour is just like a spring without flowers. It gives fun and interest to life to make it worth living. So we should make an effort to develop our sense of humour.
