I was getting some work done while Ramanda appeared to be having a good time in the other room. No problem, I figured. But then it got a little too quiet and I yelled out, “What are you doing, Ramanda?” No response. I repeated my question and heard her say, “Oh,…nothing.” Nothing? What does “nothing” mean?‎ I got up from my desk and ran out into the living room, and then I saw her take off down the hall. I chased her up the stairs and watched her as her little behind made a hard left into the bedroom. I was gaining on her! She took off for the bathroom. Bad move. I had her cornered. I told her to turn around. She refused. I pulled out my big, mean authoritative(命令式的)Daddy voice.” Young lady, I said turn around!”‎ Slowly, she turned toward me. In her hand was what was left of my wife’s new lipstick. And every square inch of her face was covered with bright red(except her lips of course)! ‎ As she looked up at me with fearful eyes, lips trembling, I heard every voice that had been shouted to me as a child. “How could you…You should know better than that…How many times have you been told … What a bad thing to do…” It was just a matter of my picking out which old message I was going to use on her so that she would know what a bad girl she had been. But before I could let loose, I looked down at the sweatshirt my wife had put on her only an hour before. In big letters it said, “I’M A PERFECT LITTLE ANGEL!” I looked back up into her tearful eyes and, instead of seeing a bad girl who didn’t listen, I saw a child of God… a perfect little angel full of worth, value and a wonderful spontaneity(自发行为)that I had come dangerously close to shaming out of her.‎ ‎“Sweetheart, you look beautiful! let’s take a picture so Mommy can see how special you look.” I took the picture and thanked God that I didn’t miss the opportunity to reaffirm(在肯定) what a perfect little angel he had given me.,‎ ‎21. A study by the University of Chicago in the US found that instead of feeling embarrassed, people who chat to strangers enjoy a better ride than those who sit in silence or bury themselves in their phones.‎ ‎ In the study, researchers found most real-life people refused to start conversations with fellow travelers at first because they expected not to get a friendly answer. But the result turned out to be just the opposite—most strangers were not only willing to be talked to, but also pleasant to talk to.‎ ‎ “Human beings are social animals,” Nicholas Epley, one of the lead researchers, told Live Science, “Other people are people, too. And it turns out that they’d like to get to know you.”‎ ‎ Apart from making you happier, small talk with strangers can also help you feel connected to your surroundings. Previous studies found that when people are frequently smiled at, made eye contact with and spoken to at coffee shops, they tend to have a stronger sense of belonging instead of feeling like they are being ignored and left out.‎ ‎ And if you are already comfortable enough to make small talk with strangers, you should try to develop it into something “bigger”.‎ ‎ A 2010 study proved that having a deep and meaningful conversation gives you even more happiness than small talk. Participants in the study---79 college students-reported after the four—day experiment that they were much happier when they had a third as much small talk and twice as many in –depth conversations.‎ ‎ But deep conversations can start with small talk, can’t they? So the first step is to start talking, no matter how casual the topic is. And who knows, maybe an opening line as simple as “I like your hat” could lead to a serious conversation in which you learn something new from a stranger.‎ ‎25. According to Nicholas Epley, we can learn that ______.‎ ‎ A. researchers want to tell us small talk makes us happy ‎ B. people are naturally curious about others ‎ C. people are afraid of loneliness or boredom ‎ D. people try to show their good side to strangers.‎ ‎26. One benefit of small talk is_____.‎ ‎ A. wasting less time ‎ B. developing useful contacts ‎ C. arousing strangers’ interest in you ‎ D. feeling like you are a part of your surroundings ‎27. In order to feel much happier in a conversation with a stranger, it is advised that you_____.‎ ‎ A. start with serious topics B. start with casual topics ‎ C. make it important and deep D. try to avoid awkward topics ‎ ‎28. What might be the best title of the passage?‎ ‎ A. Human beings need small talk[‎ ‎ B. Small talk makes us happy ‎ C. Be bold enough to start a conversation with strangers ‎ D. Small talk with a stranger can develop into something deep and meaningful.