A small cafe upstairs is a great place to quietly read your new book and enjoy a selection of coffees, wine and cigars.

Originally established in 1919 by Sylvia Beach, it is a combination of a bookstore and a reading library, specializing in English-language literature. In the 1920s, the store was a meeting point for literary icons such as Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway and James Joyce. This rainy afternoon I decided to visit the Great North Museum. Walking into the building, I
just felt excited, looking forward to what I was going to find out in the visit, something I would like to share with my beloved husband when I got home.
Just as I walked past the Chinese Antique Porcelain section, one collection caught my eyes
and heart very much: a Chinese plate with a drawing of a garden scene with two ladies, a child, a dog and a willow, very beautiful and unique. It reminded me that my mum used to have a similar plate
like that;of course it was not from the Ming Dynasty, but we had plates and bowls of a
similar design, following and serving us for many years.
I still remember every day mum was busy cooking for eight of us. While waiting for the
dinner to be ready, we would play in the garden, jumping up and down, with the family dogs and cats also running around. When the dinner was ready, we all ran over to the big round table,
everyone holding a bowl with rice, and chopsticks, getting ready to fight for the food on the table. My mum normally would prepare five or six dishes served with those beautiful Chinese plates.
The noises of chatting mixed with the warm heat, sweat, and wind blowing would slowly accompany the sun setting down. The pleasant evening would come and purple and blue colored the sky. Mum’s face was full of shine and happiness; she loved to see us finish all her dishes. She would always be the last person to eat,
and basically the last to clear the leftovers. Mum always put herself last and the children first. Then I moved away and lived so far from her, but the food that she prepared always stays in my heart, and I always remember the beautiful Chinese plates.
Plates for many people can be just tools to serve food, nothing more than that. But for me they
are not plates, for me they are a memory.
25. Why did the Chinese plate in the Museum draw the author’s attention?
A. Because its pattern and design were elegant.
B. Because it called up her previous experience.
C. Because she could share it with her husband.
D. Because she remembered Mum had the same plate.
26. What can we infer about the author from Paragraph 3?
A. She didn’t want to help her mother cook dinner.
B. She used to fight against her family for more food.
C. Her family enjoyed a warm and happy dinner atmosphere.
D. Her mum would serve precious dishes with Chinese plates.
27. How does the author sound while telling the story?
A. Touched. B. Excited. C. Pleased. D. Encouraged.

It’s cold and dark outside, and your bed is so warm and comfortable. Going for a run seems like such a bad idea. But before you hide your running shoes, it might be worth giving that crazy idea a go.
According to The Huffington Post, an outdoor run in winter, as opposed to one on a treadmill(跑步机),burns more calories because the body is working hard to regulate(调节)its core temperature. Furthermore, research shows that race times are faster in cold weather than in warmer temperatures and quicker runs burn more calories. Similarly, cold weather also makes the heart work harder to distribute blood through the body, making that vital muscle even stronger.
Outdoor exercise also turns up your energy and rids you of the stress and depression that build up every day. The heat and humidity in summer can drag you down and tire you faster, but cold weather is refreshing. It adjusts you to your surroundings, making you feel alive.
Of course, the threat of smog in some built-up areas is a further hurdle to winter exercise. Heart attacks, strokes, lung cancer and asthma are all dangers of running in smog. The combination of air pollution and exercise increases the potential problems. If you do choose to run outside on smoggy days, take a path in a park or residential area to avoid car exhaust(尾气),and go early in the
morning, before rush hour. But staying inside on smoggy days and waiting for the next clear day to run is best.
28. How does cold weather benefit runners, compared with warm weather?
A. They can run more slowly.
B. They can take in more calories.
C. Their hearts can function harder.
D. Their body temperature can get lower.
29. How does summer affect runners?
A. It builds up their energy quickly. B. It makes runners tired easily.
C. It lessens runners’ stress. D. It causes heart attacks.
30. What are the runners supposed to do on smoggy days?
A. Stop driving cars. B. Do more exercise.
C. Avoid outdoor exercise. D. Run late in the morning.
31. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. Refresh with a Winter Run
B. Take Outdoor Exercise in Summer
C. Go to Run in a Park
D. Follow the Tips to Reduce Stress

