It was a late Wednesday night when the dreading phone call reached our home. I sat up, somehow terrified, so I could hear the phone call better. To my surprise, I heard my mom burst into tears. “Get the car, Dean! Andrea has been in a car accident.”
We ran every stop sign on the way to the hospital and our tires screeched around every corner. We got to the hospital, but were not allowed to see Andrea. The next morning, after wearing masks, we were allowed to go to the ICU to see Andrea. Well, the least I could say was that everything was injured in her body and she lost all of her memories. It was a fatal accident.
Over the next two months, I lived more at the hospital than I did at my house. I watched as Andrea worked so hard to gain back everyday motor skills. She never once complained or pitied herself; her determined spirit was shining through. After two weeks in the ICU and two months of the regular hospital treatment, Andrea was able to come home. She missed several months of school, so it was hard for her to catch up. Andrea had tasks to accomplish, and no matter how hard it was, she stuck with them until the job was done. Though busy with dealing with pain and therapy, she always found time to love and play with me.
I’ll never forget the impact that this incident made on my life. I admire her strong-willed personality and her determined spirit. Today she is perfectly normal, despite the scars and the pins holding her leg in place. I couldn’t ask for a better sister, hero, or best friend.

THURSDAY, July 9 (Health Day News) — A new study that found that a lower calorie diet slowed the aging process in monkeys could be the best proof yet that restricted diets might do the same for humans.
“The big question in aging research is, ‘Will caloric restriction in species closely related to humans slow aging?’” said Richard Weindruch, senior author of a paper appearing in the July 10 issue of Science. This is the first clear demonstration that, in a primate species, we’ re inducing a slowdown of the aging process — showing increased survival, resistance to disease, less brain atrophy and less muscle loss.
“This predicts humans would respond similarly,” added Weindruch, professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin and an investigator at the Veterans Hospital in Madison. Another expert noted that, despite some highly publicized studies in certain species, the link between restricted eating and longer lifespan has been far from proven.
“The idea that dietary restriction extends lifespan in all species is not true. Many strains of rats and mice do not respond. In some strains, it’ s actually deleterious,” explained Felipe Sierra, director of the biology of aging program at the US National Institute on Aging (NIA), which supported the new study. “The fact that it doesn’t work in some mice but it does seem to work in monkeys is surprising and it gives us hope.”
But there’s a larger question: how to change humans’ increasingly careless eating habits. “This finding doesn’t give me hope that humans are going to go into dietary restriction,” added Marianne Grant, a registered dietitian at Texas A&M Health Science Center Coastal Bend Health Education Center in Corpus Christi.
71. The underlined word “restricted” means “________”.
A. limited B. satisfied C. reserved D. fascinated
72. Which of the following statements about Weindruch is true?
A. Adequate sleep is another way to reduce the speed of aging process.
B. This experiment indicates restricted diets could extend humans’ lifespan.
C. The experiment was a failure in some species such as mice.
D. The experiment which had been tested on humans got a great success.
73. According to Felipe Sierra’ s idea, we know that________.
A. the restricted diets experiment really had no distinct effect on rats and mice
B. humans are finding new ways to slow down the aging process of all the species
C. the experiment is unnecessary to be carried on because of the response of the mice
D. the experiment confirmed that restricted diets extend lifespan in all species
74. It can be inferred from the underlined sentence that ________.
A. the result of the experiment shows that humans are not pigging out(大吃特吃)nowadays
B. nowadays humans are turning unhealthy diets into lower calorie diets
C. how to change humans’ careless eating habits is a long way to go
D. the experiment changed humans’ increasingly careless eating habits
75. The author most likely wrote this text to________.
A. compare the two experiments on rats and monkeys
B. illustrate the data from the research
C. call on people to pay attention to their daily diets
D. introduce a lively debate to amuse the reader

