I was offered a job that looked interesting in a part of the world I’d never been to before. I’d also long had an interest in Africa, so I decided it was time to find out the reality. A small amount of research showed that in more than 40 years since gaining independence, Cameroon has been a peaceful country with no wars. Not only were there no wars but Cameroon is a food exporter to the region.‎ ‎ Now, after three years, I can say that these have been the healthiest years of my life! No malaria or any of the other frightening diseases you read about when Africa is mentioned .The worst thing that ever happened to me was a bout of food poisoning-once.‎ ‎ So what is it like to teach here? Well not surprisingly, not so different from anywhere else. Most students come to us with a bit of English in their heads. Cameroon is a bilingual country with French and English as official languages, while there are also close to 200 local ethnic languages in a country of 16 million people. French is the dominant language, spoken by about eighty percent of the population.‎ ‎ The local school system is very traditional and somewhat strict. Perhaps not surprisingly when there can be up to 150 students in the classroom ( of which maybe 30 have the books, and there are probably seats for 70).Like anywhere, students appreciate it if you know a bit about their country, and not just Roger Milla (top scorer of the 1990 World Cup, in case you’re wondering). It helps if you know the names of the ten provinces, know who the first president was, or can say a word in a local language.‎ ‎ So in conclusion: Cameroon isn’t just football. Nor is it war, poverty and disease. It’s just life and people, like anywhere else.‎ ‎21. On hearing the writer’s decision, most people__________.‎ A.admired him - 8 -‎ B.considered it as a joke C.didn’t understand him D.laughed at him ‎22. According to the passage, Cameroon is__________.‎ A.peaceful after liberation B.a country full of diseases C.a poor country, especially lack of food D.quite different from others in education ‎23. What can we infer from the passage?‎ A. Food export may lead to many frightening diseases.‎ B.Most students in Cameroon do not need books.‎ C.Cameroon is not as bad as people commonly believed.‎ D.There must be a lot of people suffering from food poisoning.‎ ‎24. Which language is spoken by about eighty percent of the population in Cameroon?‎ A. local dialect B. French C. An ethnic language D. English B After a terrible electrical accident, which caused him to become both blind and deaf, the whole world became completely dark and quiet for Robert Edwards for almost ten years. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live.‎ One hot summer afternoon, he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once. He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet, but he was struck by the lightning. Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up some 20 minutes later lying face down in muddy water at the base of the tree. He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes, he could hardly believe what he saw: a plough and a wall. When Mrs. Edwards came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help, he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years. ‎ The news of Robert regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread, and many doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a convincing answer as to why this should have happened. The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since Robert lost his sight and hearing as a result of a sudden shock, perhaps, the only way for him to regain them was by another sudden shock. ‎ ‎25.The reason for Robert’s attempts to kill himself was that _________.‎ A. a terrible traffic accident happened to him B. he had to live in a dark and silent world C. he was struck by the lightning once more D. nobody in the world cared about him ‎26.What was Robert doing when he was struck by the lightning?‎ A. Taking a walk with a stick.‎ ‎ B. Sheltering from the rain under a tree. ‎ ‎ C. Driving a car. ‎ D. Lying on the ground.‎ ‎27.We can infer from the text that ________.‎ - 8 -‎ A. Robert’s wife sent for doctors immediately after the shock B. many doctors came because Robert was badly injured C. there was no exact explanation for Robert’s recovery D. a sudden injury in the head led to Robert’s recovery ‎28.What’s the best title of the whole passage?‎ A. A Terrible Electrical Accident B. Robert Edwards and His Wife C. What a Sudden Shock D. An Unforgettable Experience ‎ C Some people view a bad situation as a disaster. It’s not. It’s an opportunity. Once your old world collapses(倒塌), you can recover and rebuild. Now you have the chance to start fresh and do things more intelligently. I built my business on an unstable structure. I kept it going for years, but the business collapsed last year. I had to leave my office, selling off all the furniture and equipment. I got kicked out of my apartment because I couldn’t pay the rent. I couldn’t pay my bills or debt. I declared bankruptcy.(破产)‎ For years there was the worry that this might happen if I didn’t keep straining(尽力) to keep the business going. And my worries were right. What I worried about would happen did happen .But you know what? Going through that experience wasn’t really so bad. It was interesting. Some of it was actually pretty easy. Throughout most of it, I felt increasing relief and a renewed sense of freedom and possibility. All the old baggage was gone. No more office. Fewer possessions. Fewer obligations. No more debt. Most of all , no more straining. Life became a lot easier.‎ I got a cheaper and smaller apartment. I became debt-free. I learned to live within my means. Those were actually good things. The others were just feelings. The reality wasn’t actually painful. After that, I kept going with the same business but completely changed the business model. I avoided the earlier mistakes, and that business recovered just fine and worked great. It was profitable every year from then on. But I had to go through the collapse first to reach that point.‎ If you’ve been feeling out of control with your current work or lifestyle, and you’re currently straining to keep it going ,consider letting it go. Try allowing the old world to collapse, many or all of your fears and worries might actually come to pass, but that’s ok. You don’t have to keep the old world alive. If it keeps falling apart on you ,let it collapse. Experiencing the collapse isn’t as bad as fearing the collapse ‎ 29. The author regards the collapse of the old world as an opportunity to_____ ‎ ‎ A. get a new world started in better ways ‎ B. turn to others for help to save ourselves ‎ C. sum up the failure and make up for the mistakes ‎ D. bury ourselves in the disasters and then recover ourselves ‎ 30. In the author’s opinion, the old baggage in Paragraph 2 included______‎ ‎ A. the freedom and possibility of refreshing himself ‎ B. the experience he learned from his former failure ‎ C. the old possessions and the invisible pressure ‎ D. the business knowledge and skills he got from various media ‎ 31. What did the author do after his business failed last year?‎ ‎ A. He cleverly transformed his business model.‎ ‎ B. He started another completely different business. ‎ - 8 -‎ ‎ C. He received further training about doing business at college ‎ D. He borrowed some money from his friends and relatives to pay off his debts.‎ ‎ 32. According to the author, when our work or life is out of our control,we can_____. ‎ ‎ A. prevent it from falling apart on us.‎ ‎ B. set it free or just let it completely break down ‎ C. keep straining and go on with determination ‎ ‎ D. keep it alive with the courage to change it again ‎ D A lot of people are afraid of spiders(蜘蛛). One would even avoid walking in grass . And if he thought the spider was in the room or house, he would have to leave the house for days. In fact, fear of spiders is a type of disorder called specific phobia(恐惧症), one of the most common anxiety disorders, which annoys about 7% of the population, a study says. Common specific phobias also include fear of blood, needles, snakes, flying and enclosed spaces.‎ The Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine tried the “exposure Therapy(暴露疗法)”, which was small, done on 12 adults, but all of them held or petted the spider afterward. One participant celebrated by getting a spider tattoo(纹身) after having been unable to even look at photos of spiders.‎ This is the first study to document the immediate and long-term brain changes after treatment and to illustrate how the brain recognizes long-term to reduce fear as a result of the therapy. Every one would come in thinking: I am going to be the one who can’t do this . There is no way ,”Haunter ,author of the study ,says “They were impressed by the end.” ‎ In therapy lasting two or three hours, which is different for each person, the participants were taught that troublesome thoughts about spiders were untrue.” “They thought the spiders might be capable of jumping out of the cage and on to them,” Hauner says.‎ Exposure therapy gets its name from exposing a patient to what he fears, says Todd, research assistant professor: “A lot of it about dispelling people’s beliefs. You can get significant changes in a short period of time”.‎ ‎33. Which of the following is true about the people with “specific phobia?”‎ A. They don’t dare to walk in grass B. New restaurants, galleries, temples and new architecture…These places are homes for people like us who live and work there. How would you want visitors to behave in your own home? Think about it. 36 There are many ways of doing this without sacrificing our own holiday.‎ Do your homework. 37 Guides will help you when you get to site, but is that the best place to go? Is it popular only because the one-day tourist can see it easily or because it is really a worthwhile place to visit? You’d better check it out.‎ ‎ 38 Don’t go to your hotels for meals. Walk around, even if in the streets closest to your hotel. Eat in local restaurants .Talk to the locals. Learn a few in the local language and use them. You will surely get a smile from the hotel staff and street sellers .‎ Help preserve the sites. Most of the sites you visit may be visited by millions of people a year, so care needs to be taken to allow others to enjoy them as well. Some of these monuments are so old and fragile that they are sensitive to the touch of hands or bags and shows. 39 This way, you don’t encourage the use of those plastic bags that fly all over many sites.‎ And here’s the big one—good manners are nearly universal. 40 If that doesn’t sound like you, then give the world a break and stay home.‎ A. Experience the place.‎ B. Always have a cloth bag with you .‎ C. Read up on the places you want to visit.‎ D. Try to buy something from the local stores.‎ E. good tourist is polite, positive and eco-sensitive.‎ F. We’ve cleaned up after ourselves and taken only good memories.‎ G. Although they have equal degrees of health and wealth and the other comforts of life, one becomes happy, 41 becomes unhappy. This 42 from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, and events, and the resulting effects upon their minds.‎ The people who are to be happy 43 their attention to the conveniences of things, the pleasant parts of conversation, the well-prepared dishes, the goodness of the wines, and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the 44 things. They are, 45 , continually unsatisfied. By their words, they complain about the pleasure of society, offend(冒犯) many people, and 46 themselves disagreeable (不受欢迎的) everywhere. If this turn of mind were founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up 47 by imitation (模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown 48 its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it 49 its bad effects on their interests and tastes. Those people offend many others, nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most 52 politeness and respect. This 53 puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting 54 advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step 55 speak a word to favor their hopes. If they cause themselves public objections (反对), no one will 56 or excuse them, and many 57 join to criticize their wrongdoings. These people should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, 58 worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, 59 will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, 60 when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.‎ ‎41.A. other B. another C. the other D. one another ‎42.A. comes B. rises C. raises D. becomes ‎ ‎43.A. draw B. focus C. attract D. pay ‎44.A. same B. opposite C. happy D. funny ‎45.A. however B. furthermore C. otherwise D. therefore ‎46.A. let B. force C. make D. have ‎47.A. originally B. finally C. normally D. likely ‎48.A. as B. to C. for D. at ‎49.A. convinced B. convincing C. agree D. realize ‎50.A. agree B. enjoy C. praise D. help ‎51.A.results B. reasons C. causes D. phenomena ‎52.A. usual B. common C. average D. normal ‎53.A. hardly B. luckily C. seriously D. often ‎54.A. some B. other C. few D. no ‎55.A. and B. but C. so D. or ‎56.A. defend B. offend C. intend D. attend ‎57.A. shall B. must C. can D. will ‎58.A. with B. without C. but for D. in case of ‎ ‎59.A. one B. they C. it D. that ‎60.A. specially B kindly C. hardly D. especially ‎ 第二节 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)‎ 阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(不多于3个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。‎ I can well remember that I was once asked to deliver a speech titled A Real Test in My Life before the whole class at the age of 9 !
