In a society such as the United States or Canada, which has many national, religious and cultural differences, people highly value individualism--the differences among people. Teachers place a lot of importance on the qualities that make each student special. The educational systems in these countries show these values. Students do not memorize all possible basic knowledge. Instead, they work individually and find answers by themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age, students learn to form their own ideas and opinions. In most Asian societies, by contrast, the people have the same language, history and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of the orient reflects society’s belief in group goals and purposes rather than individualism. Children in China, Japan and Korea often work together and help one another on assignments. There are advantages and disadvantages of both systems of education. For example, one advantage of the system in Japan is that students there learn much more about math, physics, biology and chemistry than American students by the end of high school. They also study more hours each day and more days each year than North Americans do. The system is difficult, but it prepares students for a society that values discipline and self-control. There is, however, a disadvantage. Memorization is ‎ an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information that they have memorized. The advantage of the educational system in North America, on the other hand, is that students learn to think for themselves. The system prepares them for a society that values creative ideas. There is, however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from school, they haven’t memorized as many basic rules and facts as students in other countries have. ‎ ‎21. The reason why American teachers attach much importance to individualism is that _________.‎ A. they are required to do so B. their students do not memorize information C. the United States is a country of many cultures D. their students work individually ‎22. Which of the following statements applies to Asian methods of education?‎ A. Each child in a classroom draws a different picture.‎ B. Students have to find information themselves.‎ C. Students are prepared for a society that values discipline.‎ D. Teachers serve as a guide in discussion.‎ ‎23. From the facts, we can infer that ______ .‎ A. Asian students are more likely to do better in teamwork than American students B. Chinese students are more hard-working in their studies than Mexican students C. The Western educational system is much better than the Eastern educational system D. The Eastern educational system is as difficult as the Western educational system B Many of us may be eating food containing GM(转基因的) ingredients without realizing it. Are GM foods safe for people? Can they help solve the poverty problem? They have been the subjects of a hot debate. This debate is related to increasing challenges from rising climatic change, population growth, urbanization, and natural resource consumption. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, food production needs to increase by 60 percent by 2050 in order to feed 9 billion people. Scientists and policymakers are searching for effective ways to gain nutritious food, for today and future. Unlike previous agricultural methods (such as the Green Revolution), GM crops are to fight food safety and poverty challenges. ‎ ‎ The great expansion of GM crop varieties over the last two decades can be seen easily. The total area devoted to GM crops has increased 100 times from 1.7 million hectares in 1996 to 170 million hectares in 2012. Developing countries now grow more GM crops than developed countries (in terms of area), largely driven by Brazil’s rapid adoption of GM crops. China is home to about 4 percent of the total global area devoted to GM crops. Beans, corn, and cotton are main global GM crops, while China’s focus is on cotton, papaya, and poplar. Recently, a scientific study shows that GM crops are safe for people and the environment. According to a 2010 report on the safety of GM crops by the EU, “the main conclusion to be drawn from the efforts of more than 130 research projects, covering a period of more than 25 years of research, and involving more than 500 research groups, is that biology methods, are not more risky than traditional planting technologies, for example.” Other international and national scientific bodies, such as the World Health Organization, have reached the same conclusion. ‎ ‎24. As for GM crops, what do people mainly focus on ?‎ A. Food production. B. Food nutrition.‎ C. Food safety. D. Food variety.‎ ‎25. What does Paragraph 3 talk about?‎ A. More GM crops in developing countries.‎ B. Less GM crops in developed countries.‎ C. Rapid adoption of GM crops in Brazil.‎ D. The expansion of GM crop varieties of the world.‎ ‎26. From a recent scientific study, we can infer that______.‎ A. traditional planting technologies are more risky B. the safety of GM crops has been proved in many ways C. the safety of GM crops was reported by the EU in 2010‎ D. present GM crops are safe for people and the environment ‎27. What’s the writer’s attitude towards GM crops?‎ A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Unknown. D. Indifferent.‎ C The day before yesterday, I had the pleasure of visiting with Deputy Superintendent Pedro Martinez, Principal Neddy Alvarez and her staff at Western High School, located in the Clark County School District, in Las Vegas. The school undertook a comprehensive effort to completely transform the culture of the school and added a motivated group of talented teachers. Western altered(改变) the ‎ school day to add opportunities for students to get additional credits toward graduation and created smaller learning groups. As part of these comprehensive changes, the school’s leadership also focused on four main reforms to transform their school.‎ First, improvements started with the change in the relationship between the school and students to create a caring atmosphere at the school. Using the “Capturing Kids’ Hearts” strategies, school leadership and teachers began building a trusting environment and students and families described seeing changes aimed at improving student outcomes and ensuring the success of every student. The school day was altered to add more options for students to obtain additional credits toward graduation. Students and teachers were grouped into “houses,” so that smaller groups of teachers and counselors(辅导员)could create one-on-one relationships with students. Teachers and counselors said that the altered school day provides time to address student’s individual concerns and develop individualized learning plans to put every student on a path to graduation.