For thousands of years comets have been a mystery to man. They travel across the sky very fast and have a bright “tail” of burning gas. The comet Tempel 1 has an orbit(轨道) far outside the orbit of the furthest planet in our solar system, Pluto. It has been there for 4.6 billion years, 133 million kilometers from Earth. Last week a little American spacecraft crashed into Tempel 1. The spacecraft had a camera and it took a photograph of the comet every minute before it finally crashed into its surface.
The space mission to Tempel 1 cost $335 million and was called Deep Impact. The spacecraft was travelling at 37,000 kilometers per hour when it hit the comet and the crash completely destroyed the spacecraft. But before it hit the comet, the spacecraft took some amazing photographs. The last one was a close-up picture which the spacecraft took just 3 seconds before it crashed into the comet.
“Right now we have lost one spacecraft,” said a delighted NASA engineer. Deep Impact was like a American Independence Day fireworks display. It took many years to plan and ended in an enormous explosion.
The spacecraft which crashed into the comet was made of copper and was the size of a washing machine. It was dropped from a mothership into the path of the comet and the mothership then photographed the cloud of ice, dust and organic chemicals that rose from the surface of the comet after the crash.
The crash completely destroyed the spacecraft but nothing really happened to the comet: experts believe that the crash slowed the comet down by no more than 1/10,000 of a millimeter a second. The aim of the mission was to study for the first time the interior of a comet.
The mothership was 480 km from the explosion and observed the crash and the explosion with instruments for 800 seconds. Seven satellites, including the Hubble space telescope, watched the moment of drama, and over the next day and night about 50 telescopes on Earth were watching the distant comet.
76. How many hours did it take for the spacecraft from the earth to touch the comet Tempel 1?
A. About 2,500 B. About 3,500 C. About 4,500 D. About 5,500
77. Which of the following shows the possible orbits and positions of the comet Tempel 1?
S=solar P=Pluto T= Tempel
78. Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined word in Paragraph 5?
A. position. B. relation. C. inside. D. distance.
79. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. The name of the space mission is called Deep Impact.
B. Deep Impact was a fantastic success but the scientist regretted losing a spaceship.
C. The crash didn’t have much effect on Tempel 1.
D. The aim of the mission was to study the interior of a comet.
80. The author’s main purpose in writing the passage is to ____________.
A. inform people the discovery of a new comet B. show the power of America in space.
C. introduce the knowledge of comets D. introduce an experiment

You might dream of fluency in this or that language, and maybe you’ve already achieved fluency in a foreign language. ____81____.
Fluency, like all abstract terms, has no universal meaning. Each individual must determine what the term means. ____82____.
Perfect fluency means knowing every word you encounter, speaking quickly, clearly and easily and having no accent. ____83____. You aren’t familiar with every word of your native language, and sometimes you have to search for the right word, even in your mother tongue.
Quick fluency is the type of fluency you see in advertisements, because “Master a Language in Two Months!” sounds way catchier than “Fluency in Twenty Years!” ____84____. It is
possible to achieve quick fluency, but the fluency achieved after such a short time frame will be a very thin, superficial fluency.
____85____. Native-like fluency means that you generally know all the same words that a native knows and can speak at the same pace with the same amount of ease as a native speaker. You will likely have an accent, but as long as your conversation partner can understand you, it doesn’t matter.
Literary fluency is like graduating from native-like to educated-native-like fluency. It focuses on the more intellectual(知识性的) side of a language: indulging in literature, attending university, composing song lyrics, etc.
There are a ton of other things that fluency could potentially(可能地) be, but that’s up to you to figure out.
A. It sounds too good to be true.
B. However, Nobody is “perfectly fluent” in any language.

参考范文:
The novel The Million Pound Banknote was written by Mark Twain, a great American writer. Through his humorous and sarcastic language, Mark Twain successfully depicted an unbelievable adventure of Henry Adams, a penniless American in London.
Two rich men in London have a bet on Henry and want to see what will become of him a month later if they give him a million pound banknote which can’t be cashed for even a penny. A month later, Henry isn’t starved nor arrested, but becomes a millionaire dramatically. What’s more, he even wins the love of a pretty lady.
What impresses me most is that in the story, Henry’s note is not even spent, only exhibited for the eyes of others as a symbol of wealth. He cannot even prove that the bank note is his own but still fools everyone. But on second thought, maybe it is not Henry, but people’s crazy love for money, that fools the world.
