(12)‎ A Pride and Prejudice for the Modern Woman Let us imagine how Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen's most famous work, might be updated, 200 years on.‎ Austen's popularity is rooted in her intelligence. But today she would certainly have had a very different life, as would her characters. Here's my own suggestion. . .‎ It is a truth finally and universally acknowledged that a single woman with brains deserves to have equal opportunities to men, however disadvantaged she may feel by sexism.‎ ‎" My dear husband," said his hopeful wife one day, " have you heard that the local store, standing empty for so long, is taken over by a bright young businesswoman?"‎ Her dull and indifferent (漠不关心的) husband replied that he had not. "But it is, it is," she replied excitedly. Mr Dull-Husband made no reply.‎ ‎"Don't you want to know her plans?" she cried with some impatience.‎ ‎"Well, clearly you think it matters to your silly little head. .. so I'd better listen. "‎ ‎"Well, my dear, the rumour (传言) is that she has already set up a string of successful businesses in northern England, though how a woman can know anything about that is beyond me. She will move in herself next month. " "What is her name?" "Bingley. " ‎ ‎"Is she married or single?" ‎ ‎"What a question! And none of your business. But her coming will be a fine thing for our five boys. " "How so? How can it possibly affect them? "‎ ‎"My dear love; those lazy boys need something to wake them up. There are bound to be jobs going. "‎ ‎" Is that her point in settling here? Surely as a woman she has simply taken a fancy to the place. "‎ ‎" Nonsense, my love, how little you've noticed the world has changed. She's got a first-rate degree and some sort of business qualification, I'm told. She surely needs one of our boys! Perhaps you might give her a call. "‎ ‎" Me? No. Perhaps you can take an interest. You still have your looks, after all. She may even offer you a job. " "Oh, that's not likely. These new chances belong to the younger generation. But now you mention it, I think I'll go along all the same. "‎ And Mrs Bennet went along. That was 10 years ago. She is now managing director of a FTSE-listed company. ‎ ‎... It would remain the case, of course, that Mrs Bennet would be one of very few women on the company board, that her salary would be lower than her male colleagues, her bonus of a more "female" dimension and her lifespan (年限) among the city's business leaders shorter than theirs. Still, she'd no doubt have enjoyed Davos—and might even have hobnobbed (攀谈) with influential figures.‎ ‎67. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?‎ A. Austen was born 200 years ago.‎ B. Austen rewrote Pride and Prejudice.‎ C. Austen's success lies in her wisdom.‎ D. Austen's updated work gains popularity.‎ ‎68. The underlined part in the passage suggests that Mrs Bennet ____.‎ - 6 -‎ A. had mixed feelings of admiration and surprise about Bingley B. felt kind of worried and doubtful about Bingley C. was extremely anxious to meet Bingley D. had a great curiosity about Bingley ‎69. In the eyes of Mrs Bennet, Bingley surely needed one of their boys to ____.‎ A. get married to B. work for her C. help her move in D. take over her store ‎70. What does the writer intend to tell us?‎ A. Women with brains can also be as successful as men.‎ B. Women have to pay a high price for success.‎ C. A judgment must be made free from prejudice.‎ D. Sex discrimination still exists nowadays.‎ B When I was a boy,my father told me that he could do anything that he wanted to do . Dad said that he wanted to be the first to develop color prints in our city, and so he did. When I was 16,Dad looked closely at the violin I played and announced that he wanted to make one.He read about violin making, and then became a violin-maker at the age of 43.He bought the tools and materials, opened a small store and set Mom up as the shopkeeper, while he worked at a local company. He retired from the company 17 years later and continued to make violins and other instruments. Dad often guessed why the Stradivarius violins sounded so beautiful. Some experts claimed that it was the unique varnish(油漆)that gave those instruments their beautiful sound.Dad argued that chemists could analyze the varnish------if that were the answer. One of Dad's friends asked him once which kind of wood was used to make violins. When Dad explained that the top was made of spruce, his friend said that he had an old piece of spruce Dad might be interested in. He worked for the next 12 months making a violin from the wood that his friend had given him. It proved to be a superior violin and it would become Dad's masterpiece. He was convinced that the secret of the Stradivarius sound was in the wood itself. Later, the instrument was stolen.Dad's spirit was broken by the robbery, and he stopped making instruments. But he kept the music shop until he was 80 years old, selling guitars and violins. My father has been gone for 14 years now.The violin has been missing for more than25 years.Somewhere a musician is playing a late-20tb-centruy violin with an excellent tone. The owner today may never understand why this ordinary-looking violin sounds so much like a Stradivarius. 1. How long did the author’s father live after the violin was stolen ?‎ ‎ A. About 11 years B. About 14 years C. About 25 years D. About 80 years ‎ ‎ ‎ C ‎(2014北京卷)‎ Multitasking What is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed (展示) at the entrance? Or the soft background music?‎ But have you ever notice the smell? Unless it is bad, the answer is likely to be no. But while a shop’s scent may not be outstanding compared with sightsand sounds, it is certainly there. And it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase.‎ A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance, via scent machines. