Poor and alone, 16-year-old Joanna must get up uncommon courage to survive as a servant in a strange new world. The Broken Blade by William Durbin In 1800, 13-year-old Pierre La Page never imagined he’d be leaving Montreal to paddle 2,400 miles. It was something older men, like his father, did. But when Pierre’s father has an accident, Pierre quits school to become a voyager for the North West Company, so his family can survive the winter. It’s hard for Pierre as the youngest in the team. Pierre is miserable. Still he has no choice but to endure the trip to Grand Portage and back. Stowaway by Karen Hesse It is known that in the summer of 1768, Captain James Cook sailed from England, beginning a three-year voyage around the world on a secret mission to discover an unknown continent at the bottom of the globe. What is less known is that a boy named Nicholas Young was a stowaway (偷乘船者) on that ship. Karen Hesse recreates Cook’s voyage through the eyes of his remarkable boy, creating a fictional journal filled with fierce hurricanes, warring natives, and disease, as Nicholas discovers new lands, incredible creatures, and lifelong friends. As I cleared security, the progress of my flight went from departing one hour late to two hours, then three hours, then four hours late. I learned about these delays from the announcements given by an annoying airline gate agent. It became clear that I was going to miss my connecting flight home. After minute-by-minute travel rearrangements, and knowing that I had to give web-based training the next morning back home, my husband Jim decided to drive to the airport, pick me up, and drive me back. Jim and I arrived home at 4:30 am. I napped (小睡) for a couple of hours, made coffee, logged on to the Internet conference site (网站) for my training, and waited and waited and waited. It is lonely giving web-based live meeting training when no one logs in. Do you know why they didn’t log in? Because I had actually scheduled the training for the next day, not the day that we had raced home to await. I worried about telling Jim that he had held off sleep, driven through a huge storm and gotten through road construction to get me home 24 hours early for training. But the phone eventually rang as he called from work and it was time to own up (坦白). What do you think he said? What would you have said? Would you have scolded? Yelled? Teased? Would you have called all of your friends and let them know? Well, Jim’s response to finding out that he had driven an almost 400-mile round trip in the rain for nothing was a slight chuckle (轻声地笑) and this comment: “The important thing is you are home.” The important thing is you are home... Today, remind someone how important it is that they are at home with you. If they live far away, tell them how important it is that they have a home in your heart. 24. What trouble did the writer have? A. Her plane was delayed and she had to rearrange her connecting flight home. B. She was informed of the web-based training too late and was going to miss it. C. She failed to give the web-based training as no one was informed to log in on time. D. She had a big argument with an annoying airline gate agent and missed her flight. 25. We can learn from the text that _____ . A. the writer cancelled her web-based training permanently B. Jim drove the writer home to get her there in time for her training C. the writer took it for granted that Jim would pick her up from the airport IrushedtotheairportonlytofindoutfromanairlineticketrepresentativethatmyreturnflightwasoneD.the writer caught her connecting flight and was back home in time for her training 26. The writer felt worried about owning up to Jim because _____ . A. she knew he would get really upset and yell at her B. no one could log on the Internet conference site C. she was sorry that it had taken him so long to get home D. she had mistaken the training date and he needn’t have picked her up 27. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. Not to feel regret B. To do anything for you C. Getting me home D. Driving in the rain C The Ouch Podcast (播客) talks about news and issues affecting those with a disability, all with a humorous touch added to the mix. I’ve been listening to it on and off for a few months and their recent topic was about public transport. They shared some stories about rudeness and others about funny circumstances. While they were talking about their local transport system, the opinions and stories they shared are common to all of us. Those of you that have a disability, and those of you who travel with people who do are aware of the problems that can arise. Many of the buses in my local area are the accessible kind. But some are the old kind with steps. If you have mobility issues it can be a great challenge each time you decide to catch the bus. Hopefully the old buses will be phased out over time. During the podcast one of the hosts, Kathleen, talks about the issues that affect her. I can empathise (产生 共鸣)with her and her experiences. I’m sure many of you will be able to. How often do you board a bus or a train and find there aren’t any seats available? I rarely experience this on the bus but it’s common on the train. Like Kathleen, I’d prefer to stand than draw attention to myself and try to explain to someone why I need a seat. There’s no guarantee they’d move anyway. This is my choice, however, so I can’t blame others. My issue comes from the white knight (骑士) behaviour of the other passengers. How many of you have received looks of disapproval when you are seated but there are others standing who look like they need a seat? When I’m sitting down I look just as capable as everyone else, which leads to requests and demands to give up my seat. It’s only when I stand up and they see me walk and watch me try to keep balance that they realise I’m not. Don’t forget to check out the Ouch Podcast. I’m sure they’ll have something you can relate to. You can listen to them at audioBoom or on the BBC website. 