When I was a boy there were no smart phones, and our television only got one channel clearly. Still, I was never bored. The fields, hills, and woodlands around my home were the perfect playground. I can remember once hiking to a nearby lake. At the backside of it I was amazed to find an old dirt road that I had never seen before. It was full of muddy tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.
I walked on and on for hours. I was sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ear “turn around and head back home”, but I was stubborn, so I walked on. There was still neither a car nor a house in sight. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared. I didn’t want to end up trapped on this road, and I was worried that it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.
I continued to walk on with something growing inside of me. My heart was pounding and my legs were aching. I was almost in tears when I turned one last curve and saw something in the distance. It was a house that I recognized. I jumped up and down and laughed out loud. It was still over a mile away but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house in no time. I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner.
I remembered this recently when I saw a sign that said: “All roads lead home.” It is true. In
this life, all roads, no matter how they twist and turn, can lead us home again. What is important, though, is how we travel them. Are we going to go forth in fear or are we going to go forth in faith? Are we going to make this life a terrible trip or are we going to make this life a joyful journey? The choice is ours.
24. Why did the author hardly feel bored when he was young?
A. Because he had many friends.
B. Because he could have fun in nature.
C. Because he could watch TV all day.
D. Because he used to explore the old dirt road.
25. How did the author feel when he was exploring the dirt road?
A. He felt contradictory in mind.
B. He thought he would be scolded by his parents.
C. He thought he would be trapped in the woods.
D. He was unconscious.
26. What does “something” probably mean in paragraph 3?
A. Doubt. B. Fear. C. Courage. D. Hope.
27. What does the author mainly intend to tell us?
A. Always make choices on our own.
B. All roads lead home.
C. Every effort is worthwhile.
D. It’s our attitude that matters in our life.
C
Some pigs tend to be optimistic while others are more pessimistic, according to a new research that is meaningful to animal welfare. The study, published in the journal Biology Letters, is the first to show that mood and personality interact in an animal, influencing judgment.
Asher, a researcher at the University of Newcastle’s Institute of Neuroscience, and her team housed groups of pigs in two types of environment. One reflected standard commercial conditions and the other was cushier with more space and plenty of soft, deep straw. After the pigs got accustomed to these new homes over a few weeks, the researchers picked 18 pigs from each type to train and test their judgment.
“To do this, we trained each pig that in one corner of a training room there would be a bowl with chocolate sweets —pigs love them — and at the opposite side of the room there would be a bowl containing coffee beans, which pigs find bitter-tasting,” a researcher said.
Over a number of training trials, pigs learned to go to the bowl reliably when it was in the corner where they had figured out to expect chocolate sweets. On the contrary, they quickly learned
to avoid the bowl when it was in the corner where they would expect to find the coffee beans.
The researchers next placed an unfamiliar bowl in different locations, to see how the pigs would react. Some gaily dashed to the bowl no matter what is in it, showing optimism that it would contain their favorite sweets. Others, however, behaved as though they expected it to contain coffee beans, displaying pessimism.
The findings suggest that a one-size-fits-all answer to animal welfare issues does not exist. Even if pigs are just equal to bacon or other meat for some people, there is still cause for concern. Studies have suggested that how an animal is treated during its lifetime can directly affect meat quality and taste.
28. What was the study trying to figure out?
A. How to make pigs happier.
B. The similarities between humans and pigs.
C. How pigs’ mood and personality affected their judgment.
D. How living environment affected pigs’ mood.
29. What does the underlined word “cushier” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Simple. B. Less free.
C. Unpractical. D. More comfortable.
30. Which bowl can test whether a pig is optimistic or pessimistic?
A. The bowl unfamiliar to two types of pigs.
B. The bowl containing coffee beans.
C. The bowl full of both sweets and beans.
D. The bowl with chocolate sweets.
31. What do the findings of the new research imply?
A. People should treat pigs equally.
B. People should concern pigs’ various needs.
C. People’s health relies on meat quality.
D. People’s attitude toward pigs is totally wrong.
D
Xiaomi’s sales strategy is largely responsible for the decline, having grown indistinguishable from that of many other Chinese manufacturers, according to Hong Kong-based cell-phone market journalist Yasuhiro Yamane. When the company first arrived on the scene in 2011 and 2012, its products were sold online by reservation only, building an air of exclusivity (排外) and making the brand a high image. This strengthened the appeal of the smart phones, which resembled Apple’s iPhones.
But starting in 2013, Xiaomi began concentrating on high-volume sales, allowing many more resellers(代理商) to carry its phones — a critical turning point in the company’s fortunes. While
sales increased, Xiaomi’s products became less premium(高价优质) items and more widely available, mass-market phones, according to Yamane.
To keep consumers from losing interest, Xiaomi introduced a lower-end brand, Redmi, in July 2013. Phones in that family sell for 1000 yuan ($150) or less, around half the price of products from the flagship Mi series.
When China’s economy began to skid(下滑) at the end of 2014, the company leaned harder on the Redmi brand to hold on to market share in the following year — a grave mistake. Though it had some effect, the strategy ultimately “drove the image of Xiaomi as a low-cost phone maker,” Yamane said.
This should serve as a warning to other makers in China, where companies tend to emerge and quickly disappear due to their focus on short-term gains over long-term planning. “There is still a chance that Xiaomi could right itself and regain its old appeal,” Yamane said.
32. What made people consider Xiaomi a high image in 2011?
A. The fact that it is expensive.
B. The fact that it is different from other Chinese manufacturers.
C. The fact that people could only buy its phones from the Internet.
D. The fact that it is like Apple’s iPhones.
33. According to the passage, what was Xiaomi’s plan mainly about in 2013?
A. Making Xiaomi more available. B. Fixing on Xiaomi’s fortune.
C. Setting its turning point. D. Increasing its sales.
34. How did Xiaomi hold on to market share when the economy declined?
A. By depending on lower-end brands. B. By righting itself.
C. By introducing new brands. D. By focusing on long-term planning.
35. Which of the following statement is likely to be Yamane’s opinion?
A. Redmi is popular among all the consumers.
B. The strategy Xiaomi made had no effect at all.
C. The companies in China should concentrate on short-term gains.
D. Allowing many resellers to sell its phones is the turning point of Xiaomi.

六、书面表达
One possible version
Nowadays, with the development of the Internet, grabbing red envelopes on line is becoming more and more popular, attracting thousands of people.
Some people are in favor of it because they think it is fashionable. Grabbing red envelopes gives people a brand new entertainment, which brings people joy and excitement. What’s more, it also promotes people’s friendship.
However, each coin has two sides. Many young people aren’t willing to communicate with others around them, holding a mobile phone all day long just to grab a red envelope with money. It is a waste of time and energy. In addition, staring at the phone for a long time will affect one’s eyesight and sleep.
As far as I am concerned, grabbing red envelopes is not a bad thing as long as we limit the time spent on it.
