My father was always a good gardener. One of my earliest memories is standing without shoes in the freshly tilled(翻耕的)soil, my hands blackened from digging in the ground.
As a child, I loved following Dad around in the garden, I remember Dad pushing the tiller(耕作机)ahead in perfectly straight lines. Dad loved growing all sorts of things: yellow and green onions, watermelons almost as big as me, rows of yellow com, and our favorite ― red tomatoes.
As I grew into a teenager, I didn’t get so excited about gardening with Dad. Instead of magical land of possibility, it had turned into some kind of prison. As Dad grew older, his love for gardening never disappeared. After all the kids were grown and had started families of their own, Dad turned to gardening like never before. Even when he was diagnosed with cancer, he still took care of his garden.
But then, the cancer, bit by bit, invaded his body. I had to do the things he used to do. What really convinced me that Dad was dying was the state of his garden that year. The rows and rows of multicolored vegetables were gone. Too tired to weed them, he simply let them be. He only planted
tomatoes.
For the first few years after he died, I couldn’t even bear to look at anyone’s garden without having strong memories pour over me like cold water from a bucket. Three years ago, I decided to plant my own garden and started out with just a few tomatoes. That morning, after breaking up a fair amount of soil, something caught the comer of my eye and I had to smile. It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, happily playing in the freshly tilled soil.
24. Why did the author like the garden when he was a child?
A. The garden was planted with colorful flowers.
B. The garden was just freshly tilled by his father.
C. He loved what his father grew in the garden.
D. He enjoyed being in the garden with his father.
25. When all the kids started their own families, the author’s father .
A. devoted more to gardening B. turned to other hobbies
C. stopped his gardening D. focused on planting tomatoes
26. What happened to the garden when the author’s father was seriously ill?
A. The author’s son took charge of it. B. No plant grew in the garden at all.
C. The garden was almost deserted. D. It brought the author a great harvest.
27. We can infer from the last paragraph that .
A. the author’s son played happily in the garden
B. the author’s son reminded him of his own father
C. the author’s son was very glad to help the author
D. the author’s son will continue gardening as well
24-27 DACB
After all the kids were grown and had started families of their own, Dad turned to gardening like never before. Even when he was diagnosed with cancer, he still took care of his garden
"可知,当所有的孩子有了自己的家庭后,父亲对园艺的热爱依然有增无减,所以答案是A。

Mike Miles hadn’t had a stable job in years. He bounced around from one position to another, never sure when his last day would be. Sometimes, he lost a position with less than a day’s notice. This wasn’t due to a poor work ethic—from arriving early to staying late, Miles says he did everything he could to build a good relationship with employers. But because Miles had a criminal record, he was always cut loose when it came time to let staff go.
It wasn't until October 2015, nearly a decade after his release from prison, that a cousin told Miles about Lancaster Food Company, a local business that focuses on hiring people released from prison. Hoping this would clear up what felt like a thick cloud of uncertainty over his future, Miles submitted an application. He got an interview, and he then began a new job.
Miles’ scenario is rare in Lancaster, where the poverty rate holds steady at 30%. This figure riled Charlie Crystle, Lancaster's co-founder and CEO. Crystle was raised in Lancaster but left in 1986 to purse a college degree and later, a career in technology. He co-founded four tech companies, one of which sold for millions of dollars back in 2000.
Crystle is skeptical that many of Lancaster's low-income residents can get started the way he did. He believes food production is a key way to meet former offenders who may lack a college degree. Lancaster produces products like bread. Nowadays the company is rapidly expanding; however, at just 16 full-time employees, including administration and owners, it doesn't lower the city's poverty rate.
Crystle says he wants to inspire other companies to rethink their current practices and start conversations around minimum wage and employment opportunities for
everyone, including ex-offenders. Dan Jurman, who chairs the city's Commission to Combat Poverty, believes that Crystle’s business is a great way to make this happen. “None of us can handle these issues alone,” he said.
28.The purpose of the first paragraph is to show .
A. a man's difficulty in living a stable life
B. an increasingly competitive workplace
C. a decrease in employment opportunities
D. the reason why Lancaster Food Company was founded
29.What does the underlined word "riled" in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Annoyed. B. Discouraged. C. Amused. D. Embarrassed.
30.What words can best describe Charlie Crystle according to the text?
A. Outgoing, kind and considerate.
B. Wealthy but a little bit greedy.
C. Humorous, diligent and ambitious.
D. Successful and socially responsible.
31.In Dan Jurman’s opinion, what is the biggest achievement of Lancaster Food Company?
A. It greatly increases employment opportunities.
B. It suggests an idea for fighting poverty.
C. It provides a way to handle ex-offenders.
D. It creates a stable environment for people.

