The Brown Bear
My wife Laura and I were on the beach, with three of our children, taking pictures of shore birds near our home in Alaska when we spotted a bear. The bear was thin and small, moving aimlessly.
Just a few minutes later, I heard my daughter shouting, “Dad! The bear is right behind us!” An aggressive bear will usually rush forward to frighten away its enemy but would suddenly stop at the last minute. This one was silent and its ears pinned back----the sign of an animal that is going in for the kill. And it was a cold April day. The bear behaved abnormally, probably because of hunger.
I held my camera tripod(三脚架)in both hands to form a barrier(屏障)as the bear rushed into me. Its huge head was level with my chest and shoulders, and the tripod stuck across its mouth. It bit down and I found myself supporting its weight. I knew I would not be able to hold it for long.
Even so, this was a fight I had to win: I was all that stood between the bear and my family, who would stand little chance of running faster than a brown bear.
The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod. I raised my left arm to protect my face; the beast held tightly on the tripod and pressed it into my side. My arm could not move, and I sensed that my bones were going to break.
Drawing back my free hand, I struck the bear as hard as I could for five or six times. The bear opened its mouth and I grasped its fur, trying to push it away. I was actually wrestling(扭打)with the bear at this point. Then, as suddenly as it begun, the fight ended. The bear moved back towards the forest, before returning for another attack---the first time I felt panic.
12
Obviously satisfied that we caused no further threat, the bear moved off, destroying a fence as it went. My arm was injured, but the result for us could hardly have been better. I’m proud that my family remained clear-headed when panic could have led to a very different outcome.
21. The brown bear approached the family in order to ________.
A. catch shore birds B. protect the children
C. start an attack D. set up a barrier for itself
22. The bear finally went away after it _______.
A. got injured B. felt safe C. found some food D. took away the camera
23. The writer and his family survived mainly due to their ______.
A. pride B. calmness C. patience D. cautiousness
24. What does the underlined sentence mean in the last paragraph?
A. The result for us was the best. B. The result for us was good.
C. The result for us was the worst. D. The result for us was bad.

The Americans have been voted the world’s “funniest nationality” —the one“ best at making people laugh” —in a global poll(民意调查), which also names the Germans the “least funny” nationality and the British“ not as funny as they think” .
30, 000 people across 15 countries were asked to name both the“ funniest” and“ least funny” nationality in a poll conducted by Badoo. com, the world’s largest social network for meeting new people, with 119 million users worldwide.
The Americans were voted the funniest nationality, ahead of the Spanish—the funniest Europeans—in second, Italians in third and British in seventh.
The voting for the “ least funny” nationality confirmed the view of America’s Mark Twain that “ a German joke is no laughing matter” . The Germans won, ahead of the Russians and Turks. The stereotype of German humourlessness is believed to come from their reputation for efficiency, punctuality(守时)and rationality(理性). Examples of German jokes include: “Yesterday, I met my friend Horst at the hospital. He’d swallowed a sponge(海绵). He says it doesn’t hurt but he’s always thirsty. ”
“When we meet someone new, one of the first things we notice is whether he or she makes us laugh”, says Lloyd Price, Badoo’s Marketing Director. “America is a worthy poll winner”, says Price. “It’s the world’s only comedy superpower.”
The British pride themselves on their humor but learn from the poll that they’re not as funny as they think. They placed just seventh of 15—behind the Brazilians, French and Mexicans.
25. According to the poll, which is the right order from the funniest nationality
12
to the least funny one?
A. Americans, Spanish, French, Russians, British.
B. Germans, Italians, French, British, Americans.
C. British, Russians, Brazilians, Spanish, Americans.
D. Americans, Spanish, Italians, Brazilians, Germans.
26. According to the passage we know .
A. Mark Twain thought Germans should learn Americans’ humor
B. There are 15 nationalities involved in the poll
C. Price thinks little of Americans
D. Price doesn’t take the poll seriously
27. What is the author’s purpose of telling us a German joke?
A. The author wants to prove that Germans are not humorous at all.
B. The author wants to confirm Germans are not serious.
C. The author wants to show that Germans are good at telling jokes.
D. The author just wants to say that swallowing a sponge is no harm.
C
There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.
I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed and sat down to read my Economics.
It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive; I decided to wave back.
From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful.
12
When my uncle arrived with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug . I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.
I looked forward to the return journey.
28. The author expected the train trip to be________ .
A. dull B. pleasant C. exciting D. adventurous
29. What did the author remember most fondly of her train trip?
A. The mountains along the way. B. The friendly country people.
C. The crowds of people in the streets. D. The simple lunch served on the train.
30. Which can best take the place of the word "relish" in the second paragraph?
A. choose B. carry on C. prepare for D. enjoy
31. Where was the writer going?
A. Johore Baru B. The Causeway. C. Butterworth D. Singapore
