After all, there is no natural reason why 2,500 people should accidentally shoot themselves each year or why 7,000 should drown or 55,000 die in their cars. No one establishes a fixed number for each type of death. It just happens that they follow a consistent pattern year after year.‎ A few years ago a Canadian psychologist named Gerald Wilde became interested in this phenomenon. He noticed that mortality rates for violent and accidental deaths throughout the Western world have remained the same throughout the whole of the century, despite all the technological advances and increases in safety standards that have happened in that time. Wilde developed a theory called “risk homeostasis”. According to this theory, people naturally live with a certain level of risk. When something is made safer, people will get around the measure in some way to go back to the original level of danger. If, for instance, they are required to wear seat belts, they will - 11 -‎ ‎ feel safer and thus will drive faster, thereby canceling out(抵消)the benefits that the seat belt provides. It appears that we have an innate(天生的)need for danger.‎ In all events, it is becoming clearer that the factors influencing our lifespan(寿命) are far more complex than had been previously thought. It now appears that if you wish to live a long life, it isn’t simply a matter of eating the right foods, not smoking, driving with care etc. You must also have the right attitude. Scientists found that people with a suspicious or mistrustful nature die far more often than people with a sunny character. Looking on the bright side, it seems, can add years to your life span.‎ ‎24. What social scientists have long felt puzzled about is why_______.‎ A. the mortality rate can not be predicted B. the death number remained stable year after year C. a fixed number for each type of death has not come into being D. people lost their lives every year for this or that reason ‎25. In his research, Gerald Wilde finds that technological advances and increases in safety standards_____.‎ A. have helped solve the problem of so high death rate B. have accounted for mortality rates in the past century C. have reduced mortality rates for violent and accidental deaths D. have achieved no effect in bringing down the number of deaths ‎26. According to the theory of “risk homeostasis”, some traffic accidents result from_____ .‎ A. our fast driving B. our innate desire for risk C. our interest in speeding D. our ignorance of seat belt benefits ‎27. Which of the following may contribute to a longer life span?‎ A. Smoking once in a while B. Showing little trust in the communication C. Eating the food low in fat and driving with great care D. Developing an optimistic personality and never losing heart C Night after night, she came to pull the covers up around me and make me feel comfortable in bed, even long after my childhood years. Following her longstanding custom, she would lean down and push my long hair out of the way, then kiss my forehead. ‎ I don’t remember when it first started annoying me — her hands pushing my hair that way. But it did annoy me, for they felt work-worn and rough against my young skin. Finally, one night, I shouted out at her, “Don’t do that anymore — your hands are too rough!” She didn’t say anything in reply. But never again did my mother close out my day with that familiar expression of her love.‎ Time after time, with the passing years, my thoughts returned to that night. By then I missed my mother’s hands, missed her goodnight kiss on my forehead. Sometimes the incident seemed very close, sometimes far away. But always it remained in the back of my mind.‎ - 11 -‎ Well, the years have passed, and I’m not a little girl anymore. Mom is in her mid-seventies, and those hands I once thought to be so rough are still doing things for me and my family. She’s been our doctor, reaching into a first aid kit for the remedy to calm a young girl’s stomach or soothe the boy’s injured knee. She cooks the best fried chicken in the world... gets stains out of blue jeans like I never could...‎ Now, my own children are grown and gone. Mom no longer has Dad, and on special occasions, I find myself drawn next door to spend the night with her. So it was late on Thanksgiving Eve, as I slept in the bedroom of my youth, a familiar hand hesitantly ran across my face to brush the hair from my forehead. Then a kiss, ever so gently, touched my brow. ‎ In my memory, for the thousandth time, I recalled the night my young voice complained, “Don’t do that anymore — your hands are too rough!” Catching Mom’s hand in hand, I blurted out how sorry I was for that night. I thought she’d remember, as I did. But Mom didn’t know what I was talking about. She had forgotten — and forgiven — long ago.‎ That night, I fell asleep with a new appreciation for my gentle mother and her caring hands. And the guilt that I had carried around for so long was nowhere to be found.‎ ‎28. The best title for the passage can be ______.‎ ‎ A. Daughter’s Guilt B. Mother’s Hands ‎ C. Better to Forgive and Forget D. Never too Late to Say Sorry D ‎ Most parents of kids under age 8 don't worry about how much time they spend watching TV or using other media, from computers to smart phones to tablets PCs, according to a new survey that found a child's use of media often reflects how much time parents spend in the similar way.‎ ‎ ¨We generally found that media use is not a source of conflict in the home" for families with young children, Ellen Wartella, a researcher from Northwestem University, told USA Today. She led a survey of 2,326 parents who have children 8 and younger. It found that in 80 percent of families, children's media use was not a problem, with 55 percent “not too" or“ not at all" concerned about it. It also showed parents have more positive than negative feelings about how media consumption affects a child's learning and the development of creativity. The exception is video games, which are viewed more negatively than TV, computers or mobile devices.“Parents - 11 -‎ ‎ rated video games as more likely to have a negative effect on children's school performance, attention time, creativity, social skills, behavior and sleep than any other medium," the researchers said in a news conference about the survey.‎ ‎ ¨The findings exposes a generational shift (转移) in parental attitudes about technology's role in young children's lives," said Wartella.