Text 10
When planning a trip, nowadays, people have a choice among many different types of
- 16 -
transport:cars,buses,trains and planes.
The railroad provided the first successful system of mass transportation, and carried crowds of people from one place to another. Now,Americans like to travel by air.The reasons for this are that flying in America is not very expensive and a vast network of airlines and airports makes it possible to reach almost every major American town.Meanwhile, the National Railroad Corporation, known as Amtrak(American Travel Track)is trying its best to compete with the airlines.Trains have their own advantages:they are cheaper, safer, and more comfortable:they offer passengers the possibility to get on and off in the city center.
Those who can't afford either a train or a plane take the bus.Nowadays motor buses have partly replaced railroad passenger services on many local routes in a number of regions.Americans depend mostly on their cars,in which they go to work,go shopping, and even go on vacation. For long distances,a car can carry several passengers much more cheaply than a plane.Nothing is so expressive of the modern American way of life as the motor car.It can carry a person from his own home to his destination directly.

A man was sitting reading his papers when his wife hit him round the head with a frying pan.“What was that for?” the man asked.
The wife replied, “That was for the piece of paper with the name Jenny on it I found in your pocket”. The man then said “When I was at the races last week Jenny was the name of the horse I bet on.” The wife apologized and went on with the housework. Three days later the man was watching TV when his wife hit him on the head with an even bigger frying pan, knocking him unconscious. Upon regaining consciousness the man asked why she had hit again. Wife replied,“Your horse phoned.”
Joke 2:
“Do you believe in life after death?” the boss asked one of his employees.
“Yes, sir,” the new employee replied.
“Well, then, that makes everything just fine,” the boss went on. “After you left early yesterday to go to your grandmother's funeral, she stopped in to see you!”
Joke 3:
“Oh, I am happy to see you,” the little boy said to his grandmother on his mother's side. “Now maybe daddy will do the trick he has been promising us.” The grandmother was curious. “What trick is that?” she asked.

Canadian English is the variety of English spoken in Canada. English, instead of French, is the first language, or “mother tongue”, of approximately 24 million Canadians (77%), and more than 28 million (86%) are fluent in the language.
Canadian English contains elements of British English and American English in its vocabulary, as well as Canadian native language. In many areas, speech is influenced by French, and there are notable local variations. Canada has very little dialect diversity compared to the United States. Canadian English and American English are sometimes classified together as North American
- 16 -
English. Canadian English spelling is largely a combination of British and American conventions(惯例).
The term “Canadian English” is first proved in a speech by the Reverend A. Constable Geikie in a speech to the Canadian Institute in 1857. Geikie, a Scottishborn Canadian, reflected the Anglocentric attitude that would be common in Canada for the next hundred years when he referred to the language as “a ruined dialect,” in comparison to what he considered the proper English spoken by immigrants from Britain.
Canadian English is the product of four waves of immigration and settlement over a period of almost two centuries. The first large wave of long Englishspeaking settlement in Canada, and linguistically the most important, was the arrival of Loyalists escaping from the American Revolution, chiefly from the MidAtlantic states—as such, Canadian English is believed by some scholars to have come from northern American English. Recent studies suggest that Canadian English has been developing features of its own since the early 19th century. The second wave from Britain and Ireland was encouraged to settle in Canada after the War of 1812 by the governors of Canada. Waves of immigration from around the globe peaking in 1910 and 1960 had a lesser influence.

I want to tell you a story about a wonderful, strong lady. She is my Mother. When I was a little girl—I am the middle child by the way—I was kind of distant from my Mom. I had a couple of grandparents that no doubt loved me very much, but controlled my feelings for my Mother. I always felt like she didn't love me, although she tried with all her power to make me see she did. Anyway, later on in life my parents divorced and we all went our separate ways so to speak. I was

only 15, but got in with the wrong crowd, got pregnant, married, divorced, all in about two years. Mom was going through a pain all her own, but still managed to try and pick me up and brush me off. I wouldn't have it;_I sank even deeper. I know this has to be hard for a Mom to see, and even harder for her to let it happen, so that one day I might hit the bottom and have to swim back up.
But luckily in the end this is what happened: after many years of struggle, now I am happily married with my 14yearold daughter with me, and a new baby. I owe this all to my Mother. She and my father remarried each other some years ago, and she is 51 years old and still a police officer in our hometown. And I do mean a police officer. She works the streets in her squad car (抢险队)with the best of them. So not only is she strong enough to protect the community, but to protect her children as well.
My Mom also supports many victims' (受害者) rights groups online, and helps make the public awake of missing children through the use of her site. She is a wonderful lady, and is loved by all who meet her. She is truly My Guardian Angel on Earth. My Mom never expects anything for herself, so this would be a wonderful surprise if she could for once sit back and enjoy being “The One.”

If you like curry then you must be delighted to learn that scientists in Ireland have found a certain type of curry spice(香料、调味品) can kill off cancer cells.
The chemical—curcumin—can be found in the bright yellow curry spice turmeric. It's long thought to have healing powers. Tests by a team at the Cork Cancer Research Centre show it can destroy gullet cancer cells in the lab.
The cancer cells began to digest themselves after the curcumin triggered lethal (引发致命的)cell death signals. And this process started within 24 hours.
Curry dishes have cancer beating ingredients. Dr Lesley Walker, director of cancer information at Cancer Research UK, said: “This is an interesting research which opens up the possibility that natural chemicals found in turmeric could be developed into new treatments for oesophageal cancer.”
Cancers of the oesophagus kill more than 500,000 people across the world each year. It's the sixth most common cause of cancer death in the UK. The tumours are especially deadly, with fiveyear survival rates of just 12 to 31 percent.
However, Dr Sharon McKenna, lead researcher on the study says turmeric is broken down in the blood once ingested.
A way is needed to be found to ensure it stayed in the circulatory system for longer to give it time to kill cancer cells.
Asked if people with oesophageal cancer should now start eating lots of curries, she said turmeric was just one spice that was found in curry.
“A curry contains a lot of other heavy spices that would not necessarily be good for you at all,” she said. “When you eat it, you are not applying it directly to the cancer cells as we were in the laboratory.”
So there's no excuse to binge on(猛吃猛喝) curry meals after you've read this. Maintaining a balanced diet remains our best choice to a healthy lifestyle.

Dear_Connie,
How_are_you_going_now?_I'm_sorry_to_hear_that_you_feel_ashamed_of_your_figure._Here_is_some_advice_I_want_to_give_you.
To keep fit, it is necessary for you to have a healthy diet. You'd better have different foods, especially fruits and vegetables, and drink milk as often as possible. It's not a good idea to take weightloss pills for a slim and attractive figure. It is not worth it. Having enough sleep together with regular exercise such as walking and riding is also beneficial to your health. Besides, you should take an active part in school sports. In my opinion, it is not a good habit to spend too much time reading, watching TV or chatting online. Always be active and keep optimistic and don't be discouraged (disappointed/frustrated/upset) whenever you meet with trouble.
