A young Los Angeles actor in need of a second job to pay his bills has come up with a brilliant way to supplement his income-people walking.
Chuck McCarthy originally considered becoming a dog walker to earn some extra cash, but soon realized that the job required more than walking dogs on a leash. However, walking people didn't require much when they were out on walks. Chuck realized there was money to be made if he walked people around Los Angeles instead.
It might sound like a joke, but The People Walker, as he calls himself, is very serious about his new job. For $7 per mile, he offers to walk with clients around L.A., listening to their problems or simply making conversations and offering them a sense of security. At 6-feet, 2-inches, and sporting a bulky figure and bushy beard, Chuck doesn't look like the kind of guy you'd want to mess with.
Chuck's services are aimed at people who need a motivational boost to go walking, those who don't feel safe walking alone in some areas, and those who are afraid that people might see them walking by themselves and think that they have no friends. "I wear my The People Walker shirt upon request and on the first walk with a new client, so they
can be 100% sure it's me," McCarthy says. However, he admits some people are a bit uncomfortable with this policy, as they don't necessarily want everyone to know that they're being walked.
So far, Chuck McCarthy has already had another five people walkers employed, covering various areas, like downtown L.A., Hollywood, Eagle Rock, or Fairfax. Once he posted signs around the city, his phone started ringing and clients began rolling in. And with all the free publicity he has been getting in the press lately, more requests are coming.
While he hopes that his acting career will pick up soon, in the meantime Chuck is very happy with his people walking business. After all, it's literally a walk in the park and it pays the bills.
24. What does the underlined word "supplement" in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Save. B.Increase. C.Change. D.Invest.
25. Which service of The People Walker isn't mentioned in the text?
A.Cheering up the clients. B.Accompanying the clients.
C.Buying the clients food. D.Offering a sense of security.
26. Why do people prefer Chuck to walk without wearing the shirt?
A.To keep the walk comfortable. B.To avoid being recognized.
C.To attract more new friends. D.To keep themselves alone.
27. What do we know about Chuck McCarthy from the text?
A.He has lost confidence in his acting career.
B.He hopes to find excitement in people walking.
C.He has inspired other people to be more creative.
D.He earns more as a people walker than as an actor.

Whether you love happy endings or a dark reality in TV dramas, you could soon be able to decide what you get. Netflix, the TV-streaming company behind hit shows such as The Crown and House Of Cards, is working on ways to give viewers control of key plot
decisions.
Some of the storylines will be simple and linear, like the Choose Your Own Adventure books that many grew up with. For example, viewers might decide whether a prisoner in the drama Orange Is The New Black joins a gang (黑帮) or not.
The technology could also potentially be used to allow Princess Margaret to marry Peter Townsend in The Crown, instead of having her relationship with the divorcee (离婚者) blocked by the Establishment. Other storylines will be much more complex, allowing viewers to connect plot points in a variety of ways using their TV remotes.[来源:学|科|网Z|X|X|K]
A source said, "We're doing work on branch narratives (叙事) so you are actually making choices as you watch. All the content will be there, and then people will have to get through it in different ways. We'll see how it plays out. It's an experiment. We'll see if it gets much success. For creators, it's a new field."
Actors would film numerous alternate plot segments (片段) in advance, letting viewers choose which route to take through the story. Netflix will run a trial with choose-your-own-adventure shows for children later this year, based on an established character. If they are successful, it will use the format for TV programs aimed at adults. Netflix president Reed Hastings confirmed that the company is working on interactive shows, saying, "Once you have got interactivity, you can try anything."
At least five million UK households are thought to be signed up to Netflix, and it is challenging traditional broadcasters. Earlier this year, BBC boss Lord Hall promised to reinvent the iPlayer so that it overtakes Netflix as a destination in its own right, rather than a catch-up service.
28. How will viewers connect plot points?
A.By using their TV remotes.
B.By taking part in TV programs.
C.By interacting with actors or actresses.
D.By participating in filming plot segments.
29. Why will Netflix run choose-your-own-adventure shows for children?
A.To attempt to create another hit show.
B.To compete with traditional broadcasters.
C.To attract as many children viewers as possible.
D.To test whether their creative ideas are successful.
30. What's Reed Hastings' attitude to interactive shows?
A.Doubtful. B.Confident. C.Negative. D.Worried.
31. What's the author's purpose of writing this text?
A.To advertise for Netflix company.
B.To recommend some English hit shows.
C.To predict future development in filming.
D.To introduce the latest technology in TV dramas.