‎ The school also made changes to encourage parents to support school and encourage real dialogues between parents and the teachers and leaders at Western. Funded in part through the United Way, the school created a family engagement center to get parents more involved in their children’s education, particularly parents of English language learners. Parents like Ally Gaona and Martha Mendez told me that they had a voice and the tools to engage in their children’s learning and that they recognize that the main responsibility for their children’s learning must rest with the parents. ‎ Parents were passionate about these positive changes and said that these changes signaled to the entire community that the school was serious about family engagement.‎ ‎28.What is the main purpose of the passage?‎ A. To attract parents and students to the school.‎ B. To talk about the school reforms.‎ C. To introduce the school programs.‎ D. To introduce the relationship between the school and the students.‎ ‎29.How many main reforms are mentioned in the passage?‎ A. Two B. Three C. Four D. Five ‎30.Students and teachers were grouped into “houses” in order to ___.‎ A. provide time to address student’s individual concerns. ‎ B. add more options for students to obtain additional credits toward graduation..‎ C. create one-on-one relationships with students.‎ D. develop individualized learning plans to put every student on a path to graduation.‎ ‎31.Which statement is right according to the passage? ‎ A. All the parents were engaged in the reforms.‎ B. The reforms intended to improve student outcomes and ensure the success of every student.‎ C. The school asked parents to donate their credits.‎ D. The school was serious about family and community engagement.‎ D Dream research offers many theories---but there is still no definitive answer to the question. History is full of cases where dreams have been a pathway to creativity and discovery. A striking example is provided by Dr. Otto Loewi, a pharmacologist (药理学家) and winner of a Nobel Prize. Loewi had spent years studying the chemical transmission of nerve impulses (脉搏). A tremendous breakthrough in his research came when he dreamed of an experiment three nights in a row. The first two nights he woke up and wrote down the experiment quickly and untidily on paper. But the next morning, he couldn’t tell what the notes meant. On the third night, he got up after having the dream. This time, instead of making notes he went straight to his laboratory and performed the important experiment. Loewi later said that if the experiment had occurred to him while awake he would have rejected it.‎ ‎ Loewi’s experiment gives some insight into using dreams to produce creative solutions. Nervous feelings are reduced during dreaming, which may be especially useful in solving problems that require a fresh point of view.‎ ‎ Being able to take advantage of dreams for solving is improved if you“set” yourself before retiring. Before you go to bed, try to think intently about a problem you wish to solve. Bury yourself in the problem by stating it clearly and reviewing all relevant information. Then use the suggestions listed in the previous section to catch your dreams. Although this method is not guaranteed to produce a novel solution or a new insight, it is certain to be an adventure. About half of a group of college students using the method for a week recalled a dream that helped them solve a personal problem.‎ ‎32. The main idea of this passage is that _________.‎ ‎ A. very little is really known about the meaning of dreams ‎ B. it is possible to“catch”one’s dreams by planning before going to sleep ‎ C. dreams can be useful in producing creative solutions to one’s problems ‎ D. Loewi’s experiment helped in the study of transmission of nerve impulses ‎33. The first paragraph is mainly organized by _________.‎ ‎ A. classifying types of experiments ‎ B. summarizing the work of one researcher ‎ C. comparing and exploring historical cases ‎ D. telling in time order about one man’s research ‎34. If Loewi had thought of the experiment while awake, he would have _________.‎ ‎ A. asked someone else to do it B. thought it was a bad idea ‎ C. tried it out on his own D. thought it was a wise idea ‎35. The author probably thinks that _________.‎ ‎ A. nervous feelings may stop someone thinking of useful ideas ‎ B. dreaming is of very little value to most people ‎ C. Loewi should not have conducted his experiment ‎ D. college students should not try out dream experiments ‎ There a few key tips will help you effectively present your work and your ideas in the professional world.‎ ‎1. ____36____‎ Probably the most important aspect of a presentation is what you do in advance. Breathe and relax ‎ During the actual presentation, it is important to remember to breathe and relax. No doubt every Senior 3 student wishes to be successful in the National College Entrance Examination. Yet what should we do in order to achieve success? Here are some suggestions.‎ First, it’s very important to have a right attitude, for a normal state of mind and self-confidence not only helps us to relax but also enables us to overcome difficulties bravely. Meanwhile, we should have a definite goal and a correct estimation of ourselves. Only in this way will we not be easily pleased or disappointed with what we have known and done. Besides, we’d better sometimes talk with our parents, teachers or classmates, who may help us out when we are in trouble. Finally, striking a proper balance between study and rest keeps us energetic and a healthy diet is useful as well.‎ With these done, I think we can greatly improve our performance.‎ Yours,‎ Zhang Ping ‎(Text 1)‎ M: May I borrow your phone? None is new to me. (18)In the evening, everyone is assigned different tasks to get dinner ready. Yesterday, I was in charge of preparing the hot dogs, but I accidentally dropped them in the fire. The other kids are always laughing at me about it. (19)At night, we sit around a campfire and tell stories. That's the most interesting moment to me. But one night while trying to find more sticks for the fire, I almost got lost in the forest. ‎ Well, today is another day and I will go home the day after tomorrow. In a society such as the United States or Canada, which has many national, religious and cultural differences, Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of the orient reflects society’s belief in group goals and purposes rather than individualism. Children in China, Japan and Korea often work together and help one another on assignments以及 The advantage of the educational system in North America, on the other hand, is that students learn to think for themselves. 根据第一段Are GM(转基因的) foods safe for people? The great expansion of GM crop varieties over the last two decades can be seen easily. Recently, a scientific study shows that GM crops are safe for people and the environment可知这个调查研究主要是想告诉人们转基因食品对人类和环境都是安全的,故选B。 Recently, a scientific study shows that GM crops are safe for people and the environment.
