第一节(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)
A
A Swedish man was dug out alive after being snowed in his car on a forest track for two months with no food, police and local media reported on Saturday.
The 45-year-old from southern Sweden was found on Friday, February17, too weak to say more than a few words.
He was found not far from the city of Umea in the north of Sweden by snowmobilers who thought they had come across a ruined car until they dug their way to a window and saw movement inside.
The man, who was lying in the back seat in a sleeping bag, said he had been in the car since December 19.
“Just incredible that he’s alive considering that he had no food, but also since it’s been really cold for some time after Christmas.” a rescue team member told regional daily Vasterbottens-Kuriren, which broke the news.
Ebbe Nyberg, duty officer at the Umea police, said police saw no reason to doubt that the man had been stuck in the car for a very long time.
“We would not make up something like this. The rescue services were on site too and saw the same as us.” he told Vasterbottens-Kuriren.
Umea University Hospital, where the man is recovering after being rescued by police and a rescue team, said in a statement he was doing well considering the circumstances.
10
Doctors at the hospital said humans would normally be able to survive for about four weeks without food. Besides eating snow, the man probably survived by going into a dormant-like(休眠似的)state, physician Stefan Branth told Vasterbottens-Kuriren.
“A bit like a bear that goes to sleep in the winter. Humans can do that.” he said. “He probably had a body temperature of around 31 degrees which the body adjusted to. Due to the low temperature, not much energy was used up.”
“Why the man ended up under the snow in the forest remains unknown,” police said.

Disposing of waste has been a problem since humans started producing it. As more and more people choose to live close together in cities, the waste-disposal problem becomes increasingly difficult.
During the eighteenth century, it was usual for several neighboring towns to get together to select a faraway spot as a trash site. Household rubbish, rotted wood, and old possessions would be transported to the site. Regularly some of the trash was burned and the rest was buried. The unpleasant sights and smells caused no problem because nobody lived close by.
Factories, mills, and other industrial sites also had waste to be disposed of. Those located on rivers often just dumped(倾倒垃圾) the unwanted remains into the water. Others built huge burners with chimneys to deal with the problem.
Several facts make these choices unacceptable to modern society. The first problem is space dumps, which are now called landfills, are most needed in heavily populated areas. Such areas rarely have empty land suitable for this purpose. Property(房地产) is either too expensive or too close to residential(住宅区的) neighborhoods. Long-distance trash transporting has been a common practice but once farm areas are refusing to accept rubbish from elsewhere, cheap land within trucking distance of major city areas is almost nonexistent.
Recycling efforts have become commonplace, and many towns require their people to
10
take part. However, even the most efficient recycling programs can only hope to deal with only about 50 percent of a city’s reusable waste.
45.The most suitable title for this passage would be _______.
A. Places for Disposing Waste B. Waste Pollution Dangers
C. Ways of Getting Rid of Waste D. Waste Disposal Problem

A. Farm areas accept waste from the city in modern society.
B. There is cheap land to bury waste in modern society.
C. Ways to deal with waste in modern society stay the same.
D. It is difficult to find space to bury waste in modern society.
48.The main purpose of writing this article is to _______.
A. draw people’s attention to waste management B. warn people of the pollution dangers
C. call on people to take part in recycling programs D. tell people a better way to get rid of waste
C
In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressure from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: "I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try. " What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth.
Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.
49. What does this passage mainly talk about?
10
A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.
B. Opinions about competition are different among people.
C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.
D. Failures are necessary experiences in competition.
50. Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?
A. It pushes society forward. B. It builds up a sense of duty.
C. It improves personal abilities. D. It encourages individual efforts.
51. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a "desire to fail"?
A. One's worth lies in his performance compared with others.
B. One's success in competition needs great efforts.
C. One's achievement is determined by his particular skills.
D. One's success is based on how hard he has tried.
52. Which point of view may the author agree to?
A. Every effort should be paid back. B. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.
C. Competition should be encouraged. D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.
D
First aid is emergency care for a victim of sudden illness or injury until more skillful medical treatment is available. First aid may save a life or improve certain vital signs including pulse, temperature, a clear airway, and breathing. In minor emergencies, first aid may prevent a victim's condition from worsening and provide relief from pain. First aid must be given as quickly as possible. In the case of the seriously injured, a few minutes can make the difference between complete recovery and loss of life.
First-aid measures depend upon a victim's needs and provider's level of knowledge and skill. Knowing what not to do in an emergency is as important as knowing what to do. Improperly moving a person with a neck injury, for example, can lead to permanent spinal(脊柱的) injury and paralysis(瘫痪).
Despite the variety of injuries possible, several basic rules of first aid apply to all emergencies. The first step is to call for professional medical help. The victim, if conscious, should be reassured that medical aid has been requested, and asked for permission to provide any first aid. Next, assess the scene, asking the injured person's family or friends about details of the injury or illness, any care that may have already been given, and pre-existing conditions such as diabetes(糖尿病) or heart trouble. The victim should be checked for medical bracelet or card that describes special medical conditions. Unless the accident scene becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury, do not move the victim.
First aid requires rapid assessment of victims to determine whether life-threatening conditions exist. One method for assessing a victim's condition is known by ABC, which stands for: Airway, Breathing, and Circulation.
53. First aid may bring about all the following results EXCEPT __________.
A. saving a victim’s life B. preventing a victim’s condition from
10
getting worse
C. relieving a victim from pain D. helping a person avoid sudden illness or injury
54. Before we give first aid to a victim, it is very important for us _________.
A. to remove the ring or bracelet he may be wearing
B. to take him to a hospital at once
C. to make sure what to do and what not to do
D. to refer to all kinds of handbooks on first aid
55. The purpose of the passage is to tell readers __________.
A. the importance of protecting the accident scene B. some basic knowledge about first aid
C. what professional medical help is D. who can give fist aid

Dear Editor-in-Chief,
Congratulations on the 5th anniversary of Global Mirror!
I’m a regular reader of your newspaper. I like it very much mainly for the following two reasons. First, it covers both national and international news so that, by simply turning the pages, I can learn all the important affairs that have happened during the week. Equally attractive are the success stories of world-famous people, which help me understand how a person can work hard to make the world a better place.
As a young student, I suggest that Global Mirror carry articles to guide us in our English learning, and I hope that it will become even more popular.
Sincerely yours, Li Hua
