Noah Webster, born on October 16, 1758, is known for The American Dictionary of the English Language.  He has been called the “Father of American Scholarship and Education”. His “Blue-Backed Speller” books were used to teach spelling and reading to five generations of American children. But how much do you know about him beyond that?‎ At the age of 16, Noah Webster began attending Yale College. Unfortunately, he spent his four years at Yale during the American Revolutionary War, and, because of food shortages, many of his college classes were held in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Later, he served in the army.‎ Having graduated from Yale in 1778, Webster wanted to continue his education in order to earn his law degree. He had to teach school in order to pay for his education. He set up many small schools that didn't survive, but he was a good teacher because instead of forcing his students to learn, like most teachers did, he rewarded them. ‎ He earned his law degree in 1781, but did not practice law until 1789. Once he started he found the law was not to his liking. Webster did not have much money. ‎ In 1793, Alexander Hamilton lent him $1500 to move to New York City to edit a newspaper. In December, he founded New York 's first daily newspaper, American Minerva, and edited it for four years. For decades, he published textbooks, political essays, a report on some diseases, and newspaper articles for his party, He wrote so much that a modern  list of his published works required 655 pages .‎ Noah Webster died on May 28, 1843 and was buried in the Grove Street Cemetery. 21. What's the main idea of Paragraph l? When the empire broke down, this kind of tourism stopped. ‎ In the early 17th century, the idea of the "Grand Tour" was born. Rich young English people sailed across the English Channel. They visited the most beautiful and important European cities of the time, including Paris in France, and Rome and Venice in Italy. Their tours lasted for two to four years, and the tourists stayed a few weeks or months in each city. The "Grand Tour" was an important part of young people's education-but only for the rich. ‎ In the 18th century, tourism began to change. For example, people in the UK started to visit some towns, such as Bath to "take the waters". They believed that the water there was good for their health. So large and expensive hotels were built in these towns. ‎ In the 19th century, travel became much more popular and faster. When the first railways were built in the 1820s, it was easier for people to travel between towns, so they started to go for holidays at the seaside. Some started to have holidays in the countryside as cities became larger, noisier and dirtier. ‎ Traveling by sea also became faster and safer when the first steamships were built. People began to travel more to faraway countries. ‎ The 20th century saw cars become more and more popular among ordinary people. ‎ 15‎ Planes were made larger, so ticket prices dropped and more people used them. ‎ Thus tourism grew. In 1949, Russian journalist Vladimir Raitz started a company called Horizon Holidays. The company organizes everything-plane tickets, hotel rooms, even food-and tourists pay for it all before they leave home. The package tour (包办旅行) and modern tourism industry was born. ‎ The first travel agency in China was set up as early as 1949. But tourism did not take off until 1978. In 2002, the industry was worth 500 billion yuan and became an important part of China's social development. ‎ ‎25. In the early times, the travelers _______ . ‎ A. all came from China B. were very young and strong ‎ C. had lots of money D. traveled by boat ‎ ‎26. _______ played the most important role in the tourism development. ‎ A. Education     B. Money     C. Transportation    D. People's ideas ‎ ‎27. According to the passage , which of the following is right ?‎ ‎ A. Money played the most important role in the tourism development .‎ B. In the 20 th century, people preferred traveling by sea to traveling by air.‎ ‎ C. China’s tourism did not take off until 1949. ‎ D. In 2002 , the tourism industry became an important part of China’s social development.‎ ‎28. Modern tourism industry was born _______ ‎ A. in 1949     B. in Roman times    ‎ C. in the early 17th century     D. in the 19th century ‎ ‎29.The underlined phrase "take off" means _______ . ‎ A. rise into the air B. develop very fast ‎ C. remove hats and clothes D. bring down the prices ‎ C Trees are useful to man in three important ways: they give him wood and other useful things, they give him cool places, and they help to stop drought and flood.‎ Unluckily, in many parts of the world, man has not found that the third of these 15‎ ‎ points is the most important. Man wants to make money from trees, so he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had. And also, he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees. So the forests slowly disappear.‎ This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even worse: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil---make the rain in ---and also bind(凝固) the soil, thus stopping it from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When all the topsoil is gone, nothing is left but useless desert.‎ ‎30.The most important points of trees to man is ________.‎ A. they help him to make money B. they give him cool ‎ C. they give him wood and other things D. they help him to stop drought and floods ‎31.In many places forests slowly disappear because ________ .‎ A. many trees have been cut down by man ‎ B. new trees are not well looked after ‎ C. man has not paid enough attention to planting trees ‎ D. all the above ‎32.Land becomes desert after all trees are cut down because ________ .‎ A. roots of trees break up the soil ‎ B. there are too many rainfalls C. strong winds bring a lot of sand ‎ D. there are no longer trees to keep the rain and protect the top-soil.‎ ‎ D D Conflict is on the menu tonight at the café La Chope. This evening, as on every Thursday night, psychologist Maud Lehanne is leading two of France’s favorite pastimes, coffee drinking and the “talking cure”. Here they are learning to get 15‎ ‎ in touch with their true feelings. It isn’t always easy. They customers-some thirty Parisians who pay just under $2 (plus drinks) per session-care quick to intellectualize (高谈阔论),slow to open up and connect. “You are forbidden to say ‘one feels,’ or ‘people think’,”Lehane told them. “Say ‘I think,’ ‘Think me’.”‎ A café society where no intellectualizing is allowed? It couldn’t seem more un-French. But Lehanne’s psychology café is about more than knowing oneself: It’s trying to help the city’s troubled neighborhood cafes. Over the years, Parisian cafes have fallen victim to changes in the French lifestyle-longer working hours, a fast food boom and a younger generation’s desire to spend more time at home. Dozens of new theme cafes appear to change the situation. Cafes focused around psychology, history, and engineering are catching on, filling tables well into the evening.‎ ‎33.What are people encouraged to do at the cafe La Chope?‎ A. Learn a new subject B. Keep in touch with friends.‎ C. Show off their knowledge.‎ D. Express their true feelings.‎ ‎34. How are cafes affected by French lifestyle changes?‎ A. They are less frequently visited.‎ B. They stay open for longer hours.‎ C. They have bigger night crowds.‎ D. They start to serve fast food.‎ ‎35. What are theme cafes expected to do?‎ A. Create more jobs.‎ B. Supply better drinks.‎ C. Save the cafe business.‎ D. Serve the neighborhood.‎ 第二节:阅读短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。每小题只有一个最佳选项, 选项中有两项是多余选项。并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。(共5小题;每小题1‎ 15‎ 分,满分5分) ‎ ‎ “Three Apples” changed the world.