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers’ intension to purchase increased by 80 percent.‎ When it comes to the best shopping streets in Pairs, scent is just as important to a brand’s success as the quality of its window displays and goods on slaes. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be.‎ Some years ago,the focus for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales assistants’ disproving attitude and don’t-touch-what-you-can’t-afford displays. Now the rise of electronic commerce (e-commerce) has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores (实体店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this.‎ Now a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut (椰子) scent in the swimsuit section. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store’s windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.‎ ‎67. According to the passage, what is an increasingly powerful tool in the success of some brand store?‎ A. Friendly assistant. B. Unique scents.‎ C. Soft background music D. attractive window display.‎ ‎68. E-shops are mentioned in the passage to _______ .‎ A. show the advantages of brick-and-mortar stores B. urge shop assistants to change their attitude C. push stores to use sights and sounds D. introduce the rise of e-commerce ‎69. The underlined word “destination” in Paragraph 5 means _______ .‎ A. a platform that exhibts goods - 6 -‎ B. a spot where travelers like to stay C.a place where customers love to go D. a target that a store expects to meet ‎70. The main purpose of the passage is to ______ .‎ A. compare and evaluate B. examine and assess C. argue and discuss D.inform and explain D Multitasking People who multitask all the time may be the worst at doing two things at once, a new research suggests. The findings, based on performances and self-evaluation by about 275 college students, indicate that many people multitask not out of a desire to increase productivity, but because they are easily distracted (分心) and can’t focus on one activity. And “those people turn out to be the worst at handling different things,” said David Sanbonmatsu, a psychologist at the University‎ of ‎Utah.‎ Sanbonmatsu and his colleagues gave the students a set of tests and asked them to report how often they multitasked, how good they thought they were at it, and how sensation-seeking (寻求刺激) or imperative (冲动)‎ they were. They then evaluated the participants’ multitasking ability with a tricky mental task that required the students to do simple mathematical calculations while remembering a set of letters.‎ Not surprisingly, the scientists said, most people thought they were better than average at multitasking, and those who thought they were better at it were more likely to report using a cellphone while driving or viewing multiple kinds of media at once. But those who frequently deal with many things at the same time were found to perform the worst at the actual multitasking test. They also were more likely to admit to sensation-seeking and impulsive behavior, which connects with how easily people get bored and distracted.‎ ‎“People multitask not because it’s going to lead to greater productivity, but because they’re distractible, and they get sucked into things that are not as important.” Sanbonmatsu said.‎ Adam Gazzaley, a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, who was not a member of the research group, said one limitation of the study was that it couldn’t find out whether people who start out less focused toward multitasking or whether people’s recognizing and understanding abilities change as a result of multitasking.‎ The findings do suggest, however, why the sensation-seeker who multitask the most may enjoy risky distracted driving. “People who are multitasking are generally less sensitive to risky situations.” said Paul Atchley, another researcher not in the group. “This may partly explain why people go in for these situations even though they’re dangerous.”‎ ‎67. The research led by Sanbonmatsu indicates that people who multitask .‎ A. seek high productivity constantly B. prefer handling different things when getting bored C. are more focused when doing many things at a time D. have the poorest results in doing various things at the same time ‎68. When Sanbonmatsu and his colleagues conducted their research, they .‎ A. assessed the multitasking ability of the students - 6 -‎ B. evaluated the academic achievements of the students C. analyzed the effects of the participants’ tricky mental tasks D. measured the changes of the students’ understanding ability ‎69. According to Sanbonmatsu, people multitask because of their _.‎ A. limited power in calculation B. interests in doing things differently C. inability to concentrate on one task D. impulsive desire to try new things ‎70. From the last paragraph, we can learn that multitaskers usually .‎ A. drive very skillfully B. go in for different tasks C. fail to react quickly to potential dangers D. refuse to explain the reasons for their behavior A 【要点综述】文章巧妙套用世界名著《傲慢与偏见》章节,独辟蹊径夹叙夹议,深刻评述性别歧视依然存在的这一社会现实。 Austen’s popularity is rooted in her intelligence可知奥斯丁的成功在于她的智慧,故选C。 There are bound to be jobs going可以推断Mrs. A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance, via scent machines. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores (实体店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. 故A正确。‎ ‎69. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but rather a - 6 -‎ ‎ destination. ‎ ‎【长难句解析】‎ One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers’ intension to purchase increased by 80 percent.‎ ‎【翻译】一家运动品牌公司曾经报道,当他们首先引进香味进入商店的时候,顾客们的购物欲望增加了百分之80.‎ ‎【分析】本句中动词reported后面含有一个宾语从句that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers’ intension to purchase increased by 80 percent. 最后一段当中的“people who are multitasking are generally less sensitive to riskysituation” 为正确答案出处,故选C。‎ - 6 -‎
