Social media is one of the fastest-growing industries in today’s world. A study conducted by the US think tank (智囊团) Pew Research Center showed that 92 percent of teenagers go online daily.
The wide spread of social media has changed nearly all parts of teenagers’ lives.
Changing relationships
High school student Elly Cooper from Illinois said social media often reduces face-to-face communication.
“It makes in-person relationships harder because people give attention to their phones instead of their boyfriends or girlfriends,” Cooper said.
There’s also a greater possibility of things getting lost in translation over social media.
“If half of your relationship is over social media, you don’t really know how the other person is reacting,” Sienna Schulte, a junior student from Illinois, said.
Yet, some people believe social media has made it easier to start relationships with anyone from anywhere. Beth Kaplan from Illinois met her long-distance friend through social media. He currently lives in Scotland, but they’re still able to frequently communicate with one another.
“I can feel close to someone that I’m talking to via（通过）FaceTime,” Kaplan said.
Wanting to be “liked”
The rise of social media has changed the way teenagers see themselves.
The 19-year-old Essena O’Neill announced on the social networking service Instagram that she was quitting social media because it made her obsessed (痴迷) with appearing perfect online.
Negative comments also can do great damage to a teenager’s self-esteem (自尊).
In particular, anonymous (匿名的) social media apps such as Yik Yak may provide opportunities for cyber bullying (网络欺凌).
The app allows users within 5 miles (8 km) to create and add comments to everything. Teenagers who get negative comments on these sites can’t help but feel hurt.

However, Armin Korsos, a student from Illinois, takes advantage of the comments he receives over social media to improve his videos on the social networking site Youtube.

Six-month-old babies are strictly limited in what they can remember about the objects they see in the world. If you hide several objects from babies, they will only remember one of those objects. But a new study, which was published in an issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, finds that when babies “forget” about an object, not all is lost. Researchers used to think that babies less than two years old did not understand that an object
continues to exist when it is not in the baby’s view. But in mid-1980s, new ways of doing experiments with babies found that they do, in fact, know that objects don’t disappear when they do not look at them -- a concept known as object permanence. But it was still unknown what babies needed to remember about objects in order to remember their existence.
Now Melissa Kibbe, of John Hopkins University, and Alan Leslie, of Rutgers University, are working to figure out exactly what it is that babies remember about objects. For the new study, they showed six-month-old babies two objects, a disk and a triangle. Then they hid the objects behind small screens, first one shape, then the other. Earlier research has shown that young babies can remember what was hidden most recently, but have more trouble remembering the first object that was hidden. Once the shapes were hidden, they lifted the screen in front of the first object. Sometimes they showed babies the shape that was hidden there originally, but sometimes it was the other shape, and sometimes the object had vanished completely.
Psychologists (心理学家) measure how long babies look at something to see how surprised they are. In Kibbe and Leslie’s study, babies weren’t particularly surprised to see that screen had changed, for example, from a triangle to a disk. But if the object was gone altogether, the babies looked significantly longer, indicating surprise at an unexpected result: “This shows that even though babies don’t remember the shape of the object, they know that it should continue to exist,” Kibbe says. “They remember the object without remembering the features that identify（鉴别） that object.”
This helps explain how the young brain processes information about objects, Leslie say. He thinks the brain has a structure that acts like a kind of pointer, a mental finger that points at an object.

I was raised on a farm in the Fraser Valley along with five sisters and one brother. When I was 15, I got addicted to drinking at weekends and then dropped out of school. M: How many palaces are there in the city?
W: Three.
M: Just three? I thought there are more.
W: On your right, you can see a statue of Paulo Pimentez.

W: He was a famous writer who lived and died in the city.
M: I think I saw another statue of him in the park. It was beautiful!
W: That wasn’t a statue of Paulo Pimentez you saw in the park. There are a lot of statues in the city.

M: And I’ve only worn it a few times, but when I looked at it yesterday I just thought, no, I don’t like it. I don’t think it suits me. The colour’s not really right for me. Do you know what I mean?
W: Well … um, do you have any receipt, or proof of purchase?
M: No, no, I didn’t keep the receipt, sorry.
W: Well, we can’t normally exchange goods without proof of purchase, you see.
M: Oh no.
W: I can speak to the manager if you like, see what he says.
M: Well yes, if you would … because I would like to change it.

W: Broke again? Jeff, this is the third time you’ve asked me for help!
M: I know, I’m sorry. But my old guitar broke, and I had to buy a new one.
W: Look Jeff, if you want to play in a band, that’s OK with me, but you can’t keep asking me to pay for it!
M: OK, OK, you’re right. But what do you think I ought to do?
W: Well, I think you had better go on a budget. Make a list of all your income and all your expenses. Don’t spend more than you earn.
M: But my expenses are always larger than my income.
W: Then maybe you should work more hours at the computer store.
M: I already work 15 hours a week! Maybe I should just drop out of school, work full-time, and play in the band in the evenings.
W: Come on, Jeff, when I was your age …
M: I know, I know. When you were my age you were already married and working and going to school …

W: Thank you to all the competitors. I won’t say much because I know you’re all anxious to hear the results — it was a very difficult decision and I’ll start with the band which came in fourth. That’s Texas Team, who are the youngest group here today. Unfortunately, the violinist played so quietly that we couldn’t hear him. So bad luck to Texas Team. Third was Eastside. They are such good dancers they should enter for a dance competition. And with a bit more practice on the music they’ll do very well. In second place is Third Avenue. They did well, especially their young guitarist, but the singer looked so unhappy we thought maybe he didn’t want to win! Never mind — you nearly won, so better luck next time. Congratulations to The Storm who are our winners today. The singer had such a great voice that we had to give them first place. Well done.
