I remembered that when I was a little child, I used to look for Sunday of the week. Yes, I was so looking forward for an adventure.
Now, I still have a strong affinity for buses. I used to wonder where those gigantic buses finally stopped at. On sunshine Sundays, that's my adventure times. He took me to the bus stop. Time passed, while I was growing impatient, he was smiling, as he always does.
It was really not that easy to get on a bus as often as we do today. I was so worried that the bus driver would have missed us. I waved my hands so high with all my strength. I looked hopefully at him. He didn't move at all. He was still standing. It seemed that the late and infrequent coming of the bus wasn't any trouble to him at all.
He took my hand. We managed to find seats on the upper deck. I was so excited. Only sitting besides the windows made me happy. Looking at the rewinding buildings, streets and people through windows from a higher ground were so much fun. Then, he was sitting peacefully by me and whispered to me where the bus finally would stop, I was curious about what would be the next stop of our destination as much as what really means something to him.
That is me. I know now. I am all he cares. He wants me to be happy, as he

It's true that teens don't get enough sleep, but changing the school starting time would have a chaotic effect and throw everyone off balance.
Scientists have shown that teens are more active later at night than children and adults, so most teens are probably staying up late for whatever reasons. “The researchers measured the presence of the sleep-promoting hormone (荷尔蒙) in teenagers' saliva (唾液) at different time of the day.” They learned that the hormone levels rise later at night than they do in children and adults—and remain at a higher level later in the morning. Measuring the hormone in the saliva is a good way to show that most teens have sleep problems, but changing school schedules isn't the best way to fix this. Most people arguing against changing school schedules would say that it would only cause teens to stay up and wake up later, thus leaving them with the same problem.
The biggest problem schools would come across from changing their schedules would be the after-school sports and job conflicts students and teachers would meet. “Teachers reported that students were more alert, and research showed that after-school sports and jobs would suffer.” Students in that area might have been able to deal with less time for jobs and sports somehow, but some of them have practice and earlier plans that would become conflicted if this change were to occur. Most students rarely have time to play a sport and do homework before 9 or 10 o'clock. Opening schools later may have worked for some areas, but the reality is often very different.

Anyone who reads a book and then goes to see a movie based on that book generally leaves the movie feeling a little disappointed. Why might this be? Both books and movies serve the purpose of entertainment. Both books and movies offer characters and plots. And,both books and movies provide a setting for a story. Books, however, offer a more attractive and complex form of entertainment than movies.
Although movies are entertaining to watch, books have advantages over them. First, books, in comparison to movies, can more easily seize the depths of characters and create a complex setting through the use of rich description. Books leave it up to the reader to interpret, imagine, and recreate the story in his or her own mind. However, movies are action packed and provide lots of visual stimuli(视觉刺激);still, it is the movie not the viewer that interprets the characters, plot and setting. Second, books are not limited to time. A writer can write as much or as little as necessary in order to create and tell a story. Movies, on the other hand, are limited to an hour and a half to two hours of entertaining time before the audience (观众) begins to get restless. Last, reading is an intellectual form of entertainment. Readers can improve their level of reading and vocabulary in a harmless healthy and pleasurable way. Movies, on the other hand, are not as complex and entertaining as books, and they leave nothing to interpret. Therefore, the advantages and entertainment value of books outweigh (胜过) those of a movie.
To conclude, books, through interpretation, help the reader develop a sense of relationship to the characters and the story itself, but a movie strictly
- 13 -
entertains. Books are a better form of entertainment than movies.
28.According to the author, ________.
A. movies often make people disappointed
B. more and more people prefer books to movies

29.The underlined word “intellectual” in the second paragraph may relate to ________.

A. movies can easily seize the depths of characters

The number of speakers of English in Shakespeare's time is estimated(估计) to have been about five million. Today it is estimated that some 260 million people speak it as a native language, mainly in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the standard varieties of English found in these areas, there are a great many regional and social varieties of the language as well as various levels of usage that are employed both in its spoken and written forms.
In fact, it is impossible to estimate the number of people in the world who have acquired an adequate(足够的) working knowledge of English in addition to their own languages. The purpose for English learning and the situations in which such learning takes place are so varied that it is difficult to explain and still more difficult to judge what forms an adequate working knowledge for each situation.
The main reason for the widespread demand for English is its presentday importance as a world language. Besides serving the indefinite needs of its native speakers, English is a language in which some of important works in science, technology, and other fields are being produced, and not always by native speakers. It is widely used for such purposes as meteorological and airport communications, international
- 13 -
conferences, and the spread of information over the radio and television networks of many nations. It is a language of wider communication for a number of developing countries, especially former British colonies. Many of these countries have multilingual populations and need a language for internal communication in such matters as government, commerce, industry, law and education as well as for international communication and for entrance to the scientific and technological developments in the West.
32.What would be the best title for this passage?
A.The Difficulties of Learning English
B.International Communications
C.The Standard Varieties of English

B.There are some 260 million native speakers of English in the world.
C.It is almost impossible to estimate the number of people with an adequate working knowledge of English.
D.People learn English for a variety of reasons.
34.According to the passage, what is the main reason for the widespread use of English?
A.It was popular during Shakespeare's time.
B.It is used in former British colonies.
C.It serves the needs of its native speakers.
D.It is a world language that is used for international communication.
35.What forms an adequate working knowledge of English?
A.The ability to read a newspaper.
B.It is difficult to judge because it differs for each situation.

D.Being a native speaker.

Quiet background music used to be called “elevator (电梯) music” because we often heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new name “Muzak”. About one-third of the people in America listen to “Muzak” every day. The music plays for 15 minutes at a time, with short pauses in between. It is always more lively between ten and eleven in the morning, and between three and four in the afternoon, when people are more tired. __37__

__40__ They say it's boring to hear the same songs all the time. But other people enjoy hearing Muzak in public places. They say it helps them relax and feel calm. One way or another, Muzak affects everyone. Some farmers even say their cows give more milk when they hear Muzak!
