There have been a lot of castles built in Britain over the centuries. They range from the more famous and better preserved castles such as Windsor Castle and the Tower of London, to those less famous and a little less well looked after, such as a personal favourite of mine Peveril Castle, that can be found in the village of Castleton in Derbyshire.
Although the Romans brought stone working skills with them to Britain when they invaded (入侵) and built stone forts(堡垒) across the country, the Anglo-Saxon people, who settled in what is now England after the Romans left, largely dismissed their style of building in favour of wooden structures. It is not until the Norman conquest of 1066 that castles in the truest sense of the word began to appear in Britain, when they were built as places of refuge(避难所)for what was an invading force, a strategy used again in later centuries during England’s invasions of
Wales and Scotland.
Some of the best castles to visit in Britain are built on the borderlands where England meets with Wales or Scotland, a memento (纪念品) of the English——Norman expansionist policy of the middle age. These are some of the most remarkable looking castles to be found in the country, dominating the landscapes they inhabit(栖息).
Entry to most of the castles run by English Heritage, Historic Scotland and Cadw is reasonably priced, but if you are intending to visit lots of castles it might be worth your while joining one of the heritage groups, which one would depend on which area you will be in. It is worth bearing in mind that if you join any of these three groups you will be able to get half priced entry into any of the properties run by the other two. Needless to say not all castles are run by heritage (遗产) trusts, some of the better preserved are still in use and are either owned privately or by the State, many of these are still open to visitors, but they may be a bit more expensive.

The 115-year-old prestigious Oxford Dictionary will now include popular new Chinese terms like “shanzhai” “youtiao” and “fangnu”, as part of the modern Chinese language.
As China plays a more and more important role in the world economy, the Chinese language is forever evolving, attracting more attention from people who want to understand this ancient yet vibrant (充满生气的) language.
For instance, the word “shanzhai” is used to describe the countless knockoffs (名牌仿制品) of iPhones or designer bags imprinted with Louis Vuitton logos.
Another new term in the new edition is the word “fangnu”, or a “mortgage (按揭) slave” —a term used to describe the phenomenon in large cities whereby well-educated youth complain of a miserable existence due to the heavy burden of a home mortgage.
All these new or often fashionable terms can be found in the new Oxford English-Chinese,
Chinese-English dictionary that was unveiled in the recently concluded Beijing International Book Fair last week.
The dictionary now is available for retail sales since the beginning of this month. This
dictionary is the largest single volume English-Chinese, Chinese-English dictionary and contains 670,000 words and phrases after five years of preparation.Sixty editors from the Oxford University Press and its partner in China—the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press—worked together on the project. According to Julie Kleeman, the dictionary’s chief editor, most of the firm’s editors were Chinese, while about one fourth were native-English speakers.
“We don’t want to make it florid (过分花哨的), we want it to be modern and conversational…many of the words in the present dictionary are no longer in use,” said Kleeman. “The need for studying Chinese by foreigners today is totally different from decades ago…Precise, native and practical—that is our core advantage.”
Kleeman said newer publications updates will be available only for the online version as language often changes too quickly for book versions to keep pace. The online version will also offer a Chinese phonetic pronunciation guide. The online version, allowing access via different platforms from the PC to the iPad, will be ready “as soon as possible”, Kleeman said.

A few cups of green tea each day may help prevent heart disease, Greek researchers said on Wednesday. A study published in the European Journal of Cardiovascular (心血管的) Prevention showed further evidence of the potential health benefits from tea already linked to a reduced risk of a range of cancers and other conditions.
The study showed that green tea improves blood flow and the ability of arteries (动脉) to relax, said Charalambos Vlachopoulos, an expert at the Athens Medical School in Greece who worked on the study.
Other studies have shown that black tea also has benefits for cardiovascular health.
The Greek team said they believed green tea might be even better because it had higher quantities of beneficial substances called flavonoids (类黄酮)-some of which are lost in the
oxidation (氧化) process that black tea undergoes.
Flavonoids are also found in cocoa, tomatoes and grapes. "A couple of cups a day would probably be good for people," Vlachopoulos said. "This is the first study to show these effects for green tea."
The researchers gave 14 healthy volunteers either green tea, coffee or hot water and then measured the function of endothelial cells (内皮细胞).These cells help relax arteries and ease blood flow. "What is important is these effects are evident within 30 minutes, "Vlachopoulos said.
The measurements taken 30, 90 and 120 minutes following consumption showed an almost immediate benefit among people who had drunk green tea, he said. While the researchers looked only at a short-term effect, Vlachopoulos said the team's studies suggest the protection is long-lasting.
"Green tea is consumed less in the Western world than black tea, but it could be more beneficial," he said.

M: Yes, I like to go listening to some music. At present my major purpose is to learn from others.
W: Do you like classical music or pop?
M: I like both. How do you spend your spare time then, Lily?
W: Playing the piano is my favourite activity.
M: Our hobbies are similar to each other. I hope we can often exchange experience together.
W: So do I, but I’m weak in the theory of music.
M: Me, too. Would you like to go with me to my uncle? He’s a professor of music.
W: I’m glad to go with you. I would ask him for his advice.

You may think that America is a free country, and Americans kiss their friends. Well, it is. But if you kiss the wrong person, you might get into trouble. This is what happened to Jack, a six— year— old primary pupil.
Who did he kiss? He kissed a girl on the cheek in school. They were in the same class. However, a teacher saw it and told the headmaster, who thought that the boy should be punished.
Jack was told to leave his classroom and stay in another classroom by himself. When Jack’s mother knew this, she was very angry. She wanted the headmaster to tell her why the school should punish her son for kissing another six — year — old. “The girl asked him to kiss her and he did this only to show friendship. What’s wrong with this?” she said.
The headmaster thinks that a boy kissing a girl is wrong, even though they are only six years old. “It is stated clearly in the school handbook. It is unwelcome behaviour,”the headmaster said.
