If you cannot travel the world，why not travel the Internet? Geoguessr is a new，online travel game，which is easy to play，but nearly impossible to win．Geoguessr uses images from Street View from the technology company Google，whose cameras have been busy taking photographs around the world．After looking at an image，you guess where the photograph was taken．
How to Play the Game
Images can be searched broadly by continent，country or city．The program shows an image of a place and a map of the world．You can zoom(放大)in or out of images．Or turn it around in circles．Images move forward and backward，and up and down to identify locations．When you think you know where the photo was taken，click on the Google map to place your marker. You get five chances to guess the location．After the fifth one，you see a map showing your guesses，the correct locations，and the number of points you earned．The mix of scenery is part of the fun and 1eaming．
Helpful Hints
Here are a few suggestions to help you identify the places．Look around and see if you can find anything to show the local language．For example，if both French and English．are on a billboard，Canada might be a good guess．Look closely at the plants to see what the latitude(纬 度)might be．Palm trees may mean a more tropical climate．Make a note of whether the cars drive on the
right or the left side of the road．If cars are driving on the left，that narrows your guesses．
Geoguessr can be played on a computer or a mobile device．The more you play the game， the better you will get at geography．Be careful，the game can get very addictive．The good news is that Geoguessr is free and you're unlikely to run out of places to see!

Growing up in the United States as all Indian girl，I was strongly attracted by the idea of wearing a nose ring．When I learned that this tradition came from India，I sought parental approval．To my surprise my mother asked me to talk to her after I learned the underlying significance of this age-old custom．Surprised and a little disappointed，I nevertheless agreed.
I once believed that traditions were handed down through generations and to question them was regarded as disrespect to something holy．This particular custom has existed in India for centuries：girls get their noses pierced(穿透)primarily as they come of age or during their wedding ceremony．I took up the challenge to reach a decision．
I started looking for authentic sources that could help me understand the background of nose piercing．That summer while visiting India，I began my quest．My friend's great-grandmother enlightened me about the shocking facts underlying this tradition．She told me of a farmer who had acquired a group of cattle．He realized he could pierce their noses，slipping giant hoops(箍)through them so he could control and guide them．This practice was soon adopted by his
village elders as part of the wedding ceremony：the nose piercing would symbolize a man’s control over his wife．This tradition showed that a woman needed to be“guided and protected”by a man! The most common nose rings are golden ones with complex designs to hide the cruel reality of contro1．
I could not honestly keep up a tradition that demeans(贬低)a woman’s status in society, branding her as the property of a man．Learning how the custom arose completely changed my thinking about nose rings as fashion statements．Then I made my decision：I did not want my nose pierced．After all，all I quest for is self-transformation and personal liberation．

At the end of the spring semester in May，students taking Georgia Tech’s online Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence course received some surprising news．Jill Watson，one of the nine teaching assistants(TAs)that had helped them finish the challenging course for the past five months was not a ‘‘she’’ but an “it”—an intelligent robot!
Watson is the brainchild of Ashok Goel，who teaches the popular online course．The Professor of Computer and Cognitive Science in the School of Interactive Computing came up with the idea as a way to deal with the number of questions posed by students in the online forums(论坛)．According to Goel，every time the course is offered，the 300 or so students that enroll post over 10，000 questions．The questions are often repetitive．This led Goel to wonder if a smart robot would handle the questions which require standard responses—things like dates when assignments are due．
Having worked’with IBM’s Watson technology platform in the past，the professor knew it would be ideal for his artificial TA：Jill Watson．The artificial intelligence system that uses natural language processing and machine learning to analyze large amounts of data has even been cleverer than human competitors on the television show．It would therefore easily be able to handle routine questions that required little“thinking”．
The professor and his team of graduate students began by populating Jill’s memory with 40，000 questions and answers from past terms．Then came the testing stage．At first，Jill was not very
good and often gave strange answers．It often got stuck on certain keywords．By the end of the semester，Jill had attained enough knowledge and skills to participate in forums without any management from Goel，or the other assistants．

One Friday morning, after she had finished her shopping and had taken it to her car, she found that she had forgotten to buy any tea. She ran back to the supermarket, got the tea and went to pay for it. As she did so, she saw the manager come up to her. "Madam," he said, holding out his hand, "I want to congratulate you! You are our lucky customer and everything you have in your basket is free."