‎ C Eco-friendly Car Racer Can you image a car racer is so eco-friendly that its tyres are made from potatoes, its body is created from hemp (大麻) and rapeseed oil and it runs on fuel made from wheat and sugar beet? The one-seater racing car called Eco One is built by experts from Warwick University, who hope that Eco One will be adopted by the automotive industry. It is sold at $ 51,000. ‎ Pollution-sensitive Dress Don’t be caught outside unaware of pollution levels in the air. The pollution-sensitive EPA Dress by Stephanie Sandstrom notices pollution in the air accordingly. This dress – which is actually quite pretty – looks like you pull it from the bottom of the dirty laundry pile when the air is dirty. It might protect your health by advising you to stay indoors for the day, but it won’t do you any favor if you’re meeting with clients. ‎ Eco-friendly Umbrella Traditional umbrellas come with a fixed surface. Although it is changeable, you cannot replace it easily. This eco-friendly design is more flexible. It is actually only an umbrella skeleton ‎ without any surface, which can be folded, so you can put anything such as newspapers, plastic bags or whatever you want to serve as the protecting surface.‎ Eco-friendly Moss (苔藓) Carpet ‎ It is said that walking on fresh grass increases your blood circulation. The Moss Carpet, created by Nguyen La Chanh, looks at getting the grass to your feet. The mat includes ball moss, island moss and forest moss. The humidity (湿度) of the bathroom ensures that it grows well. And that’s why you need to place it there and not anywhere else. ‎ ‎ 29. What can we infer about the products?‎ ‎ A. They are high technology products B. They are beneficial to people’s health.‎ ‎ C. They are sensitive to pollution D. They are environmentally friendly D By now, you’ve probably come across the college decision heard around the world: Malia Obama will be attending Harvard University—but not before she takes a gap year. Harvard, among many other colleges and universities, actually encourages such a decision.‎ ‎ Two words captured our attention immediately: “gap year.” In the world of high school---which is stressful enough as it is—college decision time can be panic attack-inducing. In fact, Dr. Sharon Sevier (chair of the board of The American School Counselor Association)reveals, “The competition and pressure on kids have really increased Many schools have strict admission requirements. So many times, if they are denied, students take it as a personal failure. School is more challenging, the stakes seem to be higher, and pressure is alive and well.” So students need ‎ ‎(and deserve)time to find themselves before mapping out the rest of their lives.‎ ‎ Though there are no official statistics that track participation in gap year programs, the Associated Press reports that 30,000 to 40,000 students take advantage of the break each year, and the year 2015 showed a 22 percent increase in students taking gap years over the previous year, according to surveys taken by the American Cap Association. During this time students may engage in advanced academic courses and non-academic courses, such as yearlong pre-college math courses, language studies, learning a trade, art studies, volunteer work, travel, internships, sports and more.‎ ‎ But while gap years are becoming more popular, many people are still cautious. Gap years aren’t for everyone. Gap years are often viewed as something only wealthier families can afford and that students from poorer backgrounds should just get on with their studies. Readjusting to an academic timetable after spending time abroad can be a shock. You also need to consider the practicalities, from financing your gap year to surviving without home comforts.‎ ‎32. What’s the function of the first paragraph?‎ ‎ A. To ask for information B. To lead to the topic ‎ C. To entertain the readers D. To present an idea ‎33. Which of the following is true according to the passage?‎ ‎ A. A gap year is suitable for everyone ‎ B. Students who are admitted to key universities are unlikely to take a gap year.‎ ‎ C. Taking a gap year is of great benefit to students.‎ ‎ D. Universities don’t encourage students to take a gap year.‎ ‎34. What’s the author’s attitudes “gap year”?‎ ‎ A. Approving B. Objective ‎ C. Disapproving D. Indifferent ‎35. The passage is written to______.‎ ‎ A. introduce something about gap year ‎ B. encourage students to take a gap year ‎ C. stress the importance of gap year ‎ D. introduce different views on English spelling 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Smartphone stress: Are you a victim of ‘always on’ culture?‎ You are on holiday but secretly check your work emails the moment you wake up. You get anxious if there’s no Wi-Fi in the hotel or mobile phone signal up the mountain.36 And you secretly worry things will go wrong at work if you’re not there. There are the typical signs of “always on” stress induced by smart phone addiction.‎ Work-life balance Pittsburgh-based developer Kevin Holesh was so worried about how much he was ignoring his family and friends and he developed an app-Moment-to monitor his usage. The app enables users to see how much time they’re spending on the device and set up warnings if self-controlled usage limits are offended. 37 “Some time on your phone, some time off it, enjoying your loving family and friends around you.” And some employers are acknowledging that getting the work-life balance right isn’t so easy. We need help.‎ ‎“Always stressed”‎ ‎38You are not giving your body time to recover. so you’re always stressed.
