He found a cold storage room in a building, set up a used typewriter and settled down to work.‎ ‎ After a year or so, however, Alex began to doubt himself. He found it was difficult to earn his living by selling what he wrote. But Alex determined to put his dream to the test—even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the shadowland (虚幻世界) of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.‎ One day Alex got a call,“We need an assistant, and we’re paying $‎6,000 a year.” $6,000 was real money in 1960. It would enable Alex to get a nice apartment ,a used car and more. Besides, he could write in his spare time. As the dollars were dancing in Alex’s head, something cleared his senses. He had dreamed of being a writer--full time. “Thanks, but no,” Alex said firmly and swiftly, “I’m going to stick it out and write.”‎ After Alex got off the phone, he pulled out everything he had: two cans of vegetables and 18 cents. Alex put the cans and cents into a paper bag, saying to himself, “There’s everything you’ve made of yourself so far. I’m not sure I ever felt so low.”‎ Finally his work was published in 1970.Instantly he had the kind of fame and success that few writers ever experience. The shadows had turned into focus of attention.‎ Then one day, Alex found a box filled with things he had owned years before. Inside was a paper bag with two cans and 18 cents. Suddenly he pictured himself working in that cold storage room. It reminds Alex, and anyone with a dream, of the courage and persistence it takes to stay the course in the shadowland.‎ ‎4. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.‎ The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind is situation, for example, ‎ family problem, the death of loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year. The third kind of loneliness is the most serious. Unlike the second type, chronic (the opposite of “temporary”) usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and becoming close to others. However, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.‎ Psychologists agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person’s social contacts, for example, friends, family members, co-workers, etc. We depend on various people for different reasons. For instance, our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lonely people may have many social contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their popularity.‎ Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart disease, while temporary and situational loneliness can be a sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.‎ ‎8. How would you treat temporary loneliness according to the passage? ________.‎ A.  Just ignore it                    B. Talk to friends   ‎ C. Go to see a doctor                    D. Ask your teachers for guidance ‎9. Why do psychologists want to help chronically lonely people? ________‎ A. Chronic loneliness can cause family problems.‎ B. Chronic loneliness can not be overcome.‎ C. Chronic loneliness can cause serious illness. ‎ D. Chronic loneliness is incurable.‎ ‎10. Loneliness is divided according to _____.‎ A. different seasons when it appears                B. different people it happens to  ‎ C. the time it lasts D. the places where it appears ‎11. What is the best title for the passage? ________‎ A.  Loneliness and diseases           B. Three kinds of loneliness  ‎ C. Loneliness and social contacts      D. Chronic loneliness D ‎ It is difficult for doctors to help a person with a damaged brain. Without enough blood, the brain lives for only three to five minutes. More often the doctors can' t fix the damage. Sometimes they are afraid to try something to help because it is dangerous to work on the brain. The doctors might make the person worse if he operates on the brain.‎ Dr. Robert White, a famous professor and doctor, thinks he knows a way to help. He thinks doctors should make the brain very cold. If it is very cold, the brain can live without blood for 30 minutes. This gives the doctor a longer time to do something for the brain.‎ Dr. White tried his idea on 13 monkeys. First he taught them to do different jobs, then he operated on them. He made the monkeys' blood go through a machine. The machine cooled the blood. Then the machine sent the blood back to the monkeys' brains. When the brain' s temperature was 10°C, Dr. White stopped the blood to the brain. After 30 minutes he turned the blood back on. He warmed the blood again. After their operations the monkeys were like they had been before. They were healthy and busy. Each one could still do the jobs the doctor had taught them.‎ ‎12.The biggest difficulty in operating on the damaged brain is that _______.‎ A. the time is too short for doctors B. the patients are often too nervous C. the damage is extremely hard to fix D. the blood-cooling machine might break down ‎13.The brain operation was made possible mainly by _______.‎ A. taking the blood out of the brain B. trying the operation on monkeys first ‎ C. having the blood go through a machine D. lowering the brain' s temperature ‎14.With Dr. White' s new idea, the operation on the damaged brain _______.‎ A. can last as long as 30 minutes B. can keep the brain' s blood warm ‎ C. can keep the patient' s brain healthy D. can help monkeys do different jobs ‎15.What is the right order of the steps in the operation?‎ a. send the cooled blood back to the brain b. stop the blood to the brain c. have the blood cooled down d. operate on the brain A. a,b,c,d B. c,a,b,d C. c, b, d, a D. b, c, d, a[来源:学。科。网]‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中的两项为多余选项。‎ Most of us lead a busy life. 16 We think, “If I reached my goal, then I would be happy”, or “If I could get a better job, then I would enjoy life.” But why not enjoy life right now?‎ Firstly, take time to notice and appreciate the beauty in your own surroundings. 17 “There is a great big world of wonder and beauty around us!” And as Brodersen explains,“Look for the beauty of the sunrise and of a friend’s smile that brightens your day. Open your eyes to see the beauty you might not normally see. Doing so helps to cheer you up.”‎ Secondly, taking time to experience some simple pleasures also can bring joy to your heart and ease your stress. Take me for example. 18 One universal simple pleasure is finding things that make you laugh. Make time to laugh every day.‎ Thirdly, don’t take your family and friends for granted. Rich, rewarding relationships add greatly to the enjoyment of life. When you think of someone, why not call, e-mail or write them? 19 As Wayne Lawton explains, “Invest time in relationships. Remove the attitude, what’s in it for me? Happiness is found in putting other’s interests, desires and concerns ahead of our own whenever possible. Selfishness is a dead-end street.” 20 .‎ A.