28. What do we know about the Ouch Podcast? A. It refers to public transportation. B. It’s related to the disabled people. C. It is a pretty inspiring talk show. D. It’s about the latest news or issues. 29. Which can best replace the underlined part “will be phased out” in Paragraph 3? A. will be stopped from being used B. will always be punctual C. will be handy for its repair D. will be introduced gradually 30. Why does the author prefer to stand instead of asking for help while on a train? A. To keep fit. B. Because he is shy. C. To avoid embarrassment. D. Because he couldn’t get help. 31. What bothers the author according to Paragraph 6? A. Receiving looks of sympathy. B. Looking disabled while standing. C. Having trouble keeping his balance. D. Being asked to give his seat to others. D When it comes to success in business and success in life, there are few qualities as important as confidence. People naturally have different levels of confidence. Some have a higher level of confidence than others do, but even those whose confidence is lacking can learn to build their level of confidence and reach their most important goals. Increasing self-confidence is one of the most common reasons people give for seeking the help of psychologists and other professionals. One of the many places where a greater level of confidence is useful is in the workplace. We all know how difficult it can be, for instance, to ask the boss for a raise. This process can be extremely difficult for those who lack confidence in their own abilities. After all, if you are unsure about your own abilities, how will you ever convince your boss that you deserve more money for the work you do? Even if you are not asking for that big raise, having plenty of confidence in your abilities is important to success. If you are certain of your abilities, chances are that those around you, whether they are your coworkers, your colleagues or your superiors, will see that confidence, and that will help to assure them that you are the best at what you do. Being thought of as the person to go to, and being seen as an expert in your chosen field, is naturally very important to success on the job. If you can make yourself the person people go to for guidance and advice, you will help to protect yourself from the ever present danger of downsizing. After all, if you are a recognized expert at the office, you will be regarded as an indispensable member of the team. Having a high level of confidence, after all, does not mean overlooking the places where you could improve. Knowing what you do well and where you need help will help you enjoy increased success and confidence. 32. What is the passage mainly about? A. The influence of confidence on one’s life. B. The difference of people’s confidence. C. The importance of confidence to success. D. The judgment on one’s confidence. 33. Psychologists and other professionals can offer help in the situation where _____ . 3A. one’s boss refuses to give him a raise B. one expects to give guidance to others C. one dreams to take the place of an expert D. one hasn’t faith in reaching his essential goal 34. What does the underlined word “indispensable” in Paragraph 5 probably mean? A. outgoing B. attractive C. important D. energetic 35. What message does the author want to convey (传递) in the last paragraph? A. To overlook one’s disadvantages. B. To make full use of one’s advantages. C. To have great confidence in one’s abilities. D. To make objective evaluations of one’s abilities. 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Competitive eating is the process of consuming large amounts of food within a required timeframe. Traditionally, the eating competitions were held at fairs to get rid of leftover food. 36 Competitors can take part in competitions all over the country with large cash prizes awarded to the winners. The International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFCO) hold events for competitive eating all around the world. 37 The Japanese competitor managed to eat 54 hot dogs in 12 minutes and has won the contest six years in a row. The main types of food eaten in the competitions are of the fast food variety. Hot dogs, chicken wings, pickles, corndogs and pizza are staples (常用食物) of the competitions. Being large and overweight isn’t necessarily an advantage in competitive eating. 38 Many competitors will drink gallons of water over a period of time in order to achieve this. Apart from having an unusually stretchable (可伸缩的) stomach, the other important factors seem to be hand to mouth speed and coordination (协调). After the competition is over, the competitors have very big stomachs. 39 The IFCO have very strict safety guidelines laid out regarding competitive eating. Competitions must take place in a controlled area and only competitors over the age of 18 are allowed to enter. 40 There has been much talk regarding the inclusion of competitive eating as an Olympic sport. Although the IFCO have approached the Olympic committee, it seems that they will not be approving it at present. A. Now competitive eating has become big business. B. They also advise against any type of home training. C. Their stomachs resemble overblown balloons that are ready to explode. D. The biggest advantage a competitor can have is the ability to actually stretch their stomach. E. Competitions are typically eight to ten minutes long, although some can last up to thirty minutes. F. Takeru Kobayashi is currently ranked number one in the world after eating 57 cow brains in 15 minutes. G. Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest originated in 1916 and the event has been controlled by Takeru Kobayashi. There is a small shop about 200 meters from where I live that sells groceries, meat and other basic necessities.