“Today's parents grew up with technology as a central pact of their lives, so they think about it differently than earlier generations of parents, instead of a battle with kids on one side and parents on the other, the use of media and technology has become a family affair. "‎ ‎ The researchers identified three media environments created by parents: media-centric (39 percent of families) , media-moderate (45%)and media-light (16%). Children in media-centric families spend at least three hours more each day watching TV or using computers, video games and tablet PCs don't make parenting easier. And 88 percent of parents say they are most likely to turn to toys or activities to keep their children occupied.Slightly fewer turn to books (79%) and TV(78%).‎ ‎ The survey didn't look at how media affects children. That's a topic that the American Academy of Pediatrics has handled a number of times. The AAP says studies have found too much media use can lead to attention- problems, school difficulties, sleep and eating disorders and being fat. In addition, the Internet and cell phones can provide platforms for illegal and risky behaviors.¨By limiting screen time and offering educational media and non-electronic formats (格式)such as books, newspapers and board games, and watching television with their children, parents can help guide their children's media experience. Putting questionable content into context and teaching kids a700ut advertising contributes to their media literacy (素养) ," it says.‎ ‎ The pediatricians' group says parents should have “screen-free zones" and TV should be turned off during dinner. At most, it recommends children and teens engage with entertainment media for no more than two hours a day and that should be high-quality content. It is important for kids to spend time on outdoor play, reading, hobbies and using their imaginations in free play.“ Kids under 2 should not use television and other entertainment media because their brains are developing quickly and they learn best from direct human interaction," the group says.‎ ‎ An article on screen time by t.he Mayo Clinic also notes problems linked t.o over screen time, including being fat, irregular sleep , behavioral problems , weak school performance , violence and less time for active and creative play.‎ ‎32.Parents have more negative than positive feelings about media consumption like .‎ ‎ A.computers B.smart phones ‎ ‎ C.video games D.tablets PCs ‎33.From the data of the survey, we learn .‎ ‎ A.children in media-centric families are smarter than others ‎ B.children in media-light families spend one hour watching TV ‎ C.more than half of the parents think children's media use was a problem - 11 -‎ ‎ D.media-centric children spend more than three hours each day on media use ‎34.To make parenting easier, most parents probably .‎ ‎ A.try to persuade their children to read books ‎ B.ask their children questions while watching TV ‎ C.allow their children watching TV or using computers ‎ D.turn to toys or activities to keep their children occupied ‎35.Which of the following is a suggestion by the researchers?‎ ‎ A.Media use time for babies under 2 should be limited.‎ ‎ B.Entertainment media use should be high-quality content.‎ ‎ C.Schools should provide more time for active and creative play. ‎ ‎ D.Home media use should provide platforms for illegal and risky behaviors.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ The iPon Generation Today it is common to see people who walk about with colored wires hanging from their ears wherever they go.They move about in their personal bubbles, sometimes unaware of what's happening around them.36 Outside life is shut out.So are you one of them"? Then they had to know 63 stories could be told without words, using only gestures and expressions. To create lifelike scenes, they had to understand perspective, lighting and anatomy. So history painting needed a lot of thought and 64 . (imagine). Large-scale pictures used to be reserved for grand religious or patriotic subjects, but that changed in the 19th century, as artists began creating history paintings based 65 contemporary news stories. One of the first of these was The Raft of the Medusa, inspired by the wreck of 66 French ship in 1816, which showed how art could have a powerful political impact. It presents a scene 67 the survivors of the wreck on a raft littered with bodies try to signal to a distant ship. When they 68 ( rescue ), they told how they had been abandoned by their captain, while he sailed to safety in a lifeboat. Starving, they had to eat each other to survive—though this picture makes 69 look heroic rather than violent. The picture caused a huge outcry. Some people thought the artist meant to criticize the French king, 70 had been involved in appointing the ship's captain.‎ 第四部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)‎ 第一节短文改错(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)‎ ‎ 假定英语课上老师要求同桌之间交换修改作文,请你修改你同桌写的以下作文。 ‎ In modern society, competition is everywhere. No wonder a English philosopher considers competition the source of a series of problem such as frustration and anxiety. Therefore, if we stress cooperation too much, there would be no progress. In my opinion, all are important and necessary. Let’s take the competition at school for example. Even a gifted student won’t make a remarkable progress if he is in a class without competition. That’s because competition, and rather, challenge is a driving force made him go forward. On the other hand, if we don’t cooperate with each other, it’s impossible for us learn from each other. And that’s why most of the great discoveries or inventions in the modern world are the result of cooperation.‎ To conclude, those who laugh last are the people who can successful cope with the relationship between competition and cooperation.‎ 第二节 书面表达 (25分)‎ 你校正在进行“英语论坛周”活动,请以“To Be a Popular Student”为题,就以下三方面提出要成为一名受欢迎学生应具备的素质,用英语写一篇100~120词的短文参加该主题的讨论。‎ ‎1. 对待集体; 2. 对待他人; 3. 对待自己。‎ 注意:短文的开头已给出(不计词数)。‎ To Be a Popular Student To Be a Popular Student, we should be equipped with the following qualities.‎ - 11 -‎ 高三期中考试答案(‎2015-10-29‎)‎ 听力:1-5 CACAA 6-10 CCABC 11-15 BBCAB 16-20 ABBCB (听力训练33)‎ 阅读理解:21-23 ADB 24-27 BDBD 28-31 CADB 32-35 CDDB 36-40 GDFCA 完形填空: 41-45 BACDD 46-50 AACBD 51-55 BCDCA 56-60 BADCD 语法填空:61.hardest 62. Besides taking an active part in class activities, we should work responsibly to build up a good reputation for the team.‎ In addition, students with high popularity are those who show respect, concern, and sympathy for others. So undoubtedly, we should never hesitate to give a hand to those in need.‎ Finally, when it comes to gaining popularity, one thing that can’t be ignored is to be strict with ourselves, making every effort to achieve an all-round development.
