What kind are they?”‎ She replied with a big smile,“Here, have some!”Within seconds I had a handful of the prettiest tomatoes I had ever seen. Those tomatoes looked expensive. ‎ ‎ “Oh,no,you don’t need to give me any”I said.I weakly tried to protest:“Really, you didn’t have to give me any,but I appreciate it.”‎ ‎ The woman smiled again and said,“I hope you enjoy them. And to answer your question,it's an heirloom(祖传的)seed that my mom used to plant. So they aren’t like the ones you get in ‎ the grocery store.”‎ ‎ After that she sped off.She was like an adult version of the tooth fairy:I gave her ice cream and she gave me tomatoes.‎ ‎ About two weeks later,my boss at the ice cream store sent me a text message:“I want to let you know your gardener dropped off a box of vegetables for you.”,Baffled,I replied,“My gardener?”‎ ‎ That night,my boss showed me the box.It was full of tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans and so on.The tomato fairy was back! The most common nose rings are golden ones with complex designs to hide the cruel reality of contro1. ‎ ‎ I could not honestly keep up a tradition that demeans(贬低)a woman’s status in society, branding her as the property of a man.Learning how the custom arose completely changed my thinking about nose rings as fashion statements. Then I made my decision:I did not want my nose pierced. After all,all I quest for is self-transformation and personal liberation.‎ ‎28.Why didn’t the author’s mother agree with her idea immediately?‎ A.Her mother was born an Indian girl.‎ B.Her mother didn’t have a nose ring! ‎ C.Her mother thought it natural to wear a nose ring.‎ D.Her mother may know something about nose piercing. ‎ ‎29.What does a nose ring originally mean in India?‎ A.A man’s occupation of a woman. ‎ B.A sad story of an Indian woman.‎ C.A large beautiful hoop made of gold.‎ D.A group of cattle. ‎ ‎30.From the passage we can learn that________. ‎ A.the author is afraid of taking up a challenge ‎ B.Indian girls get their noses pierced on special days ‎ C.the author thought it normal to question a tradition D.nose tings are always regarded as a fashion ‎ ‎31.Finally the author didn’t want her nose pierced because____.‎ A.her mother refused her to do that B.she would be looked down upon ‎ C.she feared to be controlled by a man D.she understood the truth of the custom ‎ D At the end of the spring semester in May,students taking Georgia Tech’s online Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence course received some surprising news.Jill Watson, one of the nine teaching assistants(TAs)that had helped them finish the challenging course for the past five months was not a ‘‘she’’ but an “it”—an intelligent robot!‎ Watson is the brainchild of Ashok Goel, who teaches the popular online course. The Professor of Computer and Cognitive Science in the School of Interactive Computing came up with the idea as a way to deal with the number of questions posed by students in the online forums(论坛).According to Goel, every time the course is offered, the 300 or so students that enroll post over 10,000 questions. The questions are often repetitive. This led Goel to wonder if a smart robot would handle the questions which require standard responses—things like dates when assignments are due. ‎ ‎ Having worked’with IBM’s Watson technology platform in the past, the professor knew it would be ideal for his artificial TA:Jill Watson. The artificial intelligence system that uses natural language processing and machine learning to analyze large amounts of data has even been cleverer than human competitors on the television show.It would therefore easily be able to handle routine questions that required little“thinking”.‎ ‎ The professor and his team of graduate students began by populating Jill’s memory with 40,000 questions and answers from past terms. Then came the testing stage. At first,Jill was not very ‎ good and often gave strange answers. It often got stuck on certain keywords.By the end of the semester,Jill had attained enough knowledge and skills to participate in forums without any management from Goel,or the other assistants.‎ ‎32.What surprised the students who take the online course?‎ A.The course was interesting but challenging.‎ B.A teaching assistant wasn't a real person.‎ C.Jill Watson is a hard-working TA.‎ D.They all failed to pass their course.‎ ‎33.What’s the best title for the text?‎ A.A Robot of Georgia gives an online course B.Ashok Goel Came up With the Idea of Jill Watson ‎ C.Jill Watson—One of the Nine Teaching Assistants D.Georgia Tech’s Teaching Assistant Turn Out to Be a Robot ‎ ‎34.Why did Goel decide to invent a smart robot?‎ A.A number of students took his online course.‎ B.A smart robot is cleverer than a human being. ‎ C.Too many similar questions are to be dealt with. ‎ D.A smart robot could be easily controlled by him.‎ ‎35.What can we infer from the text?‎ A.Students should deal with routine questions. ‎ B.Jill is mainly in charge of posting surprising news.‎ C.The TAs give students homework at a certain time. ‎ D.Goel is satisfied with Jill's present performance. ‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为 多余选项。‎ ‎ Spring is finally here.Have you noticed that you and those around you are now in a better mood than a few months ago? Yes,this time of year is often thought of as the period when we feel happier and more content, which is called spring euphoria(幸福愉快感).In fact, spring euphoria can be scientifically explained. 36 ‎ ‎ One of the most important factors that work is the combination of increased light and warmth. 37 That means we have to work harder to stay alert during the long periods of darkness in winter. The arrival of spring bring more daylight, enjoy the energy that is no longer needed to fight off sleepiness.‎ ‎ At the same time, our hormone(荷尔蒙的)balance is also changed when spring is coming. The increased light and rising temperature brings about the release of serotonin,a brain chemical that affects how a person feels, and endorphin,a hormone that reduces the feeling of pain.38 ‎ ‎ With the development of air-conditioning and heating, our welfare is no longer weather dependant. 39 In warmer weather,we feel like going where we can get a cool beer or an ice cream. It's a positive sign that the body reacts positively to a beautiful day.40 Studies have shown that positive social contact is closely linked to a sense of happiness.‎ ‎ Hello, spring euphoria! Our records show that you checked it out on September 17 and we have no record of its having been returned.  ‎ M: I'm sure I've returned it. I remember that it was a rainy day and I had to carry it in a plastic bag. ‎ W: Well, our policy is that, when a book is lost, you must pay for it. We have to be fair about these things. ‎ M: I understand your position. Is there a way we can check to see if the book is here, just in case someone missed it? ‎ W: Well, I doubt that we would make any mistakes about this. But you can look on the shelf. ‎ M: Aha! Here it is! ‎ W: Let me see if it is the same copy you borrowed. I'll check the number on it with our records. ‎ M: I'm very sorry to bother you with this.‎ W: It doesn't matter. Well, it is the same copy. ‎ M: Good! ‎ W: Sorry. We could have missed something. I am awfully sorry. ‎ M: Don't worry about that.‎ ‎10. All the housewives who went to the new supermarket had one great ambition: to be the lucky customer who did not have to pay for her shopping. For this was what the notice just inside said. It said: “Remember, once a week, one of our customers gets free goods. This May Be Your Lucky Day!”‎ For several weeks Mrs. Edwards hoped, like many of her friends, to be the lucky customer. Unlike her friends, she never gave up hope. The cupboards in her kitchen were full of things which she did not need. It's no use her husband trying to stop her. She dreamed of the day when the manager of the supermarket would come to her and said: "Madam, this is your lucky day. Everything in your basket is free."‎ One Friday morning, after she had finished her shopping and had taken it to her car, she found that she had forgotten to buy any tea. She ran back to the supermarket, got the tea and went to pay for it. As she did so, she saw the manager come up to her. "Madam," he said, holding out his hand, "I want to congratulate you! You are our lucky customer and everything you have in your basket is free."‎