Tea,the most typical English drink, became established in Britain because of the influence of a foreign princess,Catherine of Braganza, the queen of Charles II.As a lover of tea since her childhood in Portugal, she brought tea-drinking to the English royal court and set a trend for the beverage in the 17th century. The fashion soon spread beyond the circle of the nobility to the middle classes, and tea became a popular drink at the London coffee houses where people met to do business and discuss events of the day. Many employers served a cup of tea to their workers in the middle of the morning, thus inventing a lasting British institution, the“tea break.”However, drinking tea in social settings outside the workplace was beyond the means of the majority of British people. It came with a high price tag and tea was taxed as well.
Around 1800,the seventh Duchess of Bedford,Anne Maria, began the popular practice of“afternoon tea,”a ceremony taking place at about four o’clock.Until then, people did not usually eat or drink anything between lunch and dinner. At approximately the same time, the Earl of Sandwich popularized a new way of eating bread—in thin slices, with something like jam or cucumbers between them. Before long,a small meal at the end of the afternoon, involving tea and sandwiches, became part of the British way of life.
As tea became much cheaper during the 19th century, its popularity spread right through all corners of the British society. Thus, tea became Britain’s favorite drink. In working-class households,it was served with the main meal of the day, eaten when workers returned home after a day’s labor. This meal has become known as“high tea.”Today, tea can be drunk at any time of the day,and accounts for over two-fifths of all drinks consumed in Britain---with the exception of water.
32.What is mainly discussed about tea in the text?
A.Its development in Britain. B.Its traditional ways of drinking.
C.Its influence around the world. D.Its popularity in Europe.
33.What does the underlined words“the beverage”probably refer to?
A.Tea drinking. B.A small meal.
C.A way of eating bread. D.A choice of drinks.
34.Why was tea unable to be accepted as a common drink in Britain in the 17th century?
A.It was merely served in London.
B.It was taxed as an alcoholic drink.
C.It was forbidden in business settings.
D.It was too expensive for most people.
35.How is the text organized?
A.By cause and effect. B.By comparison.
C.In time order. D.In frequency order.

How to overcome shyness
Does the thought of talking in front of people make you shy? If so, you are far from alone. Many people in the world suffer from mild to extreme shyness and are struggling to overcome it. Remember that breaking out of that shell doesn't magically happen overnight. 36 You're on the right track by just reading this article — now let's keep going.
Figure out your reasons. Do you become shy in front of new audience? Or when surrounded by people you know and admire? Try to find out the thoughts that go through your head right before the shyness hits. Chances are that not all situations make you shy. You're okay being around your family, right? Are they different from the strangers around you? Of course not . 37
38 For 99% of us, we become shy when we think if we speak up or stand out, we'll embarrass ourselves. That's why it's important to focus on others. When we stop focusing on ourselves, we stop worrying about our performance.
Practice speaking clearly to yourself. You have gotten used to hearing your own voice! Record yourself pretending to have conversations. Sounds ridiculous, sure, but you'll notice patterns, when and why you stop, etc. At the beginning you'll feel like an actor, but it will become an old habit. 39
Don't compare yourself to others. The more you compare yourself to others, the more you will feel that you are not able to measure up. 40 Even if you do, do it realistically. Everyone else has his own confidence problems, too!
A. Place your attention on others.
B. Practice makes habits, you know.
C.Take the challenge and face it bravely.
D. It is no use comparing yourself to anybody else.
E. It takes time, efforts, and of course the desire to change.
F. You just know them better and what’s more, they know you
G.The reason for your shyness is that you are lacking in confidence.

Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m Li Hua, a student from Xinhua Middle School. I’m writing this letter to thank you for returning my schoolbag.
Last Sunday afternoon, after I played basketball with my friends in the playground, I left my schoolbag there owing to my carelessness. I was worried because my student’s ID card, books, wallet and other things were all in it, which are very important to me. Just as I was at a loss, I was informed that my schoolbag was at the school’s Lost and Found, where I knew it was you who had picked up my schoolbag and handed it in.
It’s such a great kindness that I’m extremely grateful to you.You did set a good example to us.
Yours,