The more hours that young children spend in child care, the more likely they are to turn out aggressive and disobedient by the time they are in kindergarten, according to the largest study of child care and development ever conducted. Researchers said this correlation (相关性) held true regardless of whether the children came from rich or poor homes, were looked after by a relative or at a center, and whether they were girls or boys.
What is uncertain, however, is whether the child care actually causes the problem or whether children likely to turn out aggressive happen to be those who spend more hours in child care. It also remains unclear whether reducing the amount of time in child care will reduce the risk that a child will turn into a mean person. What's more, quality child care is associated with increased skills in intellectual ability such as language and memory, leading some academics to suggest that child care turns out children who are “smart and naughty”.
The government-sponsored research, which has tracked more than 1,300 children at 10 sites across the country since 1991, is bound to cause the debate over child care again: How should people balance work and family? And how should parents, especially mothers, resolve the demands that are placed on them to be both breadwinners and supermoms?
That debate was already on display at a news briefing yesterday, where researchers themselves had different opinions about the data and its implications (含义). “There is a constant relationship between time in care and problem behavior, especially those involving aggression and behavior,” said Jay Belsky of Birkbeck College in London, one of the lead investigators of the study who has previously annoyed women's groups because of his criticisms of child care. “On behalf of fathers or mothers?” interrupted Sarah Friedman, a developmental psychologist at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and one of the other lead scientists on the study. “On behalf of parents and families,” responded Belsky.
“NICHD is not willing to get into policy recommendations.” said Friedman, contradicting her colleague. “There are other possibilities that can be entertained. Yes it is a quick solution—more hours in child care is associated with more problems. The easy solution is to cut the number of hours but that may have implications for the family that may not be beneficial to the development of the children in terms of economics.” In an interview after the briefing, Friedman said that asking parents to work fewer hours and spend more time with their children usually meant a loss of family income, which adversely(不利地) affects children.
Scientists said that the study was highly reliable. But the researchers said they had no idea whether the behavioral difficulties persisted as the children moved to higher grades.
32. Children who spend more time in quality child care will ________.
A.develop greater ability in language
B.be easy to manage and less naughty
C.possess great risk-taking spirit
D.be greedy and mean to their classmates
33. What is still unknown about higher level of aggressiveness in kindergarten children?
A.Whether higher level of aggressiveness can be avoided with longer child care.
B.Where longer child care equally affects children from different families.
C.Whether aggressiveness is a direct result of longer child care.
D.Whether longer child care improves intellectual ability in children.
34. In the fifth paragraph the word “it” probably means ________.
A.NICHD is unwilling to give parents recommendations
B.NICHD is willing to give policy advice concerning child care
C.the number of hours in child care should be reduced significantly
D.parents should discipline the behavior of their children more strictly[来源:学。科。网]
35. According to Friedman, Cutting the number of hours in child care ________.
A.will make families unable to enjoy much of the social benefits
B.may prevent families from having the necessary financial sources
C.will result in subsequent behavioral difficulties in children
D.should be accompanied with the improvement in the quality of child care
第二节 (共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)

A lot of people live their lives having no clue what they want. If you ask me, I’d like to point out that you have only one life. 36 You should start right now!
If you don’t want to spend your life wandering aimlessly, you can use the following four tips to find out exactly what you want in life.
1. Regret nothing
It’s your life. It’s time for you to live it exactly the way you want to. If you constantly regret things you did or didn’t do in the past, then you won’t be able to move forward. Don’t live in the past. 37
2. Figure out what you need
Sometimes it’s hard to figure out what you need. 38 Is it your family? The freedom to express yourself? Love? Financial security? Something else? If it helps, you can make a list of priorities. Also think about the kind of legacy (遗产)you want to leave behind.
3. Let people around you know what you’re trying to achieve
39 Voice them all out! If you tell people what you’re trying to accomplish, they will most likely support you and give you new ideas.
4. Stay positive.
Life doesn’t always go the way you want it. Don’t feel discouraged as your plans stray(偏离). Take control. 40 You will get there someday. You’re just taking a little detour. Sometimes a positive attitude is all you need to keep going.
A. Live in the present and the future!
B. Don’t keep your goals and desires to yourself.
C. Sit down and think about what you need the most.
D. Instead of going crazy, try your best to deal with the changes.
E. Setting a goal can help you experience everything you want in life.
F. You should get the most out of it and do things that make you happy.
G. Once you find the thing that makes you happy the most, you will have a clear idea of what you should strive for.

Dear Anne,
I am very sorry that I didn’t attend your birthday party last Sunday. I feel awful about it and want to apologize to you.
It was nice of you to invite me to your party. I should have come and celebrated the precious moment with you, but the monthly test is around the corner, so I was so busy preparing for the test that I forgot the appointment. I hope you understand my situation and forgive me. Is it possible for you and me to have a private meeting after the test? I do long for a pleasant chat with you.
It is much to my regret that I missed the chance of a happy get-together. Once again, please accept my sincere apology.
Yours