Do you have imagination? Do you like to solve problems? Can you? If so, you could be the next great inventor. "But I’m just a kid," you might say! Don’t worry about a little thing like age. For example, one famous inventor — Benjamin Franklin — got his start when he was only 12. At that young age, he created paddles for his hands to help him swim faster. Finally his creation led to what we know is called flippers!
So you don’t have to be an adult to be an inventor. One thing you do need, though, is something that kids have plenty of: curiosity and imagination. Kids are known for looking at things in new and
unique ways.
So what should you do if you have what is a great idea for an invention? Talk to a friend or family member about it. Get input from others about your idea. Then ask them to help you create a working model — called a prototype(原型) — of your idea.
Once you have a prototype, you can test it. Sometimes your idea turns out to be not as great as you thought. At other times, though, you realize it is a good idea and your prototype can help you figure out how to make it even better.
If your idea is really a good one, an adult can help you contact companies that might be interested in it. You will also want an adult’s help to get a patent(专利权) for your idea, so that it is protected and can’t be stolen by someone else. If you need some inspiration, consider these kids and their inventions:
Jeanie Low invented the Kiddie Stool when she was just 11. It’s a folding stool that fits under the kitchen sink. Kids can unfold it and use it to reach the sink all by themselves.
At the age of 15, Louis Braille invented the system named after him that allows the blind to read.
Chelsea Lanmon received a patent when she was just 8 for the "pocket diaper", a new type of diaper that includes a pocket for holding baby wipes and powder.
32. By saying "But I’m just a kid", you probably means you .
A. are too young to achieve anything
B. can do anything though you are young
C. are old enough to become an inventor
D. have to learn knowledge from other people
33. Kids are most likely to be inventors probably because they .
A. would like to make friends with others
B. usually work hard at their lessons at school
C. like playing all kinds of toys at home
D. think about things in quite different ways
34. Who invented something that helps the blind to read?
A. Jeanie Low.
B. Benjamin Franklin.
C. Chelsea Lanmon.
D. Louis Braille.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?
A. Kids have curiosity and imagination.
. There are some world famous inventors.
C. Kids are exactly like adults in a way.
D. It is possible for kids to be inventors.
32-35 ADDD
【文章大意】本文是一篇议论文。你有想象力吗?有能力解决难题吗?不要以自己是孩子为借口,Frankin,Braille,Lanmon就是成功的榜样。
32.A 【解析】推理判断题。根据第一段中的"Don’t worry about a little thing like age."等语境可知,你这么说是想表明你太小,还获得不了任何成就。
33.D 【解析】推理判断题。根据第二段中的"Kids are known for looking at things in new and unique ways."可知,这是因为他们思考、看待问题的方式不同。

It is known that there are a lot of inventions in history. Many of them play an important role in people's life and some even have greatly changed the world.
In my opinion, the mobile phone is the most important invention. The mobile phone makes it possible for us to communicate conveniently with others. We can get comfort whenever we are upset or we run into trouble. What’s more, with the rapid development of electronic equipment, the mobile
phone is getting smaller but more powerful. Nowadays, we can also use a mobile phone to search for information or even shop online. How cool it is!

W: At my local grocery store, regular plastic bags aren’t free anymore. In addition, they take 10 cents off your bill for every reusable bag you bring yourself. (7)
M: It’s great to see we are taking steps to create a healthier environment.

M: Want to go with me to get some pizza, Sally? (10)
W: No, Brad. (10) I’m waiting for a package to be delivered. (8)
M: This is why I hate shopping online. It would be faster to just get what you want from the store. Now you have to sit here all day. (8) Isn’t Mom home?
W: No, Mom went to work.
M: Just download an app to keep track of your package. (9) You can just come back when you get a delivery notice.
W: No, thanks, Mr. Bossy. Even if they leave the package for a short time, someone could steal it.
M: Goodness! You just don’t want to be seen with your little brother! (10)
W: It’s not that. I really did plan to stay home and wait for this package. Why don’t we just have pizza delivered?
M: Great. More waiting.

W: Well, I see you’ve got your books, George. (11) But are you reading? Looks like you’re just coloring. (11)
M: I’m marking the important parts of the book. The colors are for different things.
W: Like what?
M: Main ideas are yellow, important details to remember are pink, and the light green is for
difficult ideas. (12)
W: This seems like a lot of activities. Aren’t you wasting your time?
M: I don’t think so, Mom. I’ll read it all tonight, I’ll listen to it tomorrow, and then when it’s time to study, I will already know most of the information.
W: In my day, we just read the book and tried to remember the information.
M: The teacher told us the importance of active reading, and it’s the best way to learn, at whatever speed you choose. (13)
W: I see. And what’s this notebook for?
M: That’s for taking notes.
W: What kind of things do you write down?
M: Sometimes I write a summary. On this page, I write down questions. And of course, I have another page where I write down new words.

W: Hey, Jason. I hear you’re being sent to France for a new position.
M: Wow, that was fast! I hardly told anyone! The boss just told me a few hours ago, Lily. Katie doesn’t know yet, in fact… (14)
W: Really? So, why wait? When are you going to give her the big news?
M: Well, she is teaching at the moment. She doesn’t finish until 3:30, and then she usually stays after class for a couple hours. It will have to wait until tonight, I guess. (14)
W: Well, I lived there in 2010. It’s not that different from the U.S. The weather is the same, and the local people have similar customs. But the food is much better in France! (15) What about your family? Are they all moving with you?
M: I hope to move everyone in a few months. (16) I definitely don’t like the idea of spending a year without Katie and our kids.
W: Well, that’s what a lot of people in our department say, I suppose.
M: Yeah. Only time will tell. I’ll buy our sandwiches, OK?
W: No, no. It’s my treat.